Nigeria has condemned fresh Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, warning that the renewed hostilities could deepen instability in the Middle East and threaten the flow of critical energy supplies to global markets.
The Federal Government said the attacks, launched on Monday by the Houthi militia in Yemen, represented a serious threat to Saudi Arabia’s security and sovereignty, while raising broader concerns for regional and international stability.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by Oluwafemi Adeniyi, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nigeria said the attacks, which injured scores of civilians and damaged civil infrastructure, risked pushing the region into a wider cycle of escalation.
‘The Federal Government of Nigeria strongly condemns the fresh attacks launched by the Houthi militia in Yemen against the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia,’ the statement said.
The Middle East remains critical to international energy markets, and renewed hostilities in the region could increase risks to energy infrastructure, shipping routes and the uninterrupted movement of oil and other commodities.
Nigeria consequently called on all parties to respect international law and exercise maximum restraint, stressing that further military escalation could have consequences for civilians, regional security and the global economy.
‘Nigeria, therefore, calls on all parties to uphold international law, exercise maximum restraint, and refrain from further actions that could escalate the situation, endanger civilian lives, undermine regional security, and further disrupt the flow of much-needed global energy supplies,’ the ministry said.
The government also expressed solidarity with Saudi Arabia, offering its support to the Saudi government and people following the attacks.
It prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured, while reiterating its opposition to actions capable of worsening the humanitarian and security situation in the region.
The Federal Government said it remained committed to supporting peace processes that promote regional stability and international security, while creating conditions for sustainable economic development and shared prosperity.
‘Nigeria stands in solidarity with the Government and people of Saudi Arabia at this difficult time,’ it said.
The latest attacks add to longstanding tensions involving the Houthi movement, which has previously targeted Saudi Arabia and other regional interests, raising concerns over the potential for conflict in the Middle East to spill into wider security and economic disruptions.
The Foreign Affairs Ministry said Nigeria would continue to support diplomatic and international efforts aimed at promoting peace, security and stability in the region.
