The Fire Officers Wives Association, FOWA, has empowered some women in Masaka, Nasarawa State, with start-up items to help them contribute meaningfully to their families.
The FOWA President, Mrs Olufunke Olumode, who handed out the items in Masaka, described the initiative as part of the FFS’s commitment to public safety by addressing economic and social vulnerabilities that increase people’s risks.
Mrs Olumode, who stated that the women were carefully selected, advised the beneficiaries to ensure that the start-up items are turned into income-generating ventures.
She said the association decided after one of their meetings to reach out to vulnerable women in the community with start-up items.
‘Today, it came to reality. I think what they will gain from this is that if they are able to put in effort, not relenting, I believe they will be able to put food on their tables.
‘When a woman is idle, the whole system is not balanced; it’s sick. So, when you see women that are willing to better their lives, we just need to do the little we can do, and that is what brought about this.
‘Everybody that sows a seed will expect to reap bountifully. So, what I am expecting is that this should become one shop, two shops and a big marketplace’, she said.
Some of the beneficiaries, Elizabeth Chukwuemeka and Amina Mohammed, thanked FOWA for the kind gesture and pledged that the items would increase their household incomes.
Items distributed include bags of rice, beans, maize, wrappers and perishable items.
