The police on Tuesday charged a 37-year-old agent, Omotola Adebanjo, before an Iyaganku Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan for allegedly stealing rent proceeds belonging to his employer.
Adebanjo is standing trial on charges bordering on cheating and stealing.
He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The prosecutor, ASP Femi Omilana, alleged that the defendant committed the offences between March and April at Apata, Ibadan.
He alleged that the defendant, a house agent employed by one Mr Olasupo Apata, was entrusted with collecting and remitting N6.02 million realised from rent to his employer.
The prosecutor alleged that the defendant fraudulently remitted only N3.5 million and retained the balance for his personal use without the knowledge of his employer.
The offences contravene Sections 390(9) and 421 of the Criminal Law of Oyo State, 2000.
The Magistrate, Mrs Adebola Adeola, granted the defendant bail of N2 million with two sureties in like sum.
Among other conditions, the court held that one of the sureties must be a blood relation of the defendant.
The court adjourned the case until Oct. 22 for hearing. (NAN)
