PSC, San Juan launch grassroots futsal program

San Juan City has launched a Futsal Development Program in partnership with the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and Philippine Football Federation (PFF).

The program will use the city’s existing indoor basketball courts, making use of facilities already available.

The PSC provided 20 sets of futsal goals and 120 balls for use by San Juan’s 21 barangays.

Around 125 children took part in futsal clinics conducted by Philippine women’s futsal team coach Rafaa Merino Rodriguez.

San Juan mayor Francis Zamora says the program could lead to inter-barangay tournaments.

PSC chairman Patrick Gregorio said the initiative could serve as a model for stronger grassroots sports programs through cooperation between the PSC, local government units and national sports associations.

‘This is what we want. LGUs collaborating with PSC and the NSA. Stronger partnerships mean stronger programs. If the PSC is willing to invest, we want the LGUs to invest as well. Collaboration is stronger when that’s the kind of commitment we have,’ Gregorio said.
