Don Asks FG To Invest In Reliable Database

A Professor of Information Management, Prof. Mustapha Momoh, has called on the federal government and organisation leaders to invest robustly in the creation of reliable database for the country.

He also stressed that developments in digital technologies should be incorporated into education, adding that organisation’s managers should engage in continuous updates of their information.

The university don stated this at the headquarters of National Open Union of Nigeria (NOUN) when delivering 43rd inaugural lecture of the university titled: ‘Managing Information Sources, Utilisation and the Need to know’.

Weekend Trust reports Nigeria has made different efforts including mandatory National Identity Number (NIN) to capture all Nigerians on its database but such efforts have yielded little or no success. Prof. Momoh said it is imperative to understand that having a well-established information system does not automatically guarantee effective information management.

He said, ‘Organisations may have sophisticated software and still make poor decisions if management lacks goodwill and employees lack the requisite skills, motivation or a good organizations culture for effective information utilisation.

‘Government or organisation leaders should endeavour to invest in reliable networks, databases, digital repositories and information systems to facilitate sound platforms for information utilisation and good information governance in the country.’

He lamented that it is discouraging to have data captured, prepared and processed by whatever means, incur costs and in the end, the information does not produce value.
