Mobile phone users across Cyprus received a notification from CY-Alert, the national public warning system, at 6:52 p.m. Thursday, informing them of a yellow weather warning issued earlier by the Department of Meteorology. The warning will be in effect from 9 p.m. Thursday until 5 p.m. Friday (local time).
According to the Department of Meteorology, a weather system located west of Cyprus and accompanied by an organized band of rain and thunderstorms is expected to gradually affect the island from tonight.
Occasionally, isolated severe thunderstorms are expected, initially over the western half of the island and gradually in other areas as well.
Rainfall intensity may range between 35 and 55 millimeters per hour, while hail and strong wind gusts of up to 8 Beaufort may occur locally.
