Army chief visits Kebbe, rejigs security over Lakurawa threat

The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 8 Division, Nigerian Army, Major General Bemgha Paul Koughna, conducted an operational assessment visit to Kebbe Local Government Area of Sokoto State following renewed security threats allegedly posed by the Lakurawa terrorist group.

The visit, which focused on the Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Kebbe and surrounding communities, came amid a reported renewed attack on the Ungushi community in the area.

Koughna, who undertook the assessment as part of efforts to strengthen security in the area, said the Army had adjusted its security architecture to prevent further terrorist infiltration and protect vulnerable communities along the Sokoto-Kebbi border.

During the visit, the GOC met community leaders and residents to assess the security situation and listen to their concerns.

He assured residents that troops remained fully deployed and alert to respond to emerging threats, urging them not to panic but to continue their lawful activities.

Koughna said the Army was determined to ensure that terrorist elements did not find safe haven in the area, stressing that troops would respond swiftly and decisively to threats against communities.

However, he called for greater cooperation between residents and security forces, particularly through the prompt provision of credible and actionable intelligence on suspicious movements and activities.

According to him, community support remains vital to the early detection, disruption and dismantling of terrorist networks before they launch attacks.

The Army authorities urged residents of Kebbe and neighbouring communities to remain vigilant and maintain close communication with security personnel as operations continue to safeguard lives and property in the affected areas.

The visit was part of ongoing efforts under Sector 2, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, to strengthen security operations across the region.
