The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Yobe State has accused the Yobe State Independent Electoral Commission (YSIEC) of failing to adequately notify the party about the guidelines, timetable and other activities for the 2026 Local Government Council Election.
The party said the alleged failure could undermine its participation in the election and called on the commission to explain when, how and through which official channel the relevant electoral information was communicated to it.
The state chairman of the ADC, Umar Kalli Alhaji, made the position known in a letter of concern addressed to the chairman of YSIEC in Damaturu.
The party said access to timely and relevant electoral information was essential for political parties to participate effectively and lawfully in an election.
It said: ‘We therefore request clear evidence of when, how and through what official channel the relevant guidelines, timetable and electoral decisions were communicated to ADC.’
The ADC said its concerns were based on relevant provisions of the 1999 Constitution, applicable electoral laws and YSIEC regulations governing the conduct of local government elections.
The party further warned that it would explore legal and other lawful avenues if it was established that the alleged failure to notify it had prejudiced its rights or participation in the election.
It said such measures could include seeking legal redress, engaging the media and undertaking peaceful public protest in accordance with the law.
The ADC urged YSIEC to provide an urgent explanation and take corrective measures where necessary to ensure that all political parties were given equal opportunity to participate in the electoral process.
The party said it raised the concern in the interest of fairness, transparency and credible local government elections in Yobe State.
