When prophecy turns perilous: The dangerous gamble of Austin Liabunya’s words

…..Prophecy, in many societies, carries a heavy weight.

It is a voice believed to channel the divine, a beacon of truth that guides communities through uncertainty. Yet, when prophecy strays into reckless speech, it can become a dangerous weapon rather than a guiding light.

Such is the case with Austin Liabunya, a self-proclaimed prophet in Malawi, whose declarations preceding the country’s elections not only stirred controversy but also exposed the perilous consequences of careless talk.

Liabunya boldly told the nation that if the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) did not declare the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) the winner of the elections, then someone should kill him.

This statement, framed as a “revealed prophecy” that Lazarus Chakwera would win, was a shocking blend of divine assertion and self-endangering bravado.

In the end, Chakwera lost the election, and the nation was left grappling with the aftermath of this failed prophecy.

The question now hangs heavily in the air: when exactly does Austin Liabunya expect to be killed, given his ominous invitation?

At the heart of this issue is the reckless use of prophetic authority.

Prophets, by virtue of their claimed spiritual insight, wield considerable influence in their communities. Their words often inspire hope, caution, or action.

However, when such power is misused or taken lightly, it can sow confusion, fear, and even violence. Liabunya’s declaration was not only a test of faith but a dangerous provocation.

By tying his life to the electoral outcome, he placed himself in a perilous position and implicitly challenged those who might disagree with his prophecy.

This kind of talk is careless for several reasons. First, it undermines the sanctity of life and the respect due to human beings.

Suggesting that one’s death should be a consequence of an electoral result is a disturbing trivialization of violence.

It normalizes the idea that killing can be a legitimate response to political or spiritual disappointment.

Such rhetoric risks inciting real harm, especially in a nation where political tensions can already run high around elections.

Second, Liabunya’s prophecy, whether genuine or not, failed to account for the complex realities of democratic processes.

Elections are inherently uncertain, influenced by myriad factors including voter preferences, campaign dynamics, and institutional integrity.

To claim infallible foresight into the outcome and then stake one’s life on it is not only hubristic but also irresponsible. It sets an unrealistic standard for accountability that no prophecy can reasonably meet.

Third, the social and psychological impact of such statements cannot be overlooked.

Followers who put faith in Liabunya’s words may experience disillusionment, anger, or confusion after the election results. The prophet’s failure could shake their beliefs or, worse, incite dangerous reactions.

If the prophet himself is seen as a martyr or victim following the failed prophecy, it could embolden extremist elements or cult-like followings to justify violence in his name.

The question of when Austin Liabunya expects to be killed is, therefore, more than a morbid curiosity—it is a critical inquiry into the consequences of his own rhetoric.

By declaring that someone should kill him if his prophecy fails, he effectively invited violence against himself. Yet, it remains unclear whether he truly anticipates or desires such a fate.

Is this call for his death a dramatic form of spiritual expression, a test of faith for his followers, or a reckless challenge to his critics?

If the statement was meant metaphorically, to signify the death of his credibility or influence, then the literal interpretation would be a tragic misunderstanding.

However, if Liabunya genuinely expects or wants to be killed, this raises alarming concerns about his mental state and the extent to which religious leaders should be held accountable for their words.

Moreover, the broader community must reflect on its role in responding to such dangerous talk. Silence or passive acceptance could embolden similar behavior elsewhere, potentially leading to more threats, violence, or instability.

There is a collective responsibility to condemn rhetoric that endangers lives, regardless of the spiritual or political context.

In Malawi’s fragile political landscape, where democracy is still maturing and social trust can be fragile, the fallout from Liabunya’s prophecy serves as a cautionary tale.

It highlights the need for prophetic voices to exercise humility, responsibility, and respect for human life.

It also calls on political and community leaders to promote dialogue over division, and peaceful acceptance over violent confrontation.

Ultimately, Austin Liabunya’s words were a gamble with his own life and the nation’s peace.

The failed prophecy should not be met with silence or violence but with sober reflection on the power and limits of spiritual authority.

When exactly does he want to be killed? The answer, if it exists, remains shrouded in ambiguity. What is clear, however, is that no prophecy or political disappointment justifies the loss of life.

The nation must reject the dangerous allure of violent consequences and instead embrace peaceful coexistence and mature democratic practice.

NAP impressed with Mutharika’s partial cabinet appointment “It’s based on meritocracy, efficiency”…

.…But NAP wants those appointees with cases must answer in court till proven otherwise…

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The country’s civil rights group under the banner the National Advocacy Platform has expressed satisfaction over President Peter Mutharika’s partial cabinet appointment saying the hiring is commendable.

So, far Mutharika has appointed five ministers including State Affairs, Foreign Affairs, Finance, Agricultural, Trade.

The President has combined a number of Ministries into one.

In an interview with The Maravi Post on Friday morning, NAP Chairperson Benedicto Kondowe says the grouping “welcomes the recent cabinet appointments, which reflect a commendable embrace of meritocracy and efficiency”.

Kondowe explains, “The merging of six ministries into two demonstrates a bold commitment to austerity and prudent public spending, especially in the face of current fiscal pressures.

“While the delay in constituting the full cabinet has been notable, these initial appointments signal a deliberate, reform-oriented approach that prioritizes competence and strategic leadership over political expediency”.

NAP Chairperson adds, “We encourage government to maintain this momentum by ensuring that the remaining appointments continue to reflect integrity, inclusivity, and a results-driven vision for national transformation”.

He appeals, “We therefore urge the President to aim at expeditiously constituting the full cabinet”.

Kondowe however advised the new leadership not to end court cases which some appointees are answering.

“Of course, some of the appointees have been answering to ongoing cases, and their appointment should not be interpreted as the end of those proceedings.

“Rather, this underscores the need to prioritise the expeditious investigation and disposal of such cases to uphold accountability and public trust”, urges Kondowe.

Mutharika is yet to complete the cabinet appointment including Health, Education, Homeland Security, Transport, Defence, Natural Resources, Lands, Gender, Local Government.

‘The McBee Dynasty’ Family’s Ups and Downs: Farm, FBI Investigation, More

The McBee Dynasty: Real American Cowboys shines a light on Steven “Steve” McBee and his family as they run their farm in Missouri — but not everything has always run smoothly for the farmers.

Steve and his ex-wife, Kristi McBee, were married 28 years before his infidelity came to light, leading her to file for divorce. The pair, who share sons Steven McBee Jr., Jesse McBee, Cole McBee and Brayden McBee, separated in 2019.

Despite his personal woes, Steve’s dream of building McBee Farm & Cattle Co. into a massive business continued with the help of his sons. However, in November 2024, Steve pleaded guilty to one count of federal crop insurance fraud, throwing their family and farm into disarray.

“We take it day by day,” Steven exclusively told Us Weekly of the family’s plan in July 2025. “The situation is still ongoing. We’re hoping to have it wrapped up and have some finality to it before the end of the year. That’s the goal, just so we can move on and say, ‘OK, we’ve got this figured out. We can start life again now.’” Steve was sentenced to two years in prison in October 2025.

Ace Frehley Dead at 74: Kiss Lead Guitarist Suffered ‘Medical Issues’

Ace Frehley, the lead guitarist and cofounder of the rock band Kiss, has died at age 74, Us Weekly has confirmed.

“We are completely devastated and heartbroken. In his last moments, we were fortunate enough to have been able to surround him with loving, caring, peaceful words, thoughts, prayers and intentions as he left this earth,” Frehley’s family said in a statement to Us on Thursday, October 16. “We cherish all of his finest memories, his laughter and celebrate his strengths and kindness that he bestowed upon others. The magnitude of his passing is of epic proportions, and beyond comprehension. Reflecting on all of his incredible life achievements, Ace’s memory will continue to live on forever!”

According to his family, Frehley passed away peacefully surrounded by family in Morristown, New Jersey, following a recent fall at his home.

The news comes 10 days after Frehley announced he was canceling the remainder of his 2025 solo tour dates, citing medical issues.

“Due to some ongoing medical issues, Ace has made the difficult decision to cancel the remainder of his 2025 dates,” he wrote via Facebook on October 6.

That came just two weeks after he canceled a September 26 show as he recovered from a fall that landed him in the hospital.

“Dear Rock Soldiers, Ace had a minor fall in his studio, resulting in a trip to the hospital,” his tour manager John Ostrosky wrote via Facebook that same day. “He is fine, but against his wishes, his doctor insists that he refrain from travel at this time. As a result, he is forced to cancel his performance at the Antelope Valley Fair in Lancaster, California on Friday, September 26th.”

Frehley was best known as The Spaceman, or Space Ace, in Kiss, alongside Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley and Peter Criss. The band grew to prominence in the 1970s, eventually releasing 14 platinum albums and earning a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction in 2014.

The band retired from touring in 2023 but was scheduled to reunite at fan club Kiss Army’s 50th anniversary in November. Kiss is also set to release a 50th anniversary edition of its Dressed to Kill album on October 24.

Frehley, for his part, released his latest solo album, 10,000 Volts, in 2024 and told SiriusXM in February that he was working on a new album of cover songs titled Origins Vol. 3.

The guitarist was born in The Bronx in 1951, first taking up the guitar as a young teenager. He joined Kiss in 1973 after auditioning for the three other founding members, who had already teamed up. The band released seven studio and two live albums from 1974 to 1979, with their trademark makeup and costumes making them one of the most recognizable bands of the time.

Frehley left the group in 1982 amid creative differences with the band’s remaining members (Criss had been voted out of the band in 1980). He then formed his own band, Frehley’s Comet, before embarking on a solo career. He reunited with Kiss for a reunion tour in 1996.

Frehley married Jeanette Trerotola in 1976, and the two shared daughter Monique, 45. They were still legally married as of 2018, though Frehley had been engaged to Rachael Gordon since 2010.

He and Gordon split in 2019 after 11 years together. Around that same time, Freehley met Lara Cove at a Kiss convention in New Jersey. The two later became engaged but split in 2024.

Former Mangochi Central legislator Victoria Kingstone charged with conspiracy to murder

MANGOCHI-(MaraviPost)-The case involving Victoria Kingston, the former Member of Parliament for Mangochi Central, and two other suspects accused of conspiring to murder Roza Fatch Mbilizi, the newly-elected MP for the constituency, has been adjourned to October 17, 2025.

The adjournment allows the defense team to study the charge sheet.

The defense lawyer, Peter Mwanjasi Mwakikunga, argued that the case should be heard by the Magistrate’s Court in Mangochi District, contrary to the prosecution’s preference for a regional team.

Senior Grade Magistrate Muhammad Chande has adjourned the case to consider the defense’s application and will decide on the court’s jurisdiction.

Victoria Kingston will spend another night at Mangochi Police Station pending the court’s decision.

The case has sparked significant interest in the constituency, with many eagerly awaiting the outcome.

The defense team’s argument for the case to be heard in Mangochi District is based on the need for the court to have jurisdiction over the matter.

The prosecution, on the other hand, is yet to comment on the defense’s application.

The case highlights the challenges faced by newly elected officials in Malawi and the need for the judiciary to ensure a fair trial.

As the case unfolds, stakeholders are watching closely to see how the court will balance the rights of the accused with the need for justice.

The outcome of this case will likely have implications for the Mangochi Central constituency and the country’s political landscape.

With the adjournment, the court has taken a crucial step in ensuring that the case is handled fairly and in accordance with the law.

The court’s decision on October 17 will determine the next steps in the case and whether the defense’s application will be successful.

For now, Victoria Kingston and her co-accused remain on remand, awaiting the court’s verdict on the matter.
