Trade Minister Patridge calls for performance-oriented ministry to drive economic growth

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-In a bid to revitalize the Ministry of Industrialization, Business, Trade and Tourism, newly sworn-in Minister George Patridge has emphasized the need for a performance-oriented approach to drive economic growth and deliver tangible results to Malawians.

Patridge, a former Press Corporation Limited (PCL) Chief Executive Officer, made the call during a ministerial briefing with senior management of the Ministry in Lilongwe.

The Minister stressed that Malawians are eagerly awaiting change and that the private sector is looking up to the Ministry to create an enabling environment for businesses to thrive, “Expectations are many out there. Malawians need to see change”

The private sector wants to see change, but for that to happen, we need to change the way we do things,” Patridge said.

Patridge emphasized the importance of setting measurable targets and working towards achieving them within specific timelines, aligning with the Malawi 2063 (MW2063) development agenda.

He highlighted the Ministry’s critical role in driving economic growth through industrialization, citing the renaming of the Ministry by President Arthur Peter Mutharika as a clear signal of its pivotal role.

During the briefing, Patridge was presented with a PowerPoint presentation outlining the Ministry’s efforts.

However, he expressed disappointment that despite these efforts, tangible results were not visible on the ground and in the lives of Malawians.

“Our duty is to ensure that Malawi deals with the 4 Fs: food, forex, fuel, and fertilizer, by creating an enabling environment for the private sector to thrive,” he said.

The Minister assured the management team that he is open to new ideas and welcomes feedback without fear of retribution, sending a strong message of an open-door policy in the Ministry.

“I am counting on each one of you here to help me achieve that,” he emphasized.

As a seasoned executive with a background in leading one of Malawi’s largest conglomerates, Patridge’s call for a performance-oriented Ministry is expected to bring about a new era of productivity and efficiency.

His leadership style and experience are likely to shape the Ministry’s approach to driving economic growth and development in Malawi.

CALL FOR AN END TO THE POLITICAL VIOLENCE IN CAMEROON

The New African Charter International (NACI) has noted the ongoing political violence against non-ruling party activists at both the national and the local level, which has threatened peace and stability in Cameroon.

NACI has received information of numerous cases of lynching and intimidation of youths, opposition party supporters and their leaders, journalists as well as non-ruling party activists, following the 12th October, 2025 voting in Cameroon. These and other vices now have led to a deterioration of the general security situation in the Central African nation, and which in turn has created also fear among the general public. Peaceful, free, fair, inclusive and credible elections are the ingredients of a clean democracy, and they are guaranteed by the Constitution of the Republic of Cameroon, we want to remind all Cameroonians.

NACI is concerned about the repeated threats of violence made by high-ranking members of the Cameroonian ruling party, and call for an end to those threats, the violence and intimidation of opposition supporters. We condemn also the decision of the ruling party to deploy heavily armed forces to unleash mayhem on Cameroonian youths whose crime is only their action to protect their votes. We urge the Cameroonian election body to immediately announce the 12th October, 2025 elections results fairly, and never to indulge in any undemocratic act that will provoke civil war in the Central African nation.

For the sake of peace and stability, NACI urgently implores the Cameroonian authorities to do a noble service to their people, and to end the violence against opponents. We call the United Nations, African Union and all relative stakeholders to immediately confront the deep-seated roots of the more than four decades-long of President Paul Biya’s corruption and dictatorship rule.

The path towards a peaceful transfer of power in Cameroon is to respect the will of the Cameroonian people, who have been yearning for change. We call on the Cameroonian security to protect the people and not thieves and oppressors, and to do everything to bring an end to the horrors of injustice, oppression, political gangsterism and sit-tight dictatorship. It is incumbent upon the Cameroonian security forces to foster a pathway towards a truly peaceful transfer of power to the leaders chosen by the people.

With regard to the escalating violence against members of the Cameroonian opposition, reports reaching NACI suggest that in most cases, neither the perpetrators have been brought to justice in accordance with the laws nor have there been necessary actions taken by the authorities in order to stop the violence against the Cameroonian people. NACI is an advocacy group and as such pledges its unflinching solidarity to the people of Cameroon as they mobilize to protect their votes cast during the 12th October, 2025 elections.

It is the view of NACI that any attempts to truncate the will of the people of Cameroon as expressed in the October 2025 election will bring the entire electoral process into disrepute, and this will not augur well for Africa. This in turn could erode the freedom of the Cameroonian people and their trust in democracy. We call on the authorities to release all detainees, party supporters and their leaders, and never yield to any call for the arrest of the opposition leader-Issa Tchiroma Bakary.

Stop the Political Intimidation!
Stop the Attacks!

Foster a Just and Peaceful transfer of power in Cameroon!

PS Davie Chilonga leaves Malawi’s Lands Ministry with transformative marks

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Ministry of Lands has changed for the better in recent years, thanks to the leadership of outgoing Principal Secretary, Davie Chilonga.

During his time in office, he brought order, discipline, and honesty to the ministry.

His leadership restored trust in a department that had once struggled with confusion and corruption.

From the beginning of his tenure, Chilonga proved himself to be a hardworking and honest public servant. He ensured that promotions were based on merit—on performance and ability rather than political connections.

Under his leadership, everyone was given a fair chance to grow, no matter their political background.

He believed that public service should reward hard work and dedication to the nation.

Chilonga also took strong action against land grabbing and corruption.

He stopped illegal land sales, cancelled dubious land allocations, and stood firm against powerful individuals who tried to abuse the system.

His decisions were not always popular with those who benefitted from wrongdoing, but he never compromised on integrity.

Because of his tough stand on corruption, some individuals who lost their illegal privileges began to fight back, spreading false stories to tarnish his image.

Many of these people were involved in selling land using fake documents or making shady deals with foreigners. Their attacks are a clear attempt to hide their own wrongdoings.

Throughout his long service in government, Chilonga has worked under different administrations and has always maintained a reputation for discipline, transparency, and fairness.

He is respected by many for making the Ministry of Lands more organized and accountable.

Any allegations made against him should be viewed with caution.

If the Anti-Corruption Bureau or any other independent body investigates honestly, it will find that Mr. Chilonga was not part of the problem—he was part of the solution. He took bold steps to clean up a ministry that had long been associated with corruption.

As he leaves office, Malawians should remember Mr. Chilonga as a civil servant who led with integrity and courage.

He has shown that one can serve the country honestly without engaging in corruption or politics. His leadership is a model for others in the public service to follow.

In short, Mr. Davie Chilonga leaves behind a strong legacy of honesty, professionalism, and accountability. He restored sanity and respect to the Ministry of Lands and deserves to be remembered as one of the few public servants who truly worked for the good of Malawi.

Brazil, Vietnam, and the Philippines Have the World’s Largest Esports Fan Bases, Nearly 30% of Internet Users Tune In

Since 2017, the global esports audience has nearly doubled, rising from 345 million to 665 million as of this year. And while a large portion of this massive fan base comes from the world’s largest esports markets, United States, China, South Korea, the United Kingdom and Germany, none of these countries even make it into the top five when it comes to the largest esports nations.

According to data presented by Skinsluck.com, Brazil, Vietnam, and the Philippines have the world’s largest esports fan bases, with nearly 30% of internet users tuning in. Here is how other countries rank on this list, showing which have the most esports fans and which, surprisingly, fall to the back of the pack.

Indonesia Has Nearly 3x as Many Esports Fans as the U.S., While Sweden and Switzerland Beat the U.K.

In 2025, the global esports market will generate $4.8 billion in revenue, nearly half a billion more than last year, and 55% of this value will come from the United States, China, South Korea, the United Kingdom, and Germany —the world’s top five esports markets. And while these five giants lead in revenue, they surprisingly don’t have the world’s largest esports fan bases. That title goes to Brazil, Vietnam, and the Philippines, three countries with the highest esports fan-to-internet-user ratios globally.

According to the latest Data Reportal Digital Global Overview Report, each of these countries counts nearly 30% of internet users tuning into esports, far above the top five markets or the global average of 16.7%. Indonesia and the United Arab Emirates round up the top five, with a 22.8% share each.

While it’s easy to assume that massive nations like China and India would have a lower share of esports fans due to their huge populations, both countries rank above the global average, with around 20% of internet users interested in esports. Also, China is the only major esports market above that average. Indonesia also highlights Asia’s dominance in esports engagement, with three times as many esports fans as the United States, the world’s largest esports market by revenue.

On the other hand, some developed Western markets and gaming industries, like the United Kingdom, show much smaller engagement, falling behind smaller countries such as Sweden and Switzerland. But that’s not the only example of larger gaming markets with fewer esports fans. For example, Italy and Canada both beat Germany in esports fandom, with 8.3% of internet users tuning in, 1% more than Germans, showing it hasn’t penetrated the mainstream audience there as deeply. Surprisingly, Japan and Russia, both major gaming markets, sit at the back of the list, with just 5.2% of their online populations being esports fans.

Global Esports Audience to hit 800 Million by 2030

Thanks to rapidly growing esports fan bases across these countries, the esports industry is set to add tens, and even hundreds, of millions of new fans in the coming years. According to the latest Statista estimates, the total number of esports fans is set to hit over 770 million by 2029, rising by an average of 25 million per year. At this pace of growth, the global esports audience is expected to reach nearly 800 million by the end of the decade.

Moses Kunkuyu appointed Leader of Opposition amid deep divisions in MCP

The former Minister of Information emerges as a compromise figure as party factions clash over President Chakwera’s earlier choice.

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Former Minister of Information Moses Kunkuyu has officially assumed the role of Leader of Opposition in Parliament.

This development has been confirmed by reliable sources within the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), marking a significant turn in the party’s internal dynamics.

Kunkuyu’s appointment comes at a time when the party has been grappling with deep internal divisions following disagreements over who should take up the powerful position in the National Assembly.

The MCP has reportedly settled for Kunkuyu as a neutral and unifying figure, seen as capable of bridging the gap between the warring factions within the party.

According to political insiders, two main camps had emerged in recent weeks — one supporting President Lazarus Chakwera’s initial choice for the position, and another opposing the decision, citing concerns of favoritism and lack of consultation.

These divisions had threatened to spill over into open confrontation, raising fears of a potential split within the ruling party.

Kunkuyu’s selection is therefore being viewed as a strategic compromise aimed at restoring stability and maintaining a sense of unity within the MCP parliamentary ranks.

Moses Kunkuyu, a veteran politician known for his articulate communication style and firm grasp of governance issues, first rose to national prominence during the Joyce Banda administration, where he served as Minister of Information and Civic Education.

He was regarded as one of the youngest and most progressive voices in the Cabinet at the time, often advocating for youth inclusion, transparency, and reforms in the public sector.

After leaving the People’s Party (PP), Kunkuyu later aligned himself with the Malawi Congress Party, where his reputation for moderation and diplomacy earned him a respected place among the party’s senior figures.

A seasoned politician and communicator, Moses Kunkuyu is widely respected for his measured tone and moderate political stance, qualities that many believe made him the ideal candidate for the role.

His leadership comes at a crucial time when the opposition is expected to play a more constructive and assertive role in Parliament, holding government accountable while maintaining national cohesion.

Political analysts suggest that Kunkuyu’s elevation could reshape the tone of parliamentary debate, bringing a more consensus-driven approach to Malawi’s polarized political landscape.

The appointment also signals a possible realignment of power within the MCP, as Chakwera and his inner circle seek to balance party loyalty with broader political pragmatism.

For now, the move has been received with mixed reactions across the political spectrum.

Some see it as a bold and unifying decision, while others view it as a temporary fix that fails to address the underlying divisions within the party.

Observers say Kunkuyu’s ability to navigate the complex political terrain ahead will determine whether his leadership will consolidate or further fragment the MCP’s internal unity.

As Parliament reconvenes, all eyes will be on the new Leader of Opposition to see how he handles the role — particularly in managing both party expectations and public scrutiny in an increasingly tense political environment.

Kunkuyu’s calm demeanor and reputation for diplomacy could prove instrumental in easing tensions, but his success will depend largely on whether he can gain the trust and cooperation of both factions within his party.

For many Malawians, his appointment symbolizes a test of leadership and maturity for the MCP as it seeks to project unity amid ongoing political turbulence.

Elsewhere in the episode, Kendall dropped another bombshell.

“I am going to the cabana to say goodbye. I used to smoke a lot of weed in there when you weren’t looking,” she noted to Kris. “I was 16 and Kylie [Jenner] was 14. We would shut those curtains.”

Kendall has made headlines over the years for her love life. Amid her respective romances with Bad Bunny and Devin Booker, Kendall was candid about her timeline for having a family.

“I go in and out of phases [of having baby fever],” she told E! News in May 2019. “Some days, I’ll be there and I’ll be like, ‘[Oh, my God], I think it’s happening. I think I have the fever.’”

Kris, however, took it upon herself to call their OBGYN to find out whether Kendall should freeze her eggs soon. In response, Kendall said, “I still have a lot to figure out before I can, like, welcome a child into my life. I’m still, like, enjoying life on my own. And I’m OK with that right now.”

Kendall credited fellow supermodel Christy Turlington for being an inspiration when it came to balancing work and family.

“She seemed so calm and collected. I really appreciated her energy through it all. And it feels like life outside modeling and family were really important to her,” she gushed. “Relationships mean so much to me, and I can’t wait to have a life with someone one day, to have kids, to create a family. Christy just gives good vibes. Maybe she cared a little bit less! I think that’s really cool.”

Khloé Kardashian made a surprising revelation about her sex life.

During the Thursday, October 23, episode of The Kardashians, Khloé and Kourtney Kardashian mentioned Julia Fox and her decision to remain celibate, which was relatable to the younger sister.

“I haven’t had sex in over three years,” Khloé, 41, shared about prioritizing family and her career over finding someone to start dating.

Khloé’s friends didn’t believe her but she stood by her comment, adding, “There’s no one I am texting or anyone’s phone number. I don’t have nudes.”

Khloe Kardashian’s Candid Quotes About Finding Love After Tristan Scandal

The reality star has previously defended her decision not to look for a sexual partner after her high-profile split from ex Tristan Thompson. Khloé and Thompson, 34, who share kids True, 7, and Tatum, 3, dated off-and-on from 2016 to 2021, ultimately calling it quits for good after his multiple cheating scandals.

“Tristan and I, we always get along great. Him and I have a great friendship relationship. We get along fine, and for my kids, I will put anything to the side. What’s done is done, so why would I be still holding on to [past drama] for?” Khloé said on The Kardashians in June 2023. “I don’t need to punish him because I am not getting back together with him.”

Khloé credited enforced boundaries for helping her start fresh with Thompson. “If I am not here, he is here. I would rather him be here than a nanny. There are still boundaries. Like, I definitely put my foot down on a lot of things,” she added. “No one is here chilling if there are no kids involved. It is always about the kids and that’s what it is. But we are not hanging out by ourselves.”

Celebs Who Have Been Candid About Practicing Celibacy Over the Years

Later that year, Khloé slammed rumors she was secretly getting back together with Thompson.

“Stop pushing this narrative. It’s tiring. But I suppose you guys will continue the narrative you want regardless of what I say so what’s the point,” she wrote in the comments section of a 2023 fan post that claimed Khloé was preparing to reveal she was dating the NBA player again. “It’s exhausting but I learned people will only understand to the level of their own perception. Most are stuck at believing the lies because it’s the narrative they want to fuel. Have fun…. Some things are just as simple as they seem.”

According to Khloé, her and Thompson’s focus has remained on their children, regardless of their ups and downs.

“I know it’s cliché, but I love everything, even the hard parts,” she told Elle in an August 2022 interview. “[My kids] challenge me as a person and being able to shape little people into really incredible big people is an honor and a gift.”

Scottish First Minister hails NBM Development Bank model

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Scottish First Minister, John Swinney has commended the development bank model being championed by NBM Development Bank Limited to support the growth of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) for greater impact in their respective societies in the country.

Swinney made the remarks after meeting directors and officials from NBM Development Bank Ltd, and other SMEs in the country on Sunday in Blantyre, to appreciate their business ideas and progress.

NBM Development Bank Ltd is a subsidiary of National Bank of Malawi (NBM) plc.

It is a Development Finance Institution licensed by the Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM), established as a long-term financing arm of NBM plc for small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs).

“I support the development bank model because it provides an opportunity for SMEs to grow by accessing financial support which is not the same as loans from commercial banks. Scotland is committed to supporting Malawi in areas like health, education, and climate change mitigation through collaborative projects, including support for grassroots initiatives and rural development.”

“Our government is committed to investing in projects that build capacity and attract further investment,” said Swinney.

NBM plc Chief Operations Officer (COO) Masauko Katsala, who is also one of the NBM Development Bank Ltd Directors, commended the Scottish First Minister for granting them an audience, while pleading for more support to continue with their mission of empowering the local SMEs.

“The Development Bank provides debt and equity capital to SMEs within key target sectors, and also assists these enterprises with business support services in order to assure viability of the enterprises. The Bank also assists these enterprises with business support services in order to assure viability of the enterprises.”

“The distinguishing feature of our financing model against commercial bank’s lending is that all applications have to demonstrate a development impact in terms of promoting environmental and social economic sustainability like financing of clean energy products and financing of projects that create jobs,’’ said Katsala.

Katsala said the Bank has already financed some women-led projects which are doing well, and that also demonstrates NBM plc’s commitment to empowering women in the country.
