HRDC: Malawi’s activism veil over MCP’s political agenda

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) in Malawi has long positioned itself as the nation’s foremost watchdog against injustice and a staunch defender of democratic principles.

However, a critical examination of its actions, allegiances, and selective advocacy reveals a troubling pattern that casts doubt on its genuine commitment to human rights.

Instead, the HRDC increasingly appears less an independent coalition and more an extension of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), cloaked in activism but driven by partisan interests.

During the Democratic Progressive Party’s (DPP) regime, the HRDC was at the forefront of demonstrations and public outcry.

It vociferously condemned the administration, highlighting economic hardships and governance failures.

The coalition led protests that, while framed as legitimate activism, sometimes escalated to destruction and looting of property.

These actions were not random but seemed to have the backing and encouragement of the MCP, a political rival to the DPP.

The HRDC’s call for the resignation of Jane Ansah, then chairperson of the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), was part of a broader campaign that aligned perfectly with MCP’s political objectives.

This synergy between HRDC protests and MCP’s political agenda raises the question of whether the coalition was acting autonomously or merely amplifying the party’s grievances under the guise of activism.

The narrative shifts starkly when the MCP, under President Lazarus Chakwera, assumed power.

The same HRDC that once condemned economic hardships and governance lapses under the DPP suddenly adopted a deafening silence in the face of similar or worse challenges under MCP rule.

Malawi experienced significant fuel shortages, severe power load shedding, and rising economic difficulties that impacted everyday citizens.

Various civil society organizations (CSOs) stepped forward to criticize the MCP government’s failures and organize demonstrations to demand better governance.

Remarkably, the HRDC remained notably silent, issuing no condemnations or calls for accountability.

This selective activism betrays a partisan bias that undermines the coalition’s credibility as an impartial human rights defender. Genuine activism would have demanded consistent scrutiny of governance failures, irrespective of the ruling party.

Further evidence of HRDC’s compromised independence is found in the appointment of its leaders to government positions within the MCP administration.

Timothy Mtambo, an HRDC leader then, was appointed to a cabinet position shortly after the MCP took office.

Such appointments raise legitimate concerns about conflicts of interest.

When activists become part of the government they are supposed to hold accountable, their ability to remain critical and independent is severely compromised.

This blurring of roles fuels the perception that HRDC’s activism is less about human rights and more about political patronage and loyalty to the MCP.

In a recent development, HRDC issued warnings and calls to the new DPP-led government to address fuel shortages, a problem inherited from the MCP administration.

While on the surface this might appear as a return to principled activism, it is important to contextualize the timing and sincerity of these statements.

The DPP government had been in office for less than 90 days when HRDC raised these concerns.

Meanwhile, during the prolonged period of fuel scarcity and load shedding under the MCP, HRDC’s silence was conspicuous.

This inconsistency suggests that HRDC’s activism is reactive and politically motivated rather than proactive and principled.

The pattern of selective condemnation, alignment with MCP interests, and the personal advancement of HRDC leaders within the MCP government paints a picture of an organization that is not truly independent.

Civil society organizations must maintain their autonomy to effectively hold power to account.

However, HRDC’s behavior indicates a troubling symbiosis with the MCP, effectively making it a political mouthpiece disguised as a human rights coalition.

Tangible evidence beyond actions and appointments also supports this conclusion.

The funding sources and affiliations of HRDC have been scrutinized, revealing links to networks sympathetic to MCP interests.

Their public statements and campaigns consistently reflect MCP narratives and priorities, rarely diverging from the party’s official line.

This alignment extends to media messaging and coordination during election periods, where HRDC’s activities often dovetail with MCP strategies, further eroding its claim to impartiality.

Malawi’s fragile democracy depends on vibrant, independent civil society organizations capable of challenging all governments equally, regardless of party affiliation.

The HRDC’s selective activism and apparent political entanglements undermine this critical democratic function.

Instead of championing human rights across the board, it appears to have become an offshoot of the MCP, advancing partisan goals under the pretense of activism.

The evidence is compelling that HRDC is not the unbiased human rights defender it purports to be.

Its history of destructive protests during the DPP era with MCP backing, silence during MCP’s governance challenges, leadership integration into MCP’s government, and selective criticism aligned with political shifts all point to an organization deeply intertwined with the MCP.

For Malawi’s democracy to flourish, there must be genuine, independent human rights coalitions free from political patronage and partisan influence.

Until HRDC addresses these conflicts and demonstrates consistent, principled activism, it should not claim the mantle of a true human rights defenders coalition.

Marshawn Kneeland’s Family Claim Police ‘Killed’ the Dallas Cowboys Star

The family of late Dallas Cowboys defensive end Marshawn Kneeland has cast suspicion upon law enforcement over the death of the NFL star.

“I truly think they killed him, I truly do,” Marshawn’s cousin Jasmine Kneeland, 33, told the Daily Mail in a story published on Saturday, November 8.

Marshawn died on Thursday, November 6, following a brief police chase after he failed to stop for a traffic violation. After ditching his car, Marshawn’s body was found near the Dallas Parkway, dead from an apparent suicide. He was 24 years old.

“Marshawn is not a violent person,” Jasmine said. “He is not a hot head. Something here is just not right. Something made him really scared and he ran.”

Jasmine continued, “This is nothing like him at all. He loves his family. He’s like a big kid. He likes making TikTok videos of the little ones in our family, he likes being around them a lot. He was generous with them, always buying stuff.”

Us Weekly has reached out to the Frisco Police Department for comment.

“I mean, why would he do something like that all of a sudden?” Jasmine asked. “That’s not the person I know. Our family is utterly devastated.”

Jasmine explained the Kneeland family was looking forward to seeing Marshawn back home in Michigan this past weekend, during the Cowboys’ bye week.

“We had this big reunion planned this week at the home where he grew up,” she said. “We do that kind of thing. All the children come, all the family come together. We eat, we laugh, we pray together. Everybody’s so proud of Marshawn. He’s come such a long way and there was such love for him.”

Jasmine added, “He was supposed to be here with us in Grand Rapids. Not dead after a police chase.”

According to 911 audio, Marshawn had texted friends and family members “goodbye” shortly before his death.

Marshawn’s girlfriend, Catalina Mancera, told authorities Marshawn had “a history of mental illness” and she was concerned for his well-being.

In audio obtained by Us on Monday, November 10, an acquaintance of the late Cowboys star said he was “not able to go to prison or to jail” in the hours before his body was found.

The extended Kneeland family — including his father, Shawn, who is currently incarcerated, his brothers, AJ and Shawn Jr., and his sister, Yahmya — issued a statement about Marshawn’s death on Thursday.

How the Dallas Cowboys Found Out About Marshawn Kneeland’s Sudden Death

“We are devastated by this tremendous loss and are still processing the depth of our grief,” the family said. “As Marshawn was making his mark on the football field with the Dallas Cowboys, he held an even more special place off the field — as a devoted son, brother, uncle, cousin, nephew, grandson, and friend.”

Marshawn’s mother, Wendy, died in February 2024, just two months before her son was drafted by the Cowboys.

The statement continued, “He was kind, determined, humble, and full of love. His light shone brightly in every life he touched, and his spirit will continue to live on through the countless hearts he inspired. We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of love and support from friends, fans, and the community. During this difficult time, we ask for privacy as we come together as a family to honor and remember Marshawn’s life and legacy.”

Learners challanged to use science in solving daily struggles as Malawi hosts 22nd COMSTEDA conference

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Learners in both Secondary and tertiary levels have been challenged to use science in solving daily life struggles.

This will be achieved by developing syllabus that suits local needs not Western cultures.

The call was made on Wednesday, Minister of Education, Science and Technology, Bright Msaka opened the 22nd Conference on Mathematics, Science and Technology Education in Africa (COMSTEDA-22) in the capital Lilongwe.

The conference comes as African nations are stepping forward to boldly claim their place as leaders in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education and innovation.

Msaka therefore reaffirmed the Malawi Government’s commitment to supporting initiatives that promote research, innovation, and evidence-based policy development.

Msaka said the administration of President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika recognises education as the cornerstone of human capital development and the foundation for economic transformation.

“The forthcoming curriculum reforms mark a bold and progressive step towards reimagining education that is relevant, inclusive, and future-oriented,” he said.

He added that the transition from Outcome-Based Education (OBE) to Competency-Based Education (CBE) represents a paradigm shift focusing on what learners can do with knowledge rather than what they merely know.

The Minister further emphasised that Malawi’s new education framework is designed to nurture innovation, creativity, and problem-solving skills the essence of STEM education.

He described the reforms as a rethinking of education from knowledge acquisition to empowerment, aimed at producing citizens capable of driving Malawi’s transformation into an industrialised and knowledge-based economy, in line with Malawi Vision 2063 and Africa’s Agenda 2063.

Banda

President of Strengthening Mathematics and Science Education (SMASE-Africa), Professor Benson Banda, called for the decolonisation of Africa’s STEM curriculum and the inclusion of indigenous knowledge systems to make education more relatable and empowering.

“Africa must not only adopt technologies but must invent them through innovation,” said Banda. “We must build confidence among our learners to face and solve real-world challenges,” said Banda.

The conference is under the theme; “Reimagining STEM for a Pan-African Future: Bridging Education, Innovation, and Sustainable Development towards Agenda 2063″.

Participants

The three day gathering has attracted delegates from more than 10 African countries, with 146 research papers presented by African scholars focusing on African challenges and solutions.

Hosting COMSTEDA for the first time, Malawi has positioned itself as a hub for educational transformation and collaboration in Africa.

The conference provides a vital platform for sharing knowledge, strengthening research networks, and promoting practical innovations across the continent.

NBM Plc commits MK300 million towards national food relief

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-National Bank of Malawi (NBM) plc has given MK300 million to the Malawi Government to support ongoing food relief efforts in response to the current hunger crisis affecting millions across the country.

Speaking during the presentation ceremony in Lilongwe on Tuesday, NBM plc Board Chairman, Grant Kabango said the Bank’s contribution aligns with President Arthur Peter Mutharika’s call for the private sector and other stakeholders to assist government efforts in mitigating the impact of food shortages.

“We believe this contribution will go a long way in supporting families currently experiencing food shortages,” said Kabango.

Kabango emphasized that the Bank is committed to ensuring that no Malawian dies of hunger, noting that collective national action can make a difference in times of crisis.

“We believe that together, as Malawians, we can overcome these challenges and make sure that no one is left behind,” he added.

Receiving the support, Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs Joseph Mwanamvekha, commended NBM plc for its timely intervention, describing it as a testament to patriotism and corporate responsibility.

“Our deep appreciation goes to the Bank for contributing K300 million towards food relief. As we are aware, many Malawians are suffering and in need of support,” said Mwanamvekha.

He further hailed NBM plc’s leadership and board for setting an example that other institutions can emulate.

“I would also like to thank the board and management of National Bank for demonstrating that it is possible, as Malawians, to work together and address our own challenges before seeking assistance from outside,” added Mwanamvekha.

The Minister noted that the government’s resource gap in addressing the crisis is narrowing, thanks to increasing private sector participation.

“Our total requirement was quite huge, but I am pleased to indicate that the gap is narrowing and it will continue to narrow because of the positive response we are receiving,” he said.

He described the occasion as both a moment of gratitude and unity.

“Today, we are not only receiving support; we are also celebrating partnership and the fact that when Malawians unite, it is possible to address the many challenges we face,” said Mwanamvekha.

Amy Schumer Deletes Pre-Weight Loss Photos From Social Media: ‘No Reason!’

Amy Schumer is starting afresh amid her recent weight loss.

“Back on my staircase bullshit again,” the comedian, 44, captioned a series of photos of her posing in a Maison Valentino dress posted to Instagram on Tuesday, November 11.

She added, “I actually left my house tonight. Who’s proud? I’m feeling good and happy. Deleted my old pics for no reason!”

Indeed, Schumer appears to have deleted or at least archived all of her old Instagram posts after recently showing off her weight loss.

Amy Schumer’s Transformation Through the Years

Back in March, the Trainwreck star opened up about her experience with the FDA-approved GLP-1 drug Mounjaro, a brand name for tirzepatide, which is prescribed for treating type 2 diabetes, weight loss and obstructive sleep apnea.

“Three years ago, I tried [semaglutide drug] Wegovy,” Schumer said in an Instagram video. “I was puking, I couldn’t handle it. I don’t know if they’ve changed the formula, whatever. But anyway, I went on this Telehealth meeting with [virtual care clinic] Midi Health, and it was cheap. I wanted to try it myself ‘cause I wanted to recommend it to my friends who are nurses and teachers.”

“They put me on estrogen and progesterone because I realized I was in perimenopause and my symptoms from being perimenopause have disappeared,” Schumer continued. “My hair is fuller, my skin is better, I have more energy, I want to get down more, if you know what I mean. I’m talking about sex. So that’s been great and Mounjaro’s been great.”

She added of taking Mounjaro, “And, look, it’s not covered by insurance unless you have diabetes or like severe obesity, which most of the internet thinks I have. But I’m having a really good experience with it and I wanted to keep it real with you about that.”

Amy Schumer Shows Off Weight Loss in New Pic: ‘Don’t Call It a Comeback’

Schumer has been candid about her weight struggles in the past, including her experiences with Ozempic, another brand name for semaglutide.

In a January appearance on SiriusXM’s Howard Stern Show, she said, “I have this gene, GDF15, which makes you extremely prone to nausea, which is why I was so sick during my pregnancy. So, I tried Ozempic almost three years ago and I was like, bedridden. I was like, vomiting — and then you have no energy. But other people take it and they’re all good. So, God bless them.”

She added, “I lost 30 pounds so quick. I looked great, but I couldn’t lift my head off the pillow. So what’s the point?”

Other stars who have used Mounjaro include Scott Disick, Whoopi Goldberg and Jim Gaffigan.

Celebrities Who’ve Spoken About the Ozempic Weight Loss Trend

“I was so paranoid that I was going to be nauseous that I kind of put it off, but then it kind of worked,” Gaffigan, 59, exclusively told Us Weekly in November 2024. “It’s weird because we live in this society where people who eat too much are told that they just don’t have any self-control. … There are people that just have no ‘off’ button to eat, right?”

“It’s obviously personal, but I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it. But then again, anonymity is a thing surrounding a lot of struggles like that,” he added of the stigma around weight loss drugs.

Why illiteracy in mayoral leadership stalls Malawi’s urban development

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-In Malawi, city assemblies have begun electing mayors, a crucial step in local governance and urban development.

However, a concerning trend has emerged: some mayoral aspirants lack formal education yet are actively campaigning for these influential positions.

The question arises: will the lack of formal education hinder a mayor’s ability to work effectively with development partners and secure funding for city projects?

The answer is a resounding yes. Formal education is vital for mayors to successfully navigate the complex landscape of urban governance, development partnerships, and resource mobilization.

This article argues why it is essential to elect literate mayors only, emphasizing the critical role education plays in advancing Malawi’s cities.

Firstly, the role of a mayor is multifaceted and requires a deep understanding of governance, finance, project management, and stakeholder engagement.

Mayors are the frontline leaders responsible for coordinating urban development initiatives that can transform cities into vibrant economic hubs.

This role demands the ability to read, interpret, and analyze complex documents such as project proposals, budgets, legal frameworks, and policy guidelines.

A mayor lacking literacy skills will struggle to comprehend these vital materials, resulting in poor decision-making and missed opportunities.

Development partners, including international donors, NGOs, and government agencies, typically require detailed proposals and reports to justify funding allocation and project implementation.

These partners expect mayors to communicate effectively, demonstrate accountability, and provide clear progress updates. A mayor without formal education may find it challenging to engage in such detailed communication, undermining trust and confidence.

This communication barrier can lead to the loss of critical funding for projects such as infrastructure development, sanitation improvement, and health services expansion—projects that are essential for improving the quality of life in Malawi’s urban centers.

Moreover, literacy is closely linked to leadership credibility. Electing literate mayors instills confidence among residents, investors, and development partners.

A mayor who can articulate a clear vision, negotiate effectively, and present data-driven arguments inspires greater trust and collaboration. Conversely, an illiterate mayor may face skepticism and doubt, both locally and internationally.

This lack of credibility can isolate the city from vital networks and partnerships, which are often necessary for securing technical assistance, grants, and loans.

In addition, managing city finances is a central responsibility of any mayor.

This task requires understanding financial statements, budgeting processes, and fiscal policies. Literacy enables mayors to scrutinize financial reports, detect irregularities, and ensure transparency and accountability in public spending.

Without these skills, there is a heightened risk of mismanagement or corruption, which can derail development projects and erode public trust. Literate mayors are better positioned to champion good governance and uphold ethical standards that safeguard public resources.

Beyond technical skills, formal education often equips leaders with critical thinking abilities, problem-solving techniques, and an awareness of global best practices. Cities today face complex challenges such as rapid urbanization, climate change, and socio-economic disparities.

Addressing these issues requires a strategic mindset and the capacity to innovate. Educated mayors are more likely to adopt evidence-based approaches and harness technology to improve service delivery.

They can also advocate effectively for policy reforms that drive sustainable urban development.

It is also important to consider the symbolic value of electing literate mayors. Leaders serve as role models, and their educational background sends a powerful message about the value of education in society.

In a country like Malawi, where educational attainment remains a national challenge, electing educated leaders reinforces the importance of schooling and motivates younger generations to pursue learning.

This ripple effect can contribute to the overall socio-economic advancement of the nation.

Opponents might argue that leadership qualities such as charisma, experience, and community connection outweigh formal education. While these traits are indeed valuable, they cannot replace the foundational knowledge and skills that education provides.

Illiterate mayors may possess strong community ties, but they must also be equipped to handle the administrative and technical complexities of urban governance. Without literacy, their ability to translate community needs into actionable policies and projects will be severely limited.

Furthermore, the fast-paced and competitive nature of urban development demands leaders who can keep pace with evolving technologies and management practices.

Literate mayors are more adaptable and capable of continuous learning, ensuring that their cities are not left behind in a rapidly changing world. They can engage with international forums, attend workshops, and access resources that enrich their leadership capacity.

The lack of formal education will indeed hinder a mayor’s ability to work effectively with development partners and secure funding for city projects in Malawi.

Electing literate mayors is not merely a preference but a necessity for the sustainable growth and transformation of urban areas. Literate mayors bring the competence, credibility, and strategic vision required to navigate the complexities of modern governance.

They are better equipped to manage resources responsibly, foster partnerships, and implement innovative solutions that address the pressing challenges facing Malawi’s cities.

The future of Malawi’s urban centers depends on leadership that combines community insight with educational competence. It is imperative that city assemblies prioritize literacy and education when selecting their mayors.

This approach will ensure that city leadership is capable, accountable, and prepared to harness development opportunities for the benefit of all residents.

The stakes are high, and the choice is clear: elect literate mayors to lead Malawi’s cities toward a brighter, more prosperous future.

WFP handover U$1 million chemical testing machine to MBS

By Precious Mtuwa

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The World Food Programme (WFP) and the Japanese Government has handed over a Pesticide Residue Testing Equipment Machine to the Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS).

The machine aims at enhancing the country’s sesame testing capabilities and meet international quality standards.

Malawi has been facing a significant challenge in the same industry, with a 70% rejection rate of its exports due to non-compliance with international quality and safety standards.

With this Liquid Chromatograph Mass Spectrometer (LCMS) Machine, Malawi is expected to address the non-compliance and unlock its potential in the global sesame markets and contribute to the country’s economic growth.

The equipment will enable MBS to conduct advanced analytical tests on sesame products including aflatoxin and pesticide residue testing.

This will boost Malawi’s sesame exports, particularly to Japan, where demand is high.

The Deputy Director General of MBS, Thomas Senganimalunje, stated that the equipment is of great significance in the efforts to achieve quality in agricultural products for trade.

MBS will be able to provide accurate and reliable testing services, ensuring that sesame meets international standards.

About 96 staff members of MBS were trained in advanced on analytical techniques by experts from the National Metrology Institute of South Africa (NMISA).

The training equipped them with the skills and knowledge to conduct complex tests and provide accurate results.

Concurring with the Deputy Director General of MBS, the Director of Industry, Clement Phangaphanga, said that this is a huge opportunity for Malawi.

The machine will benefit traders, as they will be fully certified, leading to fewer rejections of sesame.

WFP Country Director, Dr. Hyoung-Joon Lim, stated that WFP is working to build resilient, inclusive market-oriented agricultural systems that align with Malawi Vision 2063.

“LMCS is capable of detecting ultra-trace pesticide residues with speed and precision.

“This will unlock structured markets and elevate Malawi’s position in regional and global trade, especially for high-value crops like sesame, cowpea, and sorghum,” Dr. Hyoung-Joon Lim said.

On his part, the Ambassador to Malawi, Yoichi Oya, said that sesame is an indispensable food in Japan, Malawi holds tremendous potential to increase sesame production as Malawi has quality of Sesame.
