The Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) is preparing 1,520 electric buses to replace ageing vehicles, with deliveries expected to begin in March 2027.
Kittikan Chomdoung Charuworapolkul, BMTA director, visited Absolute Assembly in Chachoengsao on Wednesday to inspect the EV bus production line.
He said the transition would improve passenger convenience, safety and environmental performance while reducing the organisation’s fuel and maintenance costs by an estimated 4.1 billion baht annually.
The buses feature rooftop batteries, three emergency exits and universal-design features. The BMTA is developing 12 depots and charging stations, with each bus requiring about three hours to charge. Two prototype buses will soon undergo testing by BMTA drivers to assess safety before wider deployment, he said.
