Manchester United have completed the signing of Cameroon midfielder Carlos Baleba from Brighton in a deal worth £70 million, adding athleticism, defensive power and energy to Michael Carrick’s midfield.
United will pay an initial £65 million for the 22-year-old, with a further £5 million available in add-ons, while Brighton have also negotiated a sell-on clause. Baleba has signed a five-year contract with an option for a further year.
The transfer takes United’s summer spending to around £153 million and represents a significant investment in strengthening a midfield that has undergone major changes.
Baleba’s arrival follows the summer signings of Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa and Andrey Santos from Chelsea, while Kobbie Mainoo and Bruno Fernandes remain key options in Carrick’s midfield.
United had identified midfield as a priority following the departure of veteran Brazilian Casemiro and the need to build a squad capable of competing in the Champions League.
What Baleba brings to United
Baleba’s biggest asset is his physical presence. The Cameroon international combines strength, mobility and ball-winning ability, giving United a midfielder capable of covering ground and breaking up opposition attacks.
His ability to carry the ball through midfield could also provide United with another route to progress possession from defence into attack.
At Brighton, Baleba developed a reputation as an energetic midfielder who can operate effectively in both defensive and box-to-box roles. His versatility should give Carrick greater tactical flexibility as United attempt to improve their control in midfield.
The timing of his arrival is particularly significant after United’s 2-0 defeat by newly promoted Hull City in their Premier League opener, where Santos and Tielemans made their competitive debuts.
Baleba is currently recovering from an ankle injury suffered during Brighton’s pre-season training camp in Austria and will not be immediately available to Carrick.
Baleba fulfils long-standing United interest
United’s interest in Baleba is not new. The Red Devils attempted to sign him around last year’s transfer deadline but were discouraged by Brighton’s valuation, which was reportedly above £100 million.
United have now returned with a substantially lower fee to secure a player they believe can become an important part of their midfield for years to come.
Baleba joined Brighton from Lille in 2023 for around pound 27 million and made 112 appearances for the Seagulls, scoring four goals.
He featured 31 times in the Premier League last season as Brighton finished eighth and secured qualification for the Conference League.
The Cameroon international said joining United represents a dream move and expressed his excitement about working with Carrick.

A new dimension for Carrick
Baleba gives Carrick another powerful option alongside Fernandes, Mainoo, Tielemans and Santos.
Manuel Ugarte is currently sidelined with a knee injury, while Mason Mount has also missed the final two pre-season matches, making additional midfield depth particularly important.
For United, the £70 million investment is ultimately about more than adding another midfielder. Baleba is expected to provide the defensive protection, physicality and ball-carrying ability needed to make the midfield more balanced.
With United preparing to return to the Champions League for the first time since the 2023/24 season, Baleba’s arrival could prove one of the most important pieces of Carrick’s rebuilding project.
His immediate challenge will be to recover from injury, establish himself at Old Trafford and justify the sizeable fee. If he can translate his Brighton form to Manchester, Baleba could become the midfield engine United have been missing.
