Credible migration data necessary for national security, border management, says NIS boss

The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Mrs Kemi Nanna Nandap, emphasised the need for credible migration data and sustained inter-agency collaboration for national security and sound border management.

She also advocated an effective implementation mechanism for the strategic border management policy to secure Nigerian border posts.

Nandap spoke at the recently concluded three-day Top Management Workshop organised by the NIS in collaboration with the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and with support from the European Union.

The workshop, held at the Zuma Rock Resort, Niger State, focused on reviewing the 2019-2023 National Border Management Strategy (NBMS) and its Action Plan in preparation for the next policy cycle, 2027-2031.

The Public Relations Officer of the NIS, Deputy Comptroller of Immigration, Akinsola Akinlabi, said the workshop provided a strategic platform for NIS Top Management and partners to review progress, exchange perspectives and consider key priorities to strengthen Nigeria’s Border Management framework and to provide a basis for aligning the review with the priorities of the next policy cycle.

Akinlabi quoted the Comptroller-General as saying the review must provide a clear, actionable framework capable of responding to emerging border management and security challenges, while positioning Nigeria to provide leadership in integrated Border Management across Africa.

‘The engagement featured strategic discussions, technical sessions and group presentations, and the consolidation of the review outcomes, followed by an NIS Executive Management Endorsement Session to review and endorse key recommendations,’ Akinlabi said in a statement.

He added that the workshop provided an avenue for top management to prioritise interventions, consider financing options and validate the proposed strategic direction for the 2027-2031 policy cycle.

‘The workshop reinforces the commitment of the Nigeria Immigration Service and its partners to sustained collaboration and continuous improvement in Border Management,’ Akinlabi said.
