Philippine National Police chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. has assured the public the artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled body-worn cameras ordered by the PNP will have better image quality.
These cameras ‘will enhance the PNP’s capability to document police operations with clearer and more reliable footage. This will help preserve evidence, support investigations, and promote greater accountability among our personnel,’ he said in a statement on Friday.
Nartatez also said there will be guidelines on the use of body cameras to comply with privacy and the handling of evidence.
‘We assure the public that these body cameras will be used to strengthen transparency and accountability in police operations. We will ensure that our personnel use the technology properly and in accordance with existing laws and policies,’ he said.
Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla had earlier disclosed to the appropriations committee of the House of Representatives that the PNP has ordered up to 20,000 new AI-enabled body cameras.
