The All Progressives Congress (APC) has won all 17 chairmanship seats in the local government elections conducted across Yobe State on September 26, according to the Yobe State Independent Electoral Commission (YOSIEC).
YOSIEC Chairman Ibrahim Mohammed Yabani, who formally declared the winners, said the elections took place across all 178 electoral wards in the state’s 17 local government areas. He stated that votes were counted and collated in accordance with the relevant electoral guidelines and applicable laws.
Among the results announced, APC candidate Musa Kalan Degona secured 54,312 votes in Bade Local Government Area, while Usman Bukar of the APC won the Bursari chairmanship election with 24,331 votes.
Security Considerations and Voter Turnout
Yabani said the commission had not received any official report of ballot-box snatching in Gulani Local Government Area. He added that officials conducted the election in the area, collated the results, and submitted the necessary returns. Security concerns might have prompted electoral officials to move election materials to a collation centre, he noted, pointing out that Gulani is among the areas affected by the Boko Haram insurgency.
Rejecting claims that voter sensitisation was inadequate, Yabani said the commission’s campaign covered all 178 wards. He stated that voter turnout exceeded expectations, citing Potiskum, where the winning candidate secured 58,500 votes, as evidence of significant voter participation.
The YOSIEC chairman also said the commission excluded no political party from the election, adding that all parties received equal opportunities to participate. However, he noted that the commission could not compel any political party that chose not to contest to do so.
Opposition Parties Secure Council Wards
Yabani directed members of the public to the commission’s website for details of the participating political parties, noting that their names were also listed on the ballot papers used during the poll. He further said Yobe State has 178 councillors, with one representing each electoral ward.
