Wema Bank MD Oseni to chair CIBN conference

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Wema Bank, Moruf Oseni, will chair this year’s Consultative Committee for the 19th Annual Banking and Finance Conference of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN). The two-day conference is billed in abuja from September 8 to 9, 2026, at the Congress Hall, Transcorp Hilton Hotel.

The conference has as its theme: ‘Building a Resilient Economy in an Era of Disruptions: Strategic Imperatives for the Banking and Financial Services Industry.’

According to the conference organisers, the gathering will provide a platform for stakeholders to examine contemporary challenges confronting the banking and financial services industry and develop practical solutions capable of strengthening institutions and supporting sustainable economic growth.

Speaking at a briefing, Oseni said this year’s edition has been designed to be one of the biggest and most impactful editions of the conference.

‘This year, we have curated what is set to be the biggest edition of the CIBN Annual Banking and Finance Conference in years-and by biggest, I am not just speaking about size,’ Oseni said.

According to him, the annual conference will also mark a first of its kind dimension- a women-focused programme aimed at highlighting the contribution of women to building a resilient, inclusive and future-ready economy. He described the initiative as a milestone in the institute’s commitment to fostering transformative leadership and promoting a more resilient and prosperous future.

‘For Wema Bank, this strategic focus on women and youth is highly imperative and fully aligned with our strategic goals of empowering lives through innovation and contributing to a society where every person is empowered to thrive and be economically active,’ he said.

The Wema Bank boss urged stakeholders to participate actively in the conference, saying collective efforts were necessary to promote economic empowerment and strengthen the Nigerian economy.

Since assuming leadership of Wema Bank, Oseni has championed initiatives focused on financial inclusion, innovation and economic empowerment, with particular attention to women, youths, small and medium-sized enterprises and other businesses.

His appointment as Chairman of the Consultative Committee is therefore expected to bring his experience in banking, innovation and economic empowerment to the organisation of the conference.

The conference is expected to attract several prominent government officials and leaders in the financial sector.

Among those expected are President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR; Vice President Kashim Shettima, GCON; the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele; and the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Olayemi Cardoso, FCIB.

Also expected is the Chief Host of the conference and President/Chairman of Council of CIBN, Dr. Dele Alabi, alongside other distinguished leaders from government, regulatory institutions, development organisations and the private sector.

The gathering is expected to provide an avenue for stakeholders to exchange ideas, examine emerging disruptions and develop strategies for building a stronger and more resilient Nigerian banking and financial services industry.
