The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has disowned a purported letter circulating on social media in his name and allegedly addressed to the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Ugochukwu Achebe.
Obi, in a statement posted on his social media platforms, described the document as fake and said it was designed to mislead members of the public.
According to him, the purported letter, which touched on political and financial matters in Anambra State, did not emanate from him.
‘My attention has been drawn to a fake letter circulating on social media, purportedly written by me to His Majesty, Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Ugochukwu Achebe, the Obi of Onitsha, concerning political and financial matters in Anambra State,’ Obi said.
He described the document as ‘entirely false, malicious, and a fabrication by mischievous elements aimed at misleading the public.’
Obi also rejected the signature appended to the letter, saying it had been forged.
‘Furthermore, the signature appended to the letter is completely forged,’ he said. The former Anambra State governor urged members of the public and the media to disregard the document and refrain from treating it as an authentic communication from him.
He said his attention remained focused on issues of national development and accountability.
‘I urge the public and media to disregard this spurious publication. My focus remains steadfastly on issues of national development, accountability, and building a better future for our people – never on cheap fabrications,’ Obi said.
The disclaimer comes amid heightened political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections, with political actors and support groups increasingly using social media to circulate statements and other materials attributed to public figures.
