Victoria Bossong’s first competition representing the Philippines ended with an Asian Games medal and a desire to wear the country’s colors on many more major stages.
The 23-year-old Filipino-American took bronze in the women’s 800 meters at the 2026 Asian Games, clocking 2 minutes, 5.34 seconds at Nagoya City Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium.
China’s Wu Hongjiao won gold in 2:04.49, while Bahrain’s Nelly Korir claimed silver in 2:05.16.
Bossong, who became eligible to represent the Philippines in national representative competitions in July 2026, said competing under the Philippine flag added another dimension to her Asian Games debut.
‘This is my first time running for the Philippines,’ Bossong said. ‘And especially on such a big stage, I think I handled the pressure well. And I think I learned a lot.’
Bossong entered the Asian Games with a personal best of 1:58.52 and ran 2:02.34 in the heats, the fastest qualifying time for the final. She wanted gold but said reaching the podium for the Philippines remained meaningful.
‘I wish I could be here with a gold medal, but I gave it my best today,’ Bossong said. ‘And I’m just happy I was able to bring home a medal for the Philippines. I hope next time it’s a gold though.’
Bossong said the messages she received from supporters, particularly girls who told her she had inspired them, reinforced why representing the Philippines mattered to her.
‘Most importantly, like, I’m just really happy like today, even before I ran, like, I just received so much support,’ she said. ‘And like so many girls saying like, you know, like you’re such an inspiration to me. And that just means so much. And I know that, like, that’s why I’m here doing it.’
After more than a year of training, Bossong plans to take a month-long break before beginning preparations for another season.
She hopes the Asian Games will be only the start of her appearances for the Philippines.
‘But after I’m excited to, you know, have a lot of competitions for the Philippines now,’ Bossong said.
She mentioned the Asian Championships, World Championships and Southeast Asian Games among the competitions she hopes to pursue.
