The Cabinet of Ministers has approved awarding the contract to construct two wastewater treatment plants for the Welipenna service area on the Southern Expressway to the National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB), at an estimated cost of Rs. 562.04 million.
The service area is maintained by Canowin Hotels and Spas Ltd., a fully owned subsidiary of the Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation. It has been identified that the capacity of the existing wastewater treatment plants at the facility is insufficient.
The NWSDB examined the prevailing conditions at the site and submitted a report recommending the construction of two new treatment plants, each with a capacity of 200 cubic metres per day.
The proposal to this effect was submitted by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake in his capacity as the Finance, Planning and Economic Development Minister.
