Malawi CSOs side with State in prosecuting suspected MCP regime’s panga-wielding thugs

…..CSOs push for full Probe into panga violence networks

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The country’s Civil society organizations and human rights activists have renewed calls for a comprehensive investigation into the networks behind Malawi’s past political violence, insisting that the country cannot claim progress while those suspected of financing and coordinating panga-wielding gangs remain untouched.

The organizations, led by HRCC Chairperson Robert Mkwezalamba and FND Coordinator Fryson Chodzi, told the news conference in the capital Lilongwe on Friday that uauthorities must to go beyond prosecuting the foot soldiers and begin examining the powerful figures who allegedly orchestrated and protected the violence.

The CSOs argue that recent arrests of suspected zikwanje members represent only the first step toward meaningful justice.

According to them, Malawi’s darkest period of politically motivated intimidation was too organized, too well funded and too widespread to have been executed by youths acting independently.

They insist that the real architects of the violence must be identified, interrogated and made accountable, if the country is to break the entrenched culture of political terror.

Their renewed demand follows persistent allegations linking certain political operatives, including Annabel, to the coordination or sponsorship of panga-carrying groups.

While no court has yet established her involvement, the CSOs believe that her name’s frequent appearance in community reports and security briefings warrants a formal investigation.

They emphasized that their intention is not to prejudge anyone but to ensure that every allegation is handled transparently and in accordance with the law.

The rights groups further a stressed that Malawi must reject selective justice.

The grouping however warned that focusing solely on the young men who physically carried out the attacks, while ignoring the individuals who allegedly mobilized, funded or shielded them, risks reinforcing the same impunity that has fueled political violence for decades.

The CSOs further noted that many of the violent incidents witnessed before and after the 2025 elections showed patterns of coordination indicating substantial logistical support and protection from influential actors.

The rights groups also highlighted concerns about possible foreign involvement in the supply of weapons and logistical assistance to these groups, describing this dimension as a direct threat to national sovereignty.

They urged government agencies to follow all credible leads, fortify intelligence systems and ensure that no foreign national or local collaborator escapes accountability where evidence exists.

Mkwezalamba and Chodzi underscored that Malawi has reached a defining moment in its democratic journey.

The groupings said the country must confront the full truth about how political violence was financed and sustained and must ensure that all suspects including those with political connections are subjected to the same legal scrutiny as ordinary citizens.

Ending political violence, they argued, requires the political will to pursue justice not only against the perpetrators seen in courtrooms but also against those who operated behind the scenes.

They warned that without a deliberate effort to dismantle the networks that armed and protected zikwanje gangs, Malawi risks repeating the same cycle of intimidation and fear in future elections.

The activists concluded by reminding authorities that justice must travel upward, not just sideways and that the credibility of the justice system will be judged by its willingness to investigate all individuals named in connection with political terror including Annabel.

Giants Kicker Graham Gano Says Fans Have Told Him to ‘Kill Myself’

NFL kickers face an immense amount of pressure, often called upon in the game’s most critical moments, where they alone can determine whether their team wins or loses.

As a result, they often catch the ire of angry fans, and as New York Giants kicker Graham Gano revealed, they can sometimes go way too far.

“I hear everyone else’s frustration — media, fans. Shoot, ever since sports betting started happening, I get people telling me to kill myself every week,” Gano, 38, told ESPN in a story published Thursday, November 6. “‘Cause I’ll hit a kick that loses them money. I’ll miss a kick and it loses them money. It was the other day that someone told me to get cancer and die. I mean, that stuff is part of it.”

Gano has been sidelined with a neck injury that will keep him out of the Giants’ game on Sunday against the Chicago Bears.

Jason Kelce Deletes Tweet Mocking Giants Kicker Who Was Cut From the Team

“Just playing this long, you’re used to it by now. But with that being said, I see everyone’s frustration,” he continued. “And I’m frustrated too. I just want to play ball. Just constantly not being able to is tough. Doing everything I can to try to come back and play. That is my hope.”

ESPN reports that the Giants and NFL security have been tracking threats made against Gano in accordance with league safety protocols. Still, it’s hard for the veteran out of Florida State to block it all out.

“Nobody wants to hear that stuff,” he said. “I think everyone in the locker room knows if you have something going on to talk to somebody about it. I hope that everybody in here would. Nobody wants to hear stuff like that. I just want to make the fans happy, help the team win games and so not being able to do that is hard.”

He added, “I really don’t respond. I try not to see as much as I can. If I start seeing that stuff, I just shut it off. Unfortunately, that is part of the game. A lot of people will send you stuff like that. I’ll get letters, I’ll get fans telling me that stuff to my face game days, the DMs. I hear [similar stories] from other guys on the team too. It’s tough. Especially nowadays [with] mental health.”

New York Giants RB Cam Skattebo’s Girlfriend Reacts to His Horrifying Injury

Gano’s admission comes a day after Dallas Cowboys defensive end Marshawn Kneeland died by apparent suicide, following a police pursuit. His girlfriend told police that night that he had expressed suicidal ideation, and he reportedly texted his family to say goodbye.

“This is a pain you don’t wish upon anybody,” Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott told CBS Sports Texas on Thursday. “You wish none of us had to go through this. You wish Marshawn didn’t have to go through what he went through.”

Nebraska football coach Matt Rhule added in his weekly media availability that fans should remember that they never know what a player is going through off the field.

“I think we all should be careful about what we say to people,” he said. “I think we should be careful about what we tweet about people. I think we should be cognizant of what everyone’s going through.”

TNM celebrates 30 years of existence

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Telecom Networks Malawi (TNM) on Thursday evening celebrated 30 years of innovation and digital transformation in Blantyre with the company reaffirming its commitment to expanding access to modern communication technologies across the country.

Speaking during the celebration, TNM Chief Executive Officer(CEO ) Michel Hebert highlighted the company’s achievements over the past three decades and its vision for the future.

“The highlight of TNM’s 30-year existence is that we have brought innovation to make people’s digital lives better.

“We brought the Internet to millions, enabled phone calls for millions more, and introduced mobile money services that allow people to send and receive money anywhere in Malawi and even internationally,” he said.

Hebert added that TNM has consistently been at the forefront of Malawi’s telecommunications revolution, pioneering key technologies that have connected people and communities nationwide.

“For the past 30 years, we have been the first to introduce many of these technologies. Even today, we continue to bring the best innovations from around the world to Malawi to make people’s lives better,” he said.

Looking ahead, Hebert said TNM plans to continue investing in infrastructure to extend coverage beyond urban centers.

“We currently cover about 85 percent of the population. Our goal is to reach the remaining 15 percent using more cost-effective technologies such as solar-powered and simplified communication systems, while still providing access to digital services for everyone,” he said.

The TNM CEO also noted the growing importance of artificial intelligence (AI) in shaping the future of telecommunications and digital services.

“AI is transforming the way we operate, from financial services and network management to customer support, gaming, and entertainment.

“We plan to develop AI capabilities locally by setting up innovation hubs and AI labs next year. These facilities will help Malawians learn how to create AI-based solutions that meet local needs,” he said.

On the company’s financial performance, Hebert expressed optimism, revealing that TNM has experienced significant customer growth.

“We have added almost 1.2 million new customers within a year, and we expect this growth to continue. While I cannot disclose specific figures, we expect to double our performance compared to last year,” he said.

Hebert emphasized that TNM’s profits are reinvested in Malawi, benefiting both the company and its shareholders.

“All our profits stay in Malawi. They are either reinvested into our networks or distributed to our shareholders, who are 100 percent Malawians including pension funds and individual investors.

“We recently began issuing dividends about two months ago, and we plan to continue doing so every six months,” he said.

However, Hebert also pointed out that foreign exchange shortages remain one of the company’s biggest challenges.

“Like many other businesses in Malawi, our major challenge is the shortage of foreign currency, especially the US dollar. We invest billions in equipment, software, and network support from international suppliers, and we must pay them in foreign currency. If we cannot, it affects our ability to expand and maintain services,” he said.

On his part,Minister of Information and Communications Technology, Shadric Namalomba, who was the guest of honor at the event, applauded TNM for its 30 years of contribution to the country’s digital transformation, describing the company as a true pioneer in Malawi’s telecommunications industry.

The minister noted that TNM was the first company to introduce several groundbreaking technologies in Malawi, including the first mobile phone service, the first SMS platform, and the first 3G and 4G networks.

He said TNM’s growth over the years has gone hand in hand with the nation’s own technological progress.

“The government of Professor Peter Mutharika commends TNM for its innovation and encourages continued collaboration among all operators to achieve universal connectivity and build a vibrant digital economy,” said Namalomba.

He urged TNM and other operators to expand coverage to remote areas and make mobile and internet services more affordable for all Malawians.

The minister also challenged the company to improve service reliability, particularly in reducing dropped calls, and to explore opportunities to export telecom services to neighboring countries to help generate foreign exchange.

Namalomba further pledged government support in creating a conducive business environment, including reviewing the tax structure affecting the telecommunications industry.

“We are open to dialogue on developing a win–win framework that encourages investment while ensuring affordability for consumers.

“Together, we can leverage the foundation laid over the past 30 years to build a truly connected and digital Malawi,” he said.

Lotus inveils Malawi’s largest wheat, bean farming project

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Lotus Holding Malawi has set its sights on transforming the nation’s agricultural landscape with what calls “the largest project of its kind” in the country.

Speaking in an interview with Maravi Post on Friday, Lotus Managing Director George Martis
revealed that the company plans to cultivate up to 6,000 hectares of wheat and 3,000 hectares of white haricot beans for export.

He said the project, he will not only boost Malawi’s export earnings but also include a flour production facility to process part of the harvest locally.

“We have a lot to contribute to Malawi. This project will create jobs, strengthen food security, and position Malawi as a serious player in regional agriculture,”Martis said.

A Lotus Holding website, the company’s long-term vision is even larger aiming to develop up to 20,000 hectares of fully mechanised and irrigated farmland. The initial phase, covering about 1,000 hectares, is already being prepared as a model for expansion.

Lotus mission is to modernise farming in Malawi through technology, irrigation, and year-round cultivation.

Beyond wheat and beans, the company plans to introduce other high-value crops for both local consumption and export, helping the country earn much-needed foreign exchange.

With this investment, Lotus hopes to help shift Malawi from subsistence farming to commercial-scale agriculture, creating new economic opportunities across the value chain from farming and processing to transport and exports.

“We are not just planting crops; we are planting a new future for Malawi’s agriculture,” adds Martis.

Fake press release sparks debate on inclusivity in Malawi: Minister Mary Navicha denounces “as mischief”

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-In a rapidly unfolding political drama that has captured national attention, a purported press release attributed to the Ministry of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare claiming government efforts to promote inclusivity for minority groups, including the LGBTQ+ community, has been firmly rejected by the minister herself, Mary Navicha.

The minister described the document as entirely fabricated and urged Malawians to disregard it, calling it “the devil’s work” and affirming the nation’s strong faith in God and respect for traditional values.

The controversy began when a press release surfaced, indicating that the Malawian government was undertaking significant steps towards repealing or amending laws that criminalize same-sex relationships, increasing awareness and advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights, and engaging with international partners to promote human rights and inclusivity.

The release purportedly came from the Ministry of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare, with Minister Mary Navicha’s signature.

However, the minister quickly disavowed the document in a public statement, clarifying that Malawi is a God-fearing nation that respects the moral and cultural frameworks that have been foundational to its society.

She emphasized that the government had not authorized any such initiatives as described in the release and condemned the document as a deliberate attempt to mislead the public and sow confusion.

The Maravipost Investigations, an independent news entity, undertook a detailed inquiry into the origins of the fake press release.

Their findings pointed to a group of amateur composition writers affiliated with the ousted Malawi Congress Party (MCP).

This investigative reporter noted several grammatical errors and stylistic inconsistencies in the document, which raised red flags about its authenticity.

Further investigations revealed that this same team was behind another fabricated announcement falsely claiming a reduction in fuel prices—a matter of considerable economic and social importance to Malawians.

This pattern of misinformation led to the conclusion that the MCP has apparently established a propagandist unit tasked with producing fake press releases.

These documents appear designed to implicate the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) government in various misdeeds with the aim of discrediting the Mutharika administration.

The political landscape in Malawi has been tense since the MCP’s transition out of government, and this latest episode underscores the continuing efforts by some factions to influence public opinion through questionable means.

The Maravipost Investigative reporter also disclosed that the MCP propagandist team is currently working on another fake press release, details of which remain under wraps but are expected to emerge soon.

Moreover, the MCP is reportedly mobilizing resources to support 11 individuals who have been arrested and are facing nine charges related to various crimes, including hacking incidents in Lilongwe and Dowa.

Curiously, while these suspects were initially described by the MCP as supporters of the DPP, the party’s publicity secretary, Jessie Kabwira, has been publicly expressing solidarity with them.

This contradiction has raised eyebrows and questions about MCP’s internal coherence and political positioning.

The DPP, on its part, has stated that it is disciplining its youth members who were involved in unlawful conduct, framing the matter as an internal issue within the party.

The MCP’s vocal concern over what it calls a “DPP family affair” is seen by many observers as an attempt to politicize the situation and exploit it for partisan advantage.

This complex situation presents a challenge for Malawi’s democratic institutions and civil society.

The spread of misinformation and fake news threatens to erode public trust and deepen political divisions at a time when national unity and social cohesion are vital.

It also brings into sharp focus the importance of responsible communication and the role of the media in verifying information before dissemination.

Minister Mary Navicha’s rejection of the fake press release highlights the government’s stance on maintaining the nation’s cultural and religious values while asserting its commitment to human rights within those frameworks.

Her strong condemnation of the fabricated document reflects an awareness of the sensitivity surrounding issues of sexual orientation and gender identity in Malawi’s social context.

Meanwhile, the revelation about the MCP’s alleged propagandist activities raises important questions about political ethics and accountability.

The use of fake press releases to manipulate public perception is a tactic that undermines democratic processes and the integrity of political discourse.

As Malawi navigates these turbulent waters, it is crucial for all stakeholders—including political parties, the media, civil society, and the citizenry—to prioritize transparency, truthfulness, and respectful dialogue.

Upholding these principles will be key to addressing the challenges posed by misinformation and fostering an environment where all Malawians can engage constructively in the nation’s development.

The fake press release episode serves as a reminder of the ongoing battles over narrative control in Malawi’s political arena.

It underscores the need for vigilance against false information and for continued efforts to build a society grounded in mutual respect, truth, and shared values.

As the situation evolves, the eyes of the nation and indeed the world remain watchful, hoping for a resolution that strengthens Malawi’s democracy and social fabric.
