The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a resolution to hold the ‘Road Safety Presidential Awards – 2026’ at the national level, honouring individuals and institutions that have made outstanding contributions to road safety in the country.
The awards ceremony, identified under the Road Safety Action Plan 2025-2026, is intended to recognise the efforts of individuals, public and private institutions, organisations and other stakeholders who have contributed to improving road safety. Beyond recognition, the initiative also aims to boost public awareness, encourage responsible behaviour on the roads, and strengthen public participation in road safety efforts.
Selected recipients will be awarded Merit Awards and Presidential Awards. This year’s ceremony will serve as the inaugural edition of the awards.
Based on the experience and outcomes of this first ceremony, steps will be taken to make it an annual event, to be held in conjunction with the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, observed on 3 November each year.
The proposal to this effect was submitted by Transport, Highways and Urban Development Minister Bimal Rathnayake.
