Far Eastern University eased to its first win in the UAAP Season 89 men’s basketball tournament after downing the University of the East, 93-70, at Mall of Asia Arena on Saturday.
The Tamaraws barely broke a sweat to improve to a 1-1 record while leaving the Red Warriors still searching for a win after three games.
‘The way we had our collapse against Adamson was not what we expected. We had to sit on that for weeks. It was hard for us,’ coach Sean Chambers said, referring to their season-opening loss to the Soaring Falcons.
‘I still went back to one of the messages of the last game, which is, our focus now is about going with the process and making the right plays.’
FEU ended the opening quarter with a 23-15 lead and continued to pull away in the second.
The Tamaraws opened the frame with a 15-5 run, capped by a jumper from Marc Burgos at the 3:47 mark that stretched their lead to 38-20.
UE tried to catch up but was unable to inch closer as it fell to 0-3.
Mo Konateh paced FEU on offense with 15 points while Kirby Mongcopa had a double-double of 13 points and 13 rebounds. Jorrick Bautista had 13 while Janrey Pasaol and Jedric Daa had 12 points apiece in the win.
Toper Lagat topscored for UE in a losing effort with 20 points, while Mo Tanedo and Gene Carillo added 16 and 13, respectively.
