Costa – von der Leyen reaffirm solidarity with Greece and Cyprus over ratification of Turkish-Libyan “memorandum”

European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen reaffirmed the EU’s solidarity with Greece and Cyprus in a joint statement, following the ratification of the Turkish-Libyan “memorandum” by the Libyan Parliament.

The two heads of the EU institutions expressed “deep regret” over today’s ratification by the Libyan Parliament of the so-called Libya-Trkiye Memorandum of Understanding on the delimitation of maritime jurisdictions in the Mediterranean Sea.

They also recalled that the EU’s position on the matter was clearly stated by the European Council in 2019 and “remains unchanged”.

Costa and von der Leyen were particularly clear in their assessment of the agreement: “This agreement infringes upon the sovereign rights of third states, it does not comply with the Law of the Sea, and is null and void.”

Concluding, the two presidents reiterated: “We reaffirm our solidarity with Greece and Cyprus.”

The statement stresses, finally, that the EU reiterates its well-known position against any outside interference in Libya.
