Nigeria Targets Africa’s Biggest Livestock Powerhouse – Minister

Minister of Livestock Development, Alhaji Idi Mukhtar Maiha, says Nigeria is targeting to become the biggest livestock powerhouse in Africa.

This is just as he commended Origin Tech Group and the Lagos State Government for their investments in modern livestock development, describing their partnership as a model for Nigeria’s livestock transformation.

Maiha made the commendation during a working visit to Origin Tech Group Nigeria, where he inspected initiatives being implemented in collaboration with the Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems.

The Minister praised the deployment of technology and private-sector investment across the livestock value chain, including cattle fattening and transit facilities at Igbodu and Badagry, as well as animal feed production.

According to him, the initiatives demonstrate that organised livestock production can thrive in Nigeria and contribute significantly to food security, job creation and economic growth.

‘Origin Tech Group has demonstrated that Nigerians can invest in organised livestock production, management, marketing and distribution,’ Maiha said.

He noted that the company’s operations had also challenged the perception that Lagos lacked sufficient land and capacity for ranching, feedlotting and commercial livestock production.

The Minister said greater collaboration between government and private-sector operators would be critical to achieving the Federal Government’s livestock development objectives.

‘Our vision is for Nigeria to become the biggest livestock powerhouse on the continent,’ he said.

Origin Tech Group’s Executive Chairman, Prince Samuel Joseph Samuel, received the Minister alongside senior officials of the company and the Lagos State Government.

Also present were Lagos State Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems, Ms. Abisola Olusanya; Special Adviser to the Governor on Agriculture and Food Systems, Dr. Oluwarotimi Fashola; Permanent Secretary, Mr. Emmanuel Audu; and Executive Director, Corporate Services, Origin Tech Group, Mr. Olusesan Ayeni, among other stakeholders.
