Gombe State University (GSU) has offered to employ 19-year-old Maryam Ibrahim Dan’Azumi, the Gombe-born winner of an international Qur’anic recitation competition, after she graduates from the institution.
The university’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Sani Ahmed Yauta, announced the offer when he received Maryam at his office to celebrate her achievement and encourage her to pursue academic excellence.
Maryam, who is a student of the Department of Science Education, is currently studying for a Bachelor’s degree in Physics Education at the university.
Prof. Yauta congratulated her on her achievement, describing it as a source of pride to the university and the state.
He assured her of the institution’s continued support throughout her studies, while urging her to remain focused on her academic pursuits.
As part of the recognition of her achievement and potential, the Vice Chancellor offered Maryam employment at GSU upon successful completion of her first degree.
He said the opportunity would enable her to contribute to the university community while serving as an inspiration to other young people seeking to combine academic pursuits with excellence in other fields.
Maryam, a student of Abubakar Siddiq Community Islamic School for Qur’anic Memorisation, Gombe, emerged as the winner recently in the women’s category at the 46th King Abdulaziz International Qur’anic Competition in Makkah, Saudi Arabia.
She represented Nigeria in the category for memorisation of the entire Holy Qur’an, recitation, Tajweed and interpretation (60 Hizb with Tafsir).
Her victory was particularly historic as it came in the maiden year female contestants were admitted into the 46-year-old competition, making Maryam’s win a landmark achievement.
