THE Manila Water Non-East Zone operating unit Manila Water Infratech Solutions Inc. (MWIS) announced over the weekend that it has completed a comprehensive non-revenue water (NRW) optimization program for the Philippine Economic Zone Authority-Cavite (PEZA-Cavite), supporting the enhancement of water system efficiency, operational reliability, and resource sustainability across its facilities.
The program leveraged a combination of advanced network diagnostics, hydraulic engineering, and field-based investigations to enhance the performance and efficiency of PEZA’s water distribution system, the company said in a statement.
According to the MWIS, it has conducted a comprehensive technical assessment of water production, transmission, and distribution facilities to establish a detailed understanding of system behavior, flow patterns, pressure conditions, and asset performance.
A key component of the initiative was the establishment of two district metered areas (DMAs), providing greater visibility into water movement across the network and enabling more precise monitoring of consumption and system losses. The DMA framework allowed MWIS to isolate service zones, improve water balance analysis, and identify areas requiring operational intervention, according to the company.
The MWIS said it has also carried out extensive step-testing and acoustic leak detection activities to systematically identify hidden leaks and inefficiencies within the distribution system. These field investigations were complemented by the replacement of critical gate valves that improved network control, zone isolation capability, and operational flexibility during maintenance and repair activities.
Through these targeted NRW-reduction measures, the program successfully recovered approximately 1.7 million liters per day (1.7 MLD) of water, significantly improving system efficiency and reducing water losses within a 4-month program implementation.
To further strengthen system performance, MWIS developed and calibrated a hydraulic model of the network to simulate flow and pressure conditions under various operating scenarios. The model enabled the optimization of water distribution, identification of operational bottlenecks, and evaluation of infrastructure improvement opportunities. Insights generated through the hydraulic simulations guided operational adjustments that improved network efficiency while reducing dependence on energy-intensive facilities.
Through the integration of data-driven analysis, hydraulic modeling, and targeted field interventions, the program enhanced PEZA’s ability to manage its water distribution system proactively, providing a stronger foundation for long-term operational reliability, resource efficiency, and future infrastructure planning.
The PEZA-Cavite, commonly known as Cavite Export Processing Zone (EPZA), is a 275-hectare industrial park located in the municipality of Rosario and the city of General Trias in Cavite which hosts hundreds of export-oriented manufacturing, electronics, logistics, and warehousing companies.
