Spain train collision kills at least 30, amid suspected signalling failure

Spanish authorities are investigating a possible signalling failure after a collision between two high-speed trains in Toledo province on Wednesday, which killed at least 30 people and left more than 80 others injured.

The crash occurred near Urda, about 150 kilometres south of Madrid, between a Renfe AVE train travelling from Madrid to Seville and an Iryo train heading in the opposite direction.

Initial reports in the Spanish media suggested a railway control error may have contributed to the collision. However, investigators have not yet established the exact cause of the crash.

The impact caused several carriages to derail, injuring dozens of passengers and prompting an emergency response involving rescue workers and medical teams.

Railway operator Adif suspended high-speed services between Madrid and Andalusia following the accident, disrupting journeys along the route.

Investigators are still determining the circumstances surrounding the collision.
