INEC reacts to alleged suspicious photos in voter register

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said it is reviewing suspicious photographs, including those suspected to be AI-generated, found in the Preliminary Register of Voters published recently on its website.

INEC said this in a statement signed by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, its Chairman of Information and Voter Education Committee (IVEC), on Tuesday.

But INEC said the online register, released on October 26, 2026, was the same preliminary register physically displayed at Registration Areas nationwide from October 9 to 15 as part of the Display, Claims and Objections exercise.

INEC said in the statement that some questionable registration records had been identified and flagged for further examination during the physical display, prompting a review and corrective process in line with established procedures.

But the Commission also said the online publication contained the original preliminary register and did not incorporate all ongoing data-cleanup activities.

According to it, the preliminary register was not the final certified Register of Voters as the display exercise was designed to enable citizens and stakeholders to scrutinise the records, identify inaccuracies and irregularities, and facilitate necessary corrections before certification.

The Commission said it will investigate the circumstances surrounding the suspicious photographs, including possible technical or procedural lapses that may have contributed to their appearance in the register.

The commission said it will take appropriate action based on verified findings, while further updates would be provided as the review progresses.

It also commended citizens and stakeholders who raised concerns over the photographs, noting that public scrutiny was essential to improving the accuracy and integrity of the voters’ register.

INEC also reiterated its commitment to completing the necessary verification, adjudication and data-cleanup processes ahead of the scheduled certification of the final Register of Voters on December 15, 2026.
