Thailand’s No.1 tennis player Lanlana Tararudee has withdrawn from the Asian Games team as she aims to focus on improving her world ranking to boost her chance of qualifying for the 2028 Olympic Games.
In a letter submitted to the Lawn Tennis Association of Thailand (LTAT) office on Wednesday, Lanlana said, “After carefully consulting with my team and personal manager, it is necessary to revise my development strategy with the aim of reaching the top 50 in the world rankings. This move is intended to increase my opportunities to compete in major tournaments next year, which are vital for Olympic qualification.”
She also apologised to the LTAT, the committee, coaches, and all relevant parties for any impact the decision might have on team preparations. Lanlana also expressed her gratitude to the association for its continued trust and affirmed her intention to return to represent Thailand in the future.
The tennis competition at the 20th Asian Games will feature five gold medal events including men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles.
The LTAT is hopeful that Thai players will bring home medals, particularly in the doubles events.
