Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul plans to host a get-together for coalition cabinet ministers next week amid speculation of a cabinet reshuffle and questions over the government’s unity.
Mr Anutin said the gathering has yet to be finalised, with no date or venue confirmed.
Asked whether the planned dinner meant there would be no cabinet reshuffle in the near future, the prime minister declined to answer.
The government wants to consolidate its strength and discuss strategies ahead of an expected opposition no-confidence motion.
Pheu Thai leader Julapun Amornvivat said on Friday that he had heard about the planned gatherings but the dates were yet to be confirmed.
Mr Julapun also played down concerns over former party leader Cholnan Srikaew’s planned appearance at an opposition forum on the “crisis of confidence in Thai politics” today.
He said the party does not prohibit members from taking part in public discussions, and the event was not expected to focus on the government.
Mr Julapun expressed confidence in Dr Cholnan’s judgement but said he would discuss the matter with him again following concerns the forum could target the government.
“This activity can be beneficial if it is with good intentions. But if it becomes political, it could amount to using state funds for political purposes,” he said.
Asked whether Dr Cholnan’s participation could create friction within the coalition, Mr Julapun dismissed the suggestion, saying differences of opinion are normal.
He insisted the coalition parties were working together without divisions.
