The National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) warned the public against individuals posing as priests to solicit money for religious services during All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day (Undas).
The NCRPO issued the advisory as thousands of families are expected to visit cemeteries, memorial parks and columbaria across Metro Manila for the observance.
‘Undas is a sacred and meaningful occasion for our families to remember and honor our departed loved ones,’ said NCRPO Officer-in-Charge Brig. Gen. Christopher Abrahano in a statement on Tuesday.
‘We appeal to everyone not to allow their emotions to be exploited by individuals who may use religious representation as a means to obtain money,’ Abrahano pointed out.
He urged the public to verify the identity of anyone claiming to be a priest through cemetery administrators or the parish or diocese concerned.
The public was also advised to be vigilant of individuals who insist on immediate payments, a fixed amount, or persons who become aggressive when questioned.
‘When in doubt, do not hand over money or personal information,’ Abrahano said.
Legitimate religious services are generally coordinated through established parishes, dioceses, churches or cemetery administrators, the NCRPO said.
The Philippine National Police (PNP) earlier announced that it is set to go on full alert on Oct. 30 for the observance of Undas.
The NCRPO urged cemetery visitors to report suspicious individuals to the nearest police personnel, Police Assistance Desks, or cemetery security personnel.
Cemetery visitors were also advised to take note of identifying individuals that may assist authorities in verifying reports and conducting investigations.
The advisory aims to prevent possible deception during the solemn religious observance of Undas.
In a separate statement on Tuesday, the PNP said it is stepping up road safety operations ahead of Undas to prevent road accidents.
‘I have directed our police commanders to strengthen coordination with local government units and traffic authorities, increase police visibility along major travel routes and accident-prone areas, and ensure prompt assistance to motorists,’ said PNP Chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr.
