What to look out for Blantyre Derby in TNM Super League: Bullets vs Wanderers

By Raymond Siyaya Jnr

The Blantyre derby is on the door step and the result has huge ramifications for the league title as FCB Nyasa Big Bullets who are perched high on the Sapitwa summit of the Super league with 49 points, go head to head with Mighty Wanderers who are second with 45 points at the iconic Kamuzu stadium in Blantyre.

It is finer margins that dictate results when the two giants clash. In seven matches that the two have met since 2022,they have drawn four times while Bullets have won twice.

A Bullets victory will open a seven point gap and Bullets will look like running away with it, while a Nomads win cuts the four points gap to one, albeit Wanderers have a game in hand and are yet to lose.

But where could the match be won and lost for both bullets and nomads?

NYASULU VS KHUNGWA.
The goalkeeper is the last line in defence and is entrusted to prevent the opposition from scoring in the net using reflexes and agility to block and deflect balls away from the goal. Both Dalitso Khungwa and Innocent Nyasulu for Wanderers and Bullets, respectively, have done expertly well in doing this job.

Dalitso Khungwa has racked up nine clean sheets in 11 matches and conceded only two goals with the other goal scored from the penalty spot. Similarly, Innocent Nyasulu has kept 10 clean sheets from 16 games, and both are high up in the clean sheet statistics chart. It would be noteworthy that Bullets have conceded 10 goals while Wanderers have shipped in eight goals so far.

WANDERERS DEFENCE FRAILTIES.
Defencive organisation and stability have been a huge grey area for Wanderers such that it has the potential to unravel the Wanderers campaign this season. Peter Cholopi’s inconsistencies, poor judgement and decision making, poor positioning, and raw aggression have cost Wanderers goals, and he has also been red carded. Pairing him with Emmanuel Nyirenda does also not help matters sometimes, as Nyirenda looks heavy and has no pace to match Strikers with speed when opposition teams break.

Lawrence Chaziya, who has lost a place in the starting lineup, does not give solace as he too has similar defencive issues. If these defencive issues rear their ugly heads again during the derby ,Wanderers will not go away with them as Bullets are ruthless when handed such opportunities.

However, this does not mean Bullets have no defensive problems of their own. One big problem with coach Peter Mponda is the chopping and changing of the defence personnel. Mponda has also been deploying utility player Yankho Singo as either centre back or fullback. The only defender he has maintained so far is Blessings Mpokera, who has won multiple man of the match awards.

Defenders need to build relationships and partnerships for synergy and chemistry. But when you continue to chop and change in each and every game, you risk damaging that valuable partnership, and this can create problems.

In addition,Bullets defence is still untested since they continue to command ball possession which allows them to control the tempo and momentum of the game hence it is always the opposition defence that is mostly on the receiving end.

THE MIDFIELD BATTLE.
They say the midfield is the “heartbeat” of the team. It will be interesting to watch how the midfield combination of Felix Zulu, Blessings Singini, and Isaac Kaliati will contend and challenge with Frank Willard,Paul Master and Yankho Singo

In a reverse fixture which Wanderers won one nil, Wanderers tamed Yankho Singo and Lloyd Banega Aaron and muted Chikumbutso Salima They also had lots of possessions, which allowed them to dictate the pace and momentum of the game.

However, this time around, Bullets have roped in Paul Master who is a master at ball recovery, offensive and defencive transitions, and sometimes he masterly connects and links high up with Strikers to score goals.

Peter Mponda has also controversially deployed Bright Bweke Munthali as a central midfielder amidst many Bullets fans protesting his inclusion by arguing that he is past his prime and does not have the legs to run and patrol the central midfield.

However, Bweke in the Kamuzu Barracks and Mafco games he has been featured so far, was pivotal as he was just street wise with his positioning and was linking up with Ephraim Kondowe and Hassan Kajoke very well. Perhaps the stakes are too high for Mponda to risk Bweke in a game of this magnitude. Whosoever wins the midfield battle has a higher chance of winning the game.

WING-PLAY CUTTING EDGE.
Both teams rely heavily on wing play in and during offensive transitions. For Wanderers, it is WiseDihno Mpinganjira, and Bullets have Chikumbutso Salima to carve open defensive lines with trickery and pace.

However, Mpinganjira is more hybrid as he can also drop in defence and help provide cover. Salima has so far assisted nine goals while Mpinganjira has seven assists. Salima has scored 9 goals and is the second top goal scorer to Babatunde Adepoju.

But Wanderers have another weapon that has risen through the ranks in the name of Adam Wallace, who is second to Mpinganjira in the perking order. Wallace is a traditional winger who can take on defenders beating them from the outside or inside to send crosses for Muhamad Sulumba or Sama Tanjong. Will Bob mpinganjira play them both? Wisedihno Mpinganjira operates on both flanks, and the only way both Wallace and Mpinganjira can play is if Mpinganjira plays as an inverted winger to be cutting inside and using his powerful foot for shots.

It will also be interesting how Mponda uses Hassan Kajoke, who is coming out from the doldrums and coming into his own. In the Bullets vs. Mafco game,Kajoke played as a right non- traditional winger. Kajoke does not hug the line as traditional wingers do, but used body feints and trickery to link up effectively with Ephraim Kondowe who was dropping deep and could release Kajoke into spaces where Kajoke managed to score two goals.

To the left flank, Bullets have Peter Banda or can also deploy Yamikani Mologeni, who are both mavericks to carry the ball through hugging the line and sending pinpointing crosses.

BULLETS’ SCORERS GALORE
It is worth noting that it is only FCB Nyasa Big Bullets and Karonga United who have multiple goal scorers in their teams. Both have 12 different scorers. This might be handy for Bullets as they have scorers from every position or angle on the pitch.

In fact, Babatunde is the top goal scorer with 12 goals and is seconded by Salima with nine. Ephraim Kondowe, Kajoke, Sean Mcbrams, and Paul Master can all score goals. No wonder bullets have scored 46 goals while Wanderers have 28 goals a far cry to Bullets goal tally.

Both teams have Strikers who drop deep to link up with the midfield in order to disrupt defencive shape of the opposition as the centre backs follow them which create spaces for their wingers, since the full backs tend to cover the space left by the centre backs.

The Blue Eagles vs. Wanderers game saw Muhamad Sulumba dropping deep, and his space was being filled by Bleelssings Mwalilino, who scored two goals coming from the left flank. Similarly, Ephraim Kondowe was dropping deep to link up with the midfield but was also setting up Kajoke who was occupying the space left by the full back who had gone to cover the space that had been left by his centre back who had followed Kondowe.

The Blantyre derby is won or lost on the pitch. It cares less about position and form a team has.

Events on that particular day and during the game dictate the winner.

Malawi rolls out national cervical cancer vaccination campaign

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-In a renewed effort to eliminate cervical cancer, Ministry of Health has launched a nationwide Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination campaign, running from October 27 to 31..

The campaign is targeting girls 9 to 18 across the country targeting 2,507,584.

The campaign will be conducted in both public and private schools as well as all health facilities in both
rural ,urban areas and communities.

It aims to ensure that every girl who has been eligible for the HPV vaccine since its introduction in 2019 can now receive it.

Speaking during a media training session Mponera in Dowa, Dr. Dafrossa Lyimo, a consultant from the World Health Organization (WHO), highlighted the importance of the initiative in reducing cervical cancer cases in Malawi.

“Malawi records an estimated 2,300 new cervical cancer cases and 1,600 deaths each year. If no action is taken, projections show these numbers could rise to 22,543 new cases and 15,705 deaths by 2030,” Dr. Lyimo said.

She noted that despite the HPV vaccine being introduced in 2019, coverage remains low, leaving many adolescent girls unprotected.

Dr. Lyimo added that the ongoing campaign will be school-based, covering both public and private institutions, to reach as many eligible girls as possible.

Ministry of Health spokesperson Adrian Chikumbe urged all eligible girls to get vaccined during the campaign emphazing the life long benefits of the vaccine.

“We are calling on parents and guardians to bring their children for vaccination. This campaign will help protect them for a lifetime,” Chikumbe said.

He also applauded Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, for its generous support, which has made it possible to reach many districts across the country.

“We are grateful to Gavi for the donation that enables us to reach more communities nationwide,” Chikumbe added.

The ministry of health is championing the campaign in collaboration with various partners including World Health Organization (WHO)UNICEF, Amref Health Africa, with support funding from Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance.

The Ministry expressed hope that this renewed nationwide effort will boost vaccination coverage and move Malawi closer to its goal of eliminating cervical cancer as a public health threat.

Dylan Efron Reveals He Suffered a Broken Nose Amid ‘DWTS’ Training

Dylan Efron has assured Dancing With the Stars fans that he is on the mend after suffering an injury.

The former Traitors star, 33, light-heartedly announced on Saturday, October 25, that he broke his nose — though he promised the facial snafu will not hold him back from performing on DWTS’s next live show.

“Broke my nose, but dont [sic] need it to dance,” Efron announced via Instagram. “I’m seriously all good.”

Efron went on to thank his Dancing With the Stars professional partner Daniella Karagach, her fellow pro Pasha Pashkov and celebrity contestant Danielle Fishel for supporting him through the injury.

“I’ll never forget the way Dani, Pasha and Danielle WOULDN’T leave me side when it happened, warms my heart to have friends like them,” he beamed.

What Former ‘DWTS’ Contestants Have Said About Injuries Sustained on the Show

In one Instagram slide, Efron confirmed that the injury occurred in Dancing With the Stars rehearsals.

“We were trying a new move and I took an elbow right here,” he said as he pointed to his broken nose. “And, it made a really loud crack. So, not how I wanted to end the rehearsal day, but we’ll be back dancing tomorrow.”

Several others within the Dancing With the Stars community showed their support for Efron in the comment section.

“Oh em gee,” DWTS professional Val Chmerkovskiy replied, with celebrity contestant Robert Irwin offering his best wishes by writing: “What!!!!! Feel better mate.”

Pro Mark Ballas added, “I hope you’re ok brother. sending you love.”

“WHAT?!! @dylanefron hope you’re ok,” pro Emma Slater chimed in.

Efron’s Traitors costar “Boston” Rob Mariano made light of his friend’s injury with some tongue-in-cheek instructions for Karagach.

“Keep him in line @daniellakaragach,” the Survivor alum, 49, teased.

The injury comes on the heels of another triumphant week for Efron and Karagach, as they survived elimination during Wicked Week on Tuesday, October 21, with their rumba set to “I’m Not That Girl” from the musical blockbuster scoring a solid 32 out of 40 points.

Efron and Karagach’s next challenge will be a spooky rendition of the Viennese waltz set to Tommee Profitt and Brooke’s cover of the Elvis Presley classic “Can’t Help Falling in Love” for Halloween Week on Tuesday, October 28. Other exciting routines lined up for the holiday episode include Alix Earle and Chmerkovskiy dancing a tango to Billie Eilish’s “Bury a Friend” as well as Jen Affleck and Jan Ravnik setting their contemporary dance to Taylor Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do.”

Meanwhile, Dancing With the Stars viewers recently met Dylan’s 5-year-old sister Olivia Efron as part of his Dedication Week routine, though his brother Zac Efron has yet to make an appearance in the ballroom.

Dylan told Extra that Zac is simply “doing his thing” and while he may not have appeared on DWTS yet, his older brother is still “supporting me every day.”

Traitors’ Dylan Efron Left His Comfort Zone Behind — And Ended Up on ‘DWTS’

As part of his Dedication Week performance, Dylan chose the song “Rewrite the Stars” from The Greatest Showman, which Zac performed with Zendaya in the 2017 movie. Dylan later told Us Weekly exclusively that the song choice “just made sense.”

“It wasn’t even a thought,” he confirmed. “That’s like my favorite performance by Zac, so it was special.”

Dylan also recently confirmed that Zac has offered encouragement throughout his DWTS journey, including the High School Musical actor even sharing his memories of attending tapings of the ABC show in the past.

“He’s like, ‘The best part is going to be those live shows,’” Dylan told Us. “He was saying, like, it’s such a good feeling.”

Cameroon awaits presidential election results amid rising tensions

..As the Constitutional Council prepares to announce the vote count, President Paul Biya and rival Tchiroma Bakary face a critical moment of political uncertainty and potential reconciliation.

By Burnett Munthali

Tensions are escalating in Cameroon as the country awaits the official announcement of presidential election results.

The Constitutional Council is legally required to release the results by Sunday, setting the stage for a pivotal political moment.

President Paul Biya and his administration are closely monitoring the situation, while opposition leader Tchiroma Bakary and his supporters have expressed concern over transparency and fairness.

According to information obtained by Jeune Afrique, Biya has made a gesture of extending a hand to his opponent, signaling a potential move toward dialogue or reconciliation.

This development comes amid a climate of heightened political uncertainty, as both camps prepare for possible disputes or challenges to the results.

Observers note that Cameroonians are closely watching the interactions between the two political camps, hoping for a peaceful resolution that upholds democratic principles.

The presidential election has been marked by intense campaigning, with debates focusing on governance, economic policy, and national security, as citizens weigh their options.

Political analysts suggest that Biya’s gesture toward Bakary could be an attempt to reduce tensions, prevent unrest, and maintain stability in the country.

Opposition groups, however, remain cautious, stating that any engagement must be accompanied by transparency and adherence to legal and constitutional norms.

International observers have also emphasized the importance of credible electoral processes and peaceful transitions, highlighting Cameroon’s responsibility to safeguard democratic institutions.

The coming days will be decisive, as the official results are announced and both political camps respond to the outcome.

Citizens, civil society groups, and regional partners are watching closely, aware that the manner in which these results are handled could define Cameroon’s political trajectory for years to come.

Amid the uncertainty, the nation faces a test of its democratic resilience, with the potential for either reconciliation or heightened conflict depending on the actions of its leaders.

Ivory Coast votes amid tension as President Alassane Ouattara seeks controversial fourth term

As polling stations open across the nation, Ivorians cast their votes in a high-stakes election overshadowed by political exclusion, opposition boycotts, and mounting public discontent over President Ouattara’s bid for another term.

Polls opened in Ivory Coast on Saturday in an election that could shape the country’s political trajectory for years to come.

Voters across the West African nation turned out to cast their ballots amid tight security and rising tensions, as President Alassane Ouattara seeks a fourth term in office.

Ouattara, who has been in power since 2011, faces mounting criticism for what opponents and observers have described as a democratic backslide.

The election comes after several key opposition figures were barred from contesting, sparking concerns that the vote lacks credibility and fairness.

Among those disqualified are former Prime Minister Guillaume Soro and ex-President Laurent Gbagbo, both of whom have significant political followings and were seen as strong challengers to Ouattara’s rule.

Their exclusion from the race has intensified calls for electoral reform and greater inclusivity in Ivory Coast’s political system.

In Abidjan, the country’s economic capital, police and soldiers were deployed to maintain order as early voters lined up under heavy security presence.

Election observers from the African Union and ECOWAS are closely monitoring the process, though their missions have already noted concerns about transparency and political tension leading up to the polls.

Critics argue that Ouattara’s decision to seek another term undermines constitutional limits on presidential tenure and threatens to undo years of progress made after the 2010–2011 post-election crisis.

That conflict, triggered by a disputed election between Ouattara and Gbagbo, claimed over 3,000 lives and displaced hundreds of thousands of Ivorians.

While the country has since enjoyed relative peace and economic growth, many fear that the current election could reopen old wounds and polarize communities once again.

Supporters of Ouattara, however, defend his candidacy, saying the nation needs continuity and stability at a time of global economic uncertainty and regional insecurity.

They credit his administration with major infrastructure projects, improvements in education, and attracting foreign investment, arguing that another term would allow him to consolidate these gains.

Ouattara himself has justified his bid for re-election by citing a constitutional change in 2016, which he claims “reset” presidential term limits and allows him to seek a new mandate.

This interpretation has been fiercely rejected by opposition leaders, civil society groups, and constitutional law experts, who say it amounts to manipulating the law for personal political survival.

Across the country, opposition groups have called for calm but have urged citizens to resist what they call “a stolen election.”

Some regions, particularly in the western and northern parts of Ivory Coast, reported sporadic violence and intimidation of voters, though authorities have sought to downplay the incidents.

The Independent Electoral Commission (CEI) has assured citizens that the voting process will be free and fair, promising swift handling of any irregularities.

However, skepticism remains high among international observers, with some questioning the commission’s independence and impartiality.

Turnout appears to be modest in some urban centers, where opposition supporters have boycotted the polls in protest against what they describe as a “rigged contest.”

“I came to vote because I still believe in change,” said Mariame Kone, a teacher in Abobo. “But I know many of my friends stayed home because they think the results are already decided.”

The tension has also spilled over onto social media, where Ivorian youth are expressing frustration over unemployment, corruption, and lack of political renewal.

Many argue that Ouattara’s generation has dominated politics for too long, leaving little room for younger leaders to emerge.

The outcome of this election will likely have far-reaching implications not only for Ivory Coast but also for West Africa, where debates about presidential term limits and democratic consolidation are intensifying.

In recent years, similar constitutional disputes have sparked unrest in countries such as Guinea and Senegal, fueling fears of a broader trend of leaders clinging to power.

Analysts say that a peaceful and credible election in Ivory Coast would send a positive signal to the region, while a disputed outcome could destabilize one of West Africa’s most important economies.

As the polls close, all eyes will be on the Constitutional Council, which is responsible for validating results and resolving disputes.

Preliminary results are expected within days, but tensions are likely to persist as opposition groups weigh their next steps.

For many Ivorians, this election is about more than just leadership — it is a test of the country’s democratic resilience after decades of conflict, reconciliation, and fragile peace.

Regardless of the final result, the government faces an uphill battle to rebuild public trust, strengthen institutions, and address the root causes of division.

Whether President Ouattara’s controversial fourth-term bid will be remembered as a move for continuity or a step backward remains to be seen.
