The Recyclers Association of Nigeria (RAN) has called on the Federal Government and the National Assembly to prioritize a minimum plastic recycling content policy and introduce tax incentives for recycling companies and waste aggregators.

The Association stated that these measures are essential to strengthening Nigeria’s transition toward a circular economy, attracting sustainable investments, and creating more green jobs across the country.

These were key takeaways at the Association’s 2025 Conference, themed “Recycling for Prosperity: Creating Jobs, Growing Economies.” The event brought together government institutions, private-sector leaders, development partners, and members of the recycling community.

Stakeholders at the conference examined how circular economy principles can drive economic transformation and environmental recovery, noting that this will require manufacturers to include a defined percentage of recycled materials in their products.

According to the Association, “This policy will expand the market for locally processed recyclables, reduce imports, and support local production.”

RAN also advocated for tax exemptions and tax breaks for plastic waste aggregators and recycling companies, stating that such measures will help businesses reinvest in expansion, create jobs, and strengthen resilience in the circular economy sector.

On Recycling as an Engine of Economic Growth and Sustainable Development, the conference noted that the sector has the potential to generate well over ₦100 billion annually and create thousands of jobs nationwide. Achieving this, it stressed, will require deliberate government support, infrastructure development, and targeted incentives.

Emphasis was placed on the need for legislative and policy support, as participants highlighted the importance of strengthening national laws and policies that promote circularity, including improved implementation of the Environmental Impact Assessment Act, the Climate Change Act, and the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) framework.

Other resolutions noted that Nigeria currently recycles less than half of the waste it produces—reflecting the need for stronger coordination, private investment, citizen participation, and government support across all tiers. Participants also stressed the importance of raising public awareness about the economic and environmental benefits of recycling.

The role of the informal sector was strongly emphasized, as waste collectors and aggregators within this space are central to Nigeria’s recycling ecosystem. Their integration into formal systems is vital to ensuring fairness, traceability, and efficiency.

The conference further observed that many recycling enterprises, particularly micro and women-led businesses, face major challenges accessing credit and business support. Technology was also identified as critical for enhancing digital systems for data management, waste tracking, and performance monitoring.

On private-sector leadership, the Association commended organizations such as Coca-Cola, Nestlé, Sonnex, among others, for their ongoing partnerships and contributions to sustainable waste recovery.

RAN reaffirmed its dedication to building a future where waste management contributes directly to national prosperity. The Association believes that with the right policies, particularly a Minimum Plastic Recycling Content requirement and tax incentives for recyclers, Nigeria can convert its waste challenge into a powerful source of employment, innovation, and climate resilience.

International Mugham Center in Baku has hosted an event to mark
the 5th anniversary of the Azerbaijan’s victory in the 44-day
Patriotic War, Azernews reports.

Organized by Turkic Culture and Heritage Foundation, with
support from the Azerbaijan Culture Ministry, the event program
featured a literary and artistic program, including the screening
of the documentary “Shadowless World,” which explores the nuances
of miniature art.

The evening began with the Azerbaijan National Anthem, followed
by a moment of silence in honor of the country’s martyrs.

Attendees included representatives from Azerbaijan’s diplomatic
corps, international organizations, members of the Azerbaijani
Parliament, and prominent figures from the fields of science and
culture.

Aktoty Raimkulova, President of the Turkic Culture and Heritage
Foundation, stressed the significance of Azerbaijan’s glorious
victory, which symbolizes the strength, unity, and indomitable will
of the Azerbaijani people.

She also addressed the importance of the documentary “Shadowless
World” (Kölgəsiz dünya), which showcases the rich tradition of
miniature art, a distinguished aspect of Turkic art.

Aktoty Raimkulova pointed out that the preservation, study, and
promotion of miniature art are vital for maintaining the shared
cultural heritage of the Turkic world. She described miniature art
as a powerful form of visual poetry, where colors, lines, and
images convey stories without the need for words. She also
acknowledged the important role of MP Gunay Afandiyeva, the
foundation’s first president, in the production of the film.

Following the speeches, the event continued with a series of
musical and artistic performances. Honored Artist Bayimkhanim
Valiyeva performed the “Khudayar Taznifi,” young singer Khasay
Shikhiyev sang “Ey Vətən,” and celebrated mugham singer Ayshan
Mehdiyeva performed the “Garabagh” oriental piece. Actor Tural
Ahmad recited Ramiz Gusarchayli’s poem “The Flag of Azerbaijan,”
and the dance group from the No. 3 Children and Youth Development
Center also presented a performance.

Professor Rabbiyyat Aslanova, Head of the Department of History
of Philosophy and Cultural Studies at Baku State University, shared
her thoughts on the documentary “Shadowless World.”

She praised the film for its role in not only introducing
miniature art to a broader audience but also in illustrating the
richness and aesthetic significance of Azerbaijani cultural
heritage. Aslanova explained that the film offers a deeper
understanding of miniature art, enabling both young generations and
the general public to appreciate its complexities.

She emphasized that miniature art goes beyond its visual beauty,
conveying deep spiritual and historical messages. Aslanova noted
that each viewer perceives miniatures through their own
experiences, emotions, and perspectives, making the art form a
unique reflection of both individual and collective cultural
heritage.

After the speeches, the documentary “Shadowless World,” directed
by Jamila Hashimova and Afaq Mammadova from the “Artel” company,
was screened. The film’s primary goal is to share the fine details
of miniature art with a wider audience and to shed light on the
historical and cultural values embedded within this art form.

The event was held in honor of the 5th anniversary of
Azerbaijan’s glorious victory in the 44-day Patriotic War. It also
served as an occasion to remember the heroes and veterans who

The Niger State Government has condemned the abduction of students from St. Mary Catholic Primary and Secondary School in Papiri community, Agwara Local Government Area, saying the attack occurred despite prior intelligence warnings.

The incident, which happened in the early hours of Friday, involved armed men storming the school and abducting an unconfirmed number of students.

In a statement on Friday, Abubakar Usman, Secretary to the State Government, said the government had received intelligence warning of heightened threats in the area, prompting directives for the temporary shutdown of boarding schools and a halt to construction activities.

“We had credible security alerts and directed all boarding schools in the zone to close,” Usman said. “St. Mary’s School reopened and resumed activities without notifying the government or seeking clearance.”

He added that the exact number of abducted students was still being compiled as security agencies continue search-and-rescue operations. “Security agencies have begun full investigations,” Usman said.

The government urged school operators and community leaders to strictly follow official advisories, emphasizing that the protection of lives, especially children, remains a top priority.

What exactly is the S-VCG?

The Student Venture Capital Grant — formally the Sciences, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medical Sciences Student Venture Capital Grant—is a government-backed investment mechanism targeted at students building high-impact, commercially viable solutions.

It provides equity-free funding (up to ₦50m per project); incubation and mentorship support; enterprise development resources; and a one-year Google Gemini Pro license for all applicants who complete their submissions.
STEMM fields are typically associated with innovation, research, problem-solving, and high-impact technological or scientific development.

Therefore, the goal is to support student innovators from idea stage to market-ready ventures without requiring them to give up ownership.

Why the grant matters

For decades, Nigerian tertiary institutions have struggled to commercialise research or transform student ideas into viable enterprises. The S-VCG seeks to close this gap by helping students turn research into functional products or startups; strengthening innovation ecosystems in universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education; encouraging entrepreneurship among STEMM undergraduates; supporting solutions to national challenges — healthcare, agriculture, food security, AI, green energy, climate change, and creating new channels for job creation and economic growth, among others.

Tunji Alausa, minister of education said the initiative aligns with the long-term plan to build “a skilled, innovation-driven workforce capable of competing globally.”

To qualify, an applicant must be a Nigerian undergraduate in an accredited tertiary institution, working on a project in STEMM fields; demonstrate market relevance, commercial potential, and scalability; submit a detailed project proposal, and present valid proof of studentship.

Although the scheme is primarily targeted at 300-level and above, all full-time STEMM undergraduates with viable ideas are eligible.

What kinds of projects are supported?

The programme covers Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medical Sciences — broadly interpreted to include artificial intelligence and machine learning; healthcare innovation and medical devices; biotechnology; renewable and green energy solutions; robotics and advanced manufacturing; data science and automation, as well as environmental and climate-focused technologies.

Projects must demonstrate clear problem-solving potential and commercial pathways.

Beneficiaries will gain up to ₦50 million equity-free funding; entry into a structured, government-backed incubation programme; mentorship by experts in relevant industries and guidance on business modelling, prototyping, and go-to-market strategy as well. According to the promoters, all applicants must upload their student ID card and admission/registration documents; a comprehensive project proposal (problem, solution, methodology, market potential, scalability); details of team members and assigned roles. Innovation experts say the initiative is a positive development, though not yet sufficient to meet Nigeria’s needs.
Ogwudu Kingsley, senior manager at Aust Inspire Innovation Hub, praised the scheme as a boost for campus-based entrepreneurship, noting that institutions like the African University of Science and Technology are already nurturing student-led startups.

However, he warned that the proposed funding levels remain inadequate.
“A ₦50 million grant for Nigerian students in tertiary institutions is like a drop in the ocean. The government should do more.”

Kingsley urged increased funding, tighter monitoring, and suggested that government should allocate a small fraction of tax revenues — “even 0.5%”— to sustain innovation financing across higher institutions.

In the face of mounting challenges faced by small businesses struggling under high-interest loans, the Enterprise Development Centre (EDC) of Lagos Business School has partnered with Fast Credit to launch a single-digit financing scheme aimed at empowering MSMEs.

Speaking at the unveiling recently in Lagos, Yetunde Faulkner, acting managing director of Fast Credit Finance Company Ltd., said the essence of the partnership is to ensure that micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) become scalable and sustainable through improved access to affordable finance.

“We are here to engage with EDC’s partners, who are SMEs, and provide them the opportunity to access single-digit interest-rate financing through Fast Credit.

“We are offering any amount of loan, starting with N5 million, under a partnership with one of our developmental finance partners, BOI, at a flat monthly interest rate of 0.75 percent which amounts to nine percent per annum,” she explained.

Faulkner noted that Fast Credit has committed N2 billion to the SME financing partnership, with the goal of helping entrepreneurs grow revenues faster than costs and remain sustainable. She added that the loan offering is expected to enable MSMEs to create more jobs, something the Nigerian economy urgently requires.

“We will be touching lives and families, and that, in itself, is one of the goals of Fast Credit, to make a tangible impact in the lives of everyday Nigerians, especially those in Lagos,” she added.

Nneka Okekearu, director of EDC at Lagos Business School, described the partnership as a historic step in bridging the funding gap confronting entrepreneurs.

“We have collaborations with several commercial banks, but the double-digit interest rates at which loans are offered have made it tough for entrepreneurs.

“Today, we are doing something historic. We are signing an agreement with Fast Credit for single-digit loans for our members,” she said.

Okekearu emphasised that access to single-digit credit will significantly boost business productivity.

According to her, manufacturers, for instance, will be able to expand output, while many MSMEs will create more dignified and fulfilling jobs for young Nigerians as they scale up.

“Someone who previously had just N2 million to transact business now has access to N10 million, and that means increased production capacity and healthier margins,” she explained.

She disclosed that entrepreneurs within EDC’s network who meet the requirements will be able to access N5 million at a single-digit rate of nine percent per annum.

Aviomoh Daniel, executive director at Fast Credit, outlined some of the criteria that finance firms consider before extending loans to MSMEs.

“We look out for business worthiness, profitability, and the character of the entrepreneur. Collateral is the last thing any credit firm considers. To be business-credible requires structure, and for security, it is better to register as a limited liability company,” he said.

Feyikemi Odunuga, a business consultant, applauded the collaboration between EDC and Fast Credit for creating easier access to capital for entrepreneurs.

“I feel very good about it. I actually came to represent several of my mentees who always need funding.

“I will help them put things together so they can access the loan. I am a service provider, so this is particularly important for those in the manufacturing sector,” she said.

Kachi Salvation, an EDC alumna, also described the initiative as “amazing,” noting that it will benefit a large number of businesses.

“A lot of businesses are going to take advantage of this initiative. They will also train women on how to manage their businesses, and this will be done monthly.

“The single-digit interest rate is a huge relief for businesses,” she added.

To access the single-digit loan, applicants are required to provide documents including a 12-month bank statement, BVN, NIN, TIN of key directors, company profile, valid identification, passport photograph, and verifiable credit history.

Other requirements include a direct debit mandate, utility bill, guarantor details, vendor invoice, as well as collateral valuation and perfection.

He explained this during the 2025 Press Week of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council, held in Asaba, Thursday, with the theme, “Tax Regimes and Exchange Rate Unification: Economic Implications and the Media’s Strategic Role.” Oborevwori described taxation as the backbone of government revenue and a critical tool for national development.

“Without effective tax regimes, no government can sustainably provide infrastructure, healthcare, education, and security,” he said.

He stressed, however, that taxation must be fair, transparent, and growth-oriented, warning that complex and multiple tax structures discourage investment, while weak enforcement undermines development.

Oborevwori who was represented by Charles Aniagwu, Commissioner for Works (rural roads) and Public Information, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to broadening the tax base, reducing leakages, and ensuring that every naira collected is judiciously invested in the welfare of citizens.

He described the exchange rate unification policy as a bold step aimed at stabilising the currency, attracting foreign investment, and eliminating distortions in the foreign exchange market.

While acknowledging short-term challenges, including inflationary pressures associated with the move, he insisted that the long-term gains remained substantial.

“These reforms will bring greater investor confidence, a level play field for businesses, and enhanced competitiveness for Nigerian goods and services,” he noted.

Caretaker government can still pursue economic agenda even if House is dissolved, says Ekniti

Neither trade negotiations with the United States nor the government’s economic agenda will be disrupted even if parliament is dissolved, says Deputy Prime Minister Ekniti Nitithanprapas, expressing confidence that key policies will stay on track.

Should a dissolution occur, international trade negotiations can still move forward under a caretaker government, said Mr Ekniti, who also serves as finance minister.

All planned economic measures will continue as scheduled, with the aim of completing them by December, he added.

Mr Ekniti made the remarks in a keynote address at the Bangkok Post Economic Forum 2025, “Blueprint Thailand: Restoring Stability and Building for the Future”, on Friday at the World Ballroom, Centara Grand at CentralWorld.

Questions have arisen after Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said he was prepared to dissolve the House on Dec 12, the first day of the new parliamentary session, if the opposition files a no-confidence motion.

Under the agreement that the premier’s Bhumjaithai Party signed with the People’s Party, the House was to be dissolved at the end of January. That would allow time for constitutional amendments to be debated, so that a referendum asking the public if they favour a new charter could be held alongside an election.

Mr Ekniti noted that while a caretaker administration cannot sign any binding international treaties, negotiations and the pursuit of an economic agenda can continue. The government’s priority, he said, is to maintain Thailand’s competitiveness by supporting local businesses and expanding access to new markets through free-trade agreements (FTAs) and bilateral deals.

Reinforcing Thailand’s economic resilience requires fiscal and financial stability, he told the audience.

“I am confident that stability will return, as we are laying the foundations for the Thai people. And the most crucial foundation is stable national finance and [a sound] fiscal policy,” he said.

The medium-term fiscal framework, approved by the cabinet on Tuesday, plays a vital role in maintaining confidence, he said. Coupled with the Ministry of Finance repaying a 30-billion-baht debt to the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives (BAAC), the move demonstrates the government’s commitment to preserving fiscal stability, he added.

Mr Ekniti said Thailand still has a strong economic foundation. Core inflation (excluding food and energy) is below 1%, with unemployment under 1%. The financial system remains robust, with a capital adequacy ratio of around 20%, while the global standard and the Bank of Thailand benchmark stand at 11%.

The country has a current account surplus, and its foreign reserves amount to $270 billion (8.8 trillion baht). If the $30 billion in forward positions is included, the total comes to $300 billion, which is three times the value of short-term external debt.

This means that even if the country repaid all existing short-term debt in full today, Thailand would still have foreign reserves equivalent to twice the amount of the short-term debt already paid off. These factors form a crucial foundation that attracts foreign investors, said Mr Ekniti.

“Thailand has a promising future, but delays in actual investments hinder competitiveness,” he said. “Although private-sector projects submitted to the BoI [Board of Investment] last year totalled over 1.3 trillion baht, many have yet to materialise due to bureaucratic red tape.”

He proposed accelerating investments via the Thailand Fast Pass initiative to streamline approvals. Of last year’s 1.3-trillion-baht worth of applications, ventures worth around 470 billion baht are ready to proceed, with 60 companies holding projects over one billion baht, representing about 300 billion baht in investment.

Once approved, Fast Pass holders will receive expedited permits from government agencies. “Investment is expected to flow next year at 200–300 billion baht in future-oriented industries,” Mr Ekniti added.

Commerce minister says country must do everything it can to secure maximum benefits

The Ministry of Commerce has a mission to ensure that exports, the most powerful engine of the Thai economy, return to full power and align with emerging global standards, according to minister Suphajee Suthumpun.

“The diversity of our offerings and openness are key advantages for Thailand. We can foster trade with all nations,” she said at the Bangkok Post Economic Forum 2025 on Friday.

To formulate trade policy in a challenging world, global trends must be considered, she said.

“We need to carefully select our trade partners and determine our involvement in supply chains. We must partner with reliable countries that pose low risks,” she added.

Ms Suphajee highlighted friend‑shoring, a strategy of shifting supply chains and manufacturing to allied countries. This approach is leading nations to form more trade partnerships, both on a bilateral and multilateral basis, with those they view as allies.

“We must consider how our strengths can complement other countries’ pain points and how their strengths can support our weaknesses,” she said.

As decarbonisation is another evolving trend, Ms Suphajee said the government must formulate and carry out policies that encourage the private sector to make the transition from conventional to green models.

Digitisation is another area in which Thailand is seeking to reap more benefits. Ms Suphajee said she was hopeful that the finalisation of the Asean Digital Economy Framework Agreement in April 2026 would bolster trade and exports of Asean countries.

And while Thailand faces the challenges from a declining birth rate and an ageing population, the minister sees an opportunity to establish the country as a global wellness hub.

“We can leverage our strengths in hospitality, medical care and cost of living to create a new engine for growth,” she said. “Collaboration will be key; we should partner with countries or experts in innovation, lifestyle and biotechnology to develop this hub.”

Despite solid export growth of 13.9% year-on-year in the first nine months, the pace is expected to slow in 2026 due to supply chain disruptions, decreasing agricultural competitiveness and appreciation of the Thai baht.

The high growth figure for 2025 mainly reflects a spike in shipments to the United States in the first half of the year by businesses worried about the impact of tariffs.

The minister emphasised that Thailand “must maintain balanced diplomatic relations with major powers” and reposition itself in the supply chain while strengthening connectivity within Asean and the Asia‑Pacific.

“We must leverage the strategic location at the heart of the Asean region and create Thailand as a real logistics hub connecting the North Corridor to the South Corridor and the East Corridor to the West Corridor,” she said.

She also urged Asean countries to increase intra‑regional trade and work together to develop resilient supply chains, highlighting the importance of collaboration between the government and the private sector in pursuing effective trade policies.

The diverse works are presented in various styles and media, and offer personal encounters and profound reflections on a road that has continuously reinvented itself since a great fire devastated the area in 1906, leading to the creation of its unusually straight, defining line.

KYIV (UKRAINE) – Ukraine woke up Friday to a US proposal that would force it to essentially capitulate to Russia after almost four years of war, requiring Kyiv to give up land, cut its army and hold elections.

US President Donald Trump backs the 28-point surprise plan that would also see Kyiv pledge never to join NATO.

Washington’s draft, seen by AFP, appeared to heed to the demands of the Kremlin, whose 2022 invasion has turned into Europe’s worst conflict since World War II.

Under the plan, Moscow would not only keep territories that it occupies but get more land currently controlled by Ukraine.

The West would lift sanctions on Russia and Moscow would be invited back into the G8.

The plan would also pile pressure on President Volodymyr Zelensky, requiring elections to be held in Ukraine within 100 days — another key demand being pushed by Moscow, which has repeatedly and openly called for the Ukrainian leader to be toppled.

Zelensky has said he will discuss the plan with Trump in the “coming days” — so far not saying if Kyiv would agree to any of it.

He has insisted his country needed a “dignified peace”.

“With a neighbour like Russia, defending one’s own dignity, freedom, and independence is an extremely difficult task,” he said Friday.

As Kyiv scrambled about what to do next, a senior lawmaker from Zelensky’s party reflected the mood.

“Being fucking mind blown has become our norm,” the MP told AFP.

– ‘Good plan’ –

The European Union has not officially received the US proposal but it would be discussed on the sidelines of the G20 in South Africa, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin had not commented but Viktor Orban, Hungary’s prime minister who is close to the Kremlin and Washington, said it was a “decisive moment” and the coming weeks will be “crucial”.

Reports that the United States and Russia were secretly working on a plan to end the conflict were leaked earlier this week, but the White House denied that it had prepared it with Moscow.

It said its envoy Steve Witkoff — who skipped a meeting with Zelensky this week — and Secretary of State Marco Rubio had been “quietly” working with both sides.

“The president supports this plan. It’s a good plan for both Russia and Ukraine,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters.

Washington has warned, however, that the document was still in working mode, while Kyiv said it had been presented as a “draft plan”.

– ‘De facto Russian’ –

Under the plan, the United States would recognise Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk and Lugansk regions, as well as Moscow-annexed Crimea, as “de facto Russian”.

“Ukrainian forces will withdraw from the part of Donetsk Oblast that they currently control,” the plan, seen by AFP, envisages.

The Donetsk region has been the epicentre of fighting, with tens of thousands of troops killed on both sides.

The frontline would be frozen in the southern Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions, which are both partly occupied by Moscow.

Russia would be required to give up small pockets of territory it has seized in the Kharkiv and Dnipropetrovsk regions.

Ukraine would receive unspecified “reliable security guarantees” while at the same time commit to cutting the size of its army.

It would also bind Ukraine to “enshrine in its constitution” not to join NATO but calls for European jets to be stationed in neighbouring NATO-member Poland.

And $100 billion of Russia’s frozen funds — sanctioned after its full-scale invasion in February 2022 – would go towards US-led reconstruction efforts, with Europe contributing another $100 billion.

– ‘Russia re-integrated’ –

Aside for getting to keep its conquered territory, the plan also calls for Moscow, which is under massive Western sanctions for more than three years, to be “re-integrated into the global economy”.

Sanctions would be lifted and Moscow could rejoin the G8, which it was expelled from over the 2014 annexation of Crimea.

Trump’s sympathies have flipped repeatedly between Moscow and Kyiv since he returned to the White House earlier this year, with this plan seen as a sign that he has taken on many of Russia’s key positions.

The proposal comes with Russian troops grinding forward on the battlefield and with Zelensky facing domestic pressure after a corruption scandal rocked the country’s war-hit energy sector.
