The trilateral meeting between Cyprus, Greece and Egypt to be held in El Alamein on Tuesday, September 8, will address all developments in the wider region, including the Mecca agreement, President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides said, noting that the strengthening of trilateral cooperation will also be on the agenda.
Asked whether the Mecca agreement would also be discussed, President Christodoulides said: ‘Certainly, developments in the region – I do not want to speak on behalf of Egypt, some relevant statements have been made – certainly all developments in the region will be discussed.’
Describing the trilateral meeting as ‘important’, the President noted that Cyprus and Egypt maintain ‘excellent relations’.
He said two main issues would be the focus of the meeting. The first concerns developments in the wider region and the second the further strengthening of trilateral cooperation between Cyprus, Greece and Egypt.
At the same time, he said the three countries can, ‘through a positive approach’, contribute to creating conditions of security and cooperation in a region of particular geostrategic importance.
The President also expressed satisfaction that the European Union has now recognised the importance of the region, following efforts by Cyprus and other member states.
In this context, he referred to the decision to hold the second European Union-Gulf Cooperation Council summit in Saudi Arabia in October, saying he would attend the meeting.
