Fake press release sparks debate on inclusivity in Malawi: Minister Mary Navicha denounces “as mischief”

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-In a rapidly unfolding political drama that has captured national attention, a purported press release attributed to the Ministry of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare claiming government efforts to promote inclusivity for minority groups, including the LGBTQ+ community, has been firmly rejected by the minister herself, Mary Navicha.

The minister described the document as entirely fabricated and urged Malawians to disregard it, calling it “the devil’s work” and affirming the nation’s strong faith in God and respect for traditional values.

The controversy began when a press release surfaced, indicating that the Malawian government was undertaking significant steps towards repealing or amending laws that criminalize same-sex relationships, increasing awareness and advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights, and engaging with international partners to promote human rights and inclusivity.

The release purportedly came from the Ministry of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare, with Minister Mary Navicha’s signature.

However, the minister quickly disavowed the document in a public statement, clarifying that Malawi is a God-fearing nation that respects the moral and cultural frameworks that have been foundational to its society.

She emphasized that the government had not authorized any such initiatives as described in the release and condemned the document as a deliberate attempt to mislead the public and sow confusion.

The Maravipost Investigations, an independent news entity, undertook a detailed inquiry into the origins of the fake press release.

Their findings pointed to a group of amateur composition writers affiliated with the ousted Malawi Congress Party (MCP).

This investigative reporter noted several grammatical errors and stylistic inconsistencies in the document, which raised red flags about its authenticity.

Further investigations revealed that this same team was behind another fabricated announcement falsely claiming a reduction in fuel prices—a matter of considerable economic and social importance to Malawians.

This pattern of misinformation led to the conclusion that the MCP has apparently established a propagandist unit tasked with producing fake press releases.

These documents appear designed to implicate the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) government in various misdeeds with the aim of discrediting the Mutharika administration.

The political landscape in Malawi has been tense since the MCP’s transition out of government, and this latest episode underscores the continuing efforts by some factions to influence public opinion through questionable means.

The Maravipost Investigative reporter also disclosed that the MCP propagandist team is currently working on another fake press release, details of which remain under wraps but are expected to emerge soon.

Moreover, the MCP is reportedly mobilizing resources to support 11 individuals who have been arrested and are facing nine charges related to various crimes, including hacking incidents in Lilongwe and Dowa.

Curiously, while these suspects were initially described by the MCP as supporters of the DPP, the party’s publicity secretary, Jessie Kabwira, has been publicly expressing solidarity with them.

This contradiction has raised eyebrows and questions about MCP’s internal coherence and political positioning.

The DPP, on its part, has stated that it is disciplining its youth members who were involved in unlawful conduct, framing the matter as an internal issue within the party.

The MCP’s vocal concern over what it calls a “DPP family affair” is seen by many observers as an attempt to politicize the situation and exploit it for partisan advantage.

This complex situation presents a challenge for Malawi’s democratic institutions and civil society.

The spread of misinformation and fake news threatens to erode public trust and deepen political divisions at a time when national unity and social cohesion are vital.

It also brings into sharp focus the importance of responsible communication and the role of the media in verifying information before dissemination.

Minister Mary Navicha’s rejection of the fake press release highlights the government’s stance on maintaining the nation’s cultural and religious values while asserting its commitment to human rights within those frameworks.

Her strong condemnation of the fabricated document reflects an awareness of the sensitivity surrounding issues of sexual orientation and gender identity in Malawi’s social context.

Meanwhile, the revelation about the MCP’s alleged propagandist activities raises important questions about political ethics and accountability.

The use of fake press releases to manipulate public perception is a tactic that undermines democratic processes and the integrity of political discourse.

As Malawi navigates these turbulent waters, it is crucial for all stakeholders—including political parties, the media, civil society, and the citizenry—to prioritize transparency, truthfulness, and respectful dialogue.

Upholding these principles will be key to addressing the challenges posed by misinformation and fostering an environment where all Malawians can engage constructively in the nation’s development.

The fake press release episode serves as a reminder of the ongoing battles over narrative control in Malawi’s political arena.

It underscores the need for vigilance against false information and for continued efforts to build a society grounded in mutual respect, truth, and shared values.

As the situation evolves, the eyes of the nation and indeed the world remain watchful, hoping for a resolution that strengthens Malawi’s democracy and social fabric.

NBM plc pumps K20 million into NPL’s Mother’s Fun Run initiative

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-National Bank of Malawi (NBM) plc has given MK20 million to this year’s Nation Publication Limited (NPL) Mother’s Fun Run initiative, aimed at improving maternal and neonatal health services across the district.

The donation will go towards medical and water, Sanitation and hygiene (WASH) improvements at Kasungu District Hospital and selected health centres in Kasungu.

Speaking during the cheque presentation ceremony in Blantyre on Thursday, NBM plc Customs Road Service Centre Manager, Ivy Mshali, said the Bank’s support goes beyond financial assistance, describing it as a gesture of shared responsibility in improving maternal health care.

“These facilities are often the first and only line of care for thousands of expectant mothers and newborns. We are standing alongside NPL and other partners to ensure that hospitals are equipped, safe, and ready to serve,” said Mshali.

She noted that the contribution comes at a crucial time when the hospital handles over 200 deliveries per week, despite facing challenges such as limited beds, incubators, and sterilization equipment.

“These are not just numbers, they are stories of mothers, families, and communities. We are not only improving health care infrastructure but also restoring hope to many women in rural areas who often give birth under unsafe and unhygienic conditions.”

“The Mother’s Fun Run initiative has proven to be more than just a campaign. It is a movement that brings people together for a cause that saves lives,” said Mshali.

Commenting on the support on behalf of NPL, Nation-On-Sunday Editor, Emmanuel Luciano, expressed gratitude to NBM plc describing it as a timely and impactful contribution.

“We are very grateful to NBM plc. This is a tremendous contribution, K20 million is a lot of money and will make a significant difference in the fight against maternal and neonatal deaths.

It will go a long way in promoting safe motherhood and improving maternal health outcomes in Kasungu,” said Luciano.

Money alone does not guarantee football success in Malawi

Many people often believe that a team without money in the top-flight league will always struggle to succeed.

But this assumption is not entirely true, especially when we examine how football works in Malawi.

FCB Nyasa Big Bullets, one of the richest teams in the country, has gone three consecutive matches a total of 360 minutes without scoring even a single goal.

Results like these simply show that even if a team is financially stable, it does not guarantee success on the pitch every single time.

Bullets’ problem is not financial at all; rather, the team seems to be going through a difficult football phase, something that happens occasionally and is not always easy to understand.

Another financially strong team is Goshen City Dedza Dynamos.

Despite having a big sponsor in Goshen City, the team continues to struggle to register consistent wins in the TNM Super League.

This demonstrates that while money can help a club to some extent, it does not automatically bring success. This brings us to an important question,if money is not the full answer, why are Mighty Wanderers performing exceptionally well this season?

The answer is straightforward Wanderers have quality players across all positions, from goalkeeper to defence, midfield and attack. The squad has depth and balance.

At the moment, there is stiff competition within the Wanderers squad, which is pushing players to work harder and maintain high standards.

Their strong preparation, discipline and consistency are contributing heavily to their impressive run of form.

On the other hand, there is a team like Karonga United, which has no major sponsor but is performing remarkably well and is currently in the top five.

Karonga United is a perfect example that money is not everything; hard work, commitment and proper planning can produce results many people do not expect.

The team has shown unity, resilience and dedication qualities that have helped them secure important wins.

This proves that in football, financial limitations do not necessarily stop a team from competing if there is good coaching, good players, planning and teamwork.

The struggle for many teams in Malawi’s league is that they tend to look for shortcuts. They do not prepare adequately, which leads to poor results.Success in football requires time, strategy and consistent effort. When these elements are combined, even a low-budget team can challenge for top positions.

Therefore, the common belief that money alone is the path to football success is misleading. Football demands heart, planning, teamwork and determination and Malawi’s clubs are showing this clearly today.

Kim Kardashian Jokes ‘All’s Fair’ Is ‘Critically Acclaimed’ After Bad Reviews

Kim Kardashian is laughing off the negative reviews of All’s Fair.

“Have you tuned in to the most critically acclaimed show of the year!?!?!? All’s Fair streaming now on @hulu and @disneyplus,” Kardashian, 45, joked via Instagram on Thursday, November 6, dropping screenshots of reviews and tweets about the legal drama in between photos with her castmates and series creator Ryan Murphy.

One screenshot showed a tweet reporting the news that All’s Fair had debuted with a zero percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. A fan reposted the tweet and wrote, “Immediately pressed play.”

In another tweet, a critic called the acting in All’s Fair — which stars Kardashian, Sarah Paulson, Naomi Watts, Niecy Nash, Teyana Taylor and Glenn Close — “some of the worst” they had “ever seen in my life, along with the most predictable storylines and the most ridiculous styling.” However, the user added, “I’m obsessed, I need 14 seasons.”

A third fan called the show “Scream Queens but for wine moms and millennial gays” in response to a negative review from The Hollywood Reporter, while a fourth user declared that All’s Fair is “actually so good.”

Kardashian also included a screenshot of a quote from a BBC News review that called Murphy, 59, “the high priest of tacky, tasteless television,” adding that “this year, he has outdone himself.”

The Skims founder’s post concluded with a screenshot of a tweet from Info Disney Hulu, reporting that “All’s Fair is currently the most watched title on Disney+ in the world, ranking 1st in 28 countries — including the United States via Hulu. All’s Fair is in the top 10 in a total of 36 territories around the globe.”

It’s clear that TV critics and general audiences do not agree when it comes to All’s Fair. On Rotten Tomatoes, the Tomatometer — a.k.a. the critic score — currently sits at five percent, having made a slight jump from its zero percent debut, while the Popcornmeter — a.k.a. the audience score — is much more positive at 66 percent.

Kim Kardashian Jokes All s Fair Is the Most Critically Acclaimed Show After Negative Reviews
Disney/Ser Baffo

The show, which follows a team of female divorce attorneys who open their own practice in Los Angeles, received multiple zero-star reviews upon the debut of its first three episodes on Tuesday, November 4. The Guardian’s Lucy Mangan wrote that she “did not know it was still possible to make television this bad,” while The TimesBen Dowell said it “may be the worst TV drama ever.”

Many critics, including The Hollywood Reporter’s Angie Han, called out Kardashian’s acting.

“Her very presence, which succeeds at generating buzz and not much else, feels fitting for a show that seems to want not to be watched so much as mined for viral bits and pieces,” Han wrote after referring to Kardashian’s acting and the show’s writing as “stiff and affectless without a single authentic note.”

Amid the negative press, Anthony Hemingway, who directed four episodes of All’s Fair and serves as an executive producer, defended the show.

“You’re not going to please everybody,” Hemingway told The Hollywood Reporter on Wednesday, November 5. “You may have certain criticisms, while there are a million others who love it. I think the show holds a mirror up to each person who watches it. It’s just about: Can you connect to it or relate to it, and see yourself? It may be out of your league, it may not be anything you can connect to, and I think that goes for anything that gets presented on screen.”

Hemingway urged viewers to keep watching the show and see if they change their minds.

“I also think sometimes things may take time,” he continued. “I did The Wire. No one liked the show when it was out. They hated it. They didn’t watch it. Two people watched it every week. But it got to a point where it found a moment. I’m not comparing the show to The Wire — let’s get that straight — but it’s an example of how people can react to something in one moment, and it becomes something totally different in another time.”

New episodes of All’s Fair drop on Hulu every Tuesday until December 9.

3 Great Peacock Movies to Binge-Watch This Weekend (November 7-9)

Peacock really came to play this weekend, with an assortment of movies that can easily be described as great.

Two of Peacock’s most recent streaming exclusives are now live on the streamer, and they’re going to be popular.

That made it very easy for the Watch With Us team to pick the three great Peacock movies to binge-watch this weekend.

Our picks include a critically acclaimed film, a throwback buddy action flick and the latest installment of the Jurassic World films.

9 Must-Watch Movies on Peacock Right Now (September 2025)

‘Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale’ (2025)

Downton Abbey wasn’t just a hit British period drama — it was a cultural phenomenon even outside of the United Kingdom. Peacock subscribers can watch the TV series and two of the three films, but Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale lives up to its name by bringing the story of the Crawley family to a close.

In the 1930s, Robert Crawley (Hugh Bonneville) and his wife, Cora Crawley (Elizabeth McGovern), contemplate leaving the estate to one of their children. First, they’ll have to navigate a family scandal as their daughter, Mary Talbot (Michelle Dockery), is socially shunned because of her divorce. Meanwhile, an American guest, Gus Sambrook (Alessandro Nivola), has his eye on Mary and a desire to swindle the family out of its fortune.

Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale is streaming on Peacock.

‘The Rundown’ (2003)

The Rundown was one of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson‘s earliest action movies, and he’s considerably more slender in this flick than in many of his most recent films. That goes a long way towards making Beck (Johnson) seem like an everyman hero. He’s a bounty hunter, but what Beck really wants to become is a chef. And the only way he’ll achieve his dream is if he brings Travis Walker (Seann William Scott) back from South America to face his father.

New on Peacock in November 2025 — The Full List of Movies and TV Shows

Travis proves to be slippery to hold on to, and he’s also got a line on El Dorado, the lost city of gold. The leader of the local rebels, Mariana (Rosario Dawson), wants that gold for her people, but the owner of the local mine, Cornelius Bernard Hatcher (Christopher Walken). To save the natives and find the treasure, Beck and Travis are going to have to work together.

The Rundown is streaming on Peacock.

‘Jurassic World: Rebirth’ (2025)

Jurassic World: Rebirth resets the board of the previous movies by establishing that the dinosaurs couldn’t survive in our modern world, and only a small number are left on remote island locations. It’s now forbidden by law for humans to go where the dinosaurs are, but mercenary Zora Bennett (Scarlett Johansson) will take on that expedition, for a price.

Pharmaceutical representative Martin Krebs (Rupert Friend) told Zora that the purpose of their trip was to obtain rare materials from the dinosaurs, which could greatly advance the cause of medicine. However, Krebs is hiding something significant from Zora and her team, and he may be willing to kill to prevent it from being revealed.

Jurassic World: Rebirth is streaming on Peacock.
