Wave of defections bolsters APC across states

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday continued to attract major political figures and grassroots supporters across Nigeria.

Several opposition leaders from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) formally defected to the party in Zamfara, Kano, and Cross River states.

In Zamfara, the Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Mohammed Matawalle, yesterday received 15 top PDP leaders into the APC, describing their decision as ‘bold, timely, and patriotic.’

The defectors, comprising state and zonal PDP executives, were presented to the Minister in Abuja by Zamfara APC Chairman, Tukur Umar Danfulani, alongside Senator Tijjani Yahaya Kaura and Lawal M. Liman.

Matawalle, a former governor of the state, assured the new members of equal treatment, noting that their defection reflected the growing acceptance of the APC nationwide.

‘Our party is more popular and united than ever before,’ he said.

‘The APC will continue to strengthen its base with strategies and welfare programmes that directly impact the people.’

The Zamfara APC Chairman, Danfulani, said the defectors included PDP Youth Leader Isiyaka M. Dabo, Zonal Treasurer (Zamfara West) Nasiru Mohammed Anka, Organising Secretary (Zamfara North) Junaidu Magaji Kiyawa, and Assistant Organising Secretary (Zamfara West) Hon. Musa Halilu Faru. Others were PDP Zonal Secretary (Zamfara North) Alhaji Lawali Aliyu Shinkafi, and ex-officio members Hajiya Rabi Bakura and Hajiya Amina Duniya.

Senator Kaura said a grand reception would soon be organised by Senator Abdulaziz Yari and Matawalle to celebrate the defectors.

‘Their coming strengthens our structure ahead of the 2027 elections,’ he noted.

In her remarks, Amina Duniya, who said she spent 25 years in the PDP, urged APC leaders to ensure fairness and justice, pledging to mobilise more women into the party.

Another defector, Bashar Mohammed Dogon Kade, a former PDP aspirant, said he left because ‘the party only favours the rich.’

Danfulani expressed optimism that the APC would reclaim Zamfara in the next general elections. ‘With our recent by-election victory and the calibre of leaders joining us, 2027 looks very promising for our party,’ he said.

500 NNPP supporters join APC in Kano

Similarly, in Kano, no fewer than 500 supporters of the NNPP from Fagge and Ungogo local government areas dumped their party for the APC.

The Managing Director of Hadejia received the defectors-Jam’are River Basin Development Authority, Engr. Rabiu Suleiman Bichi, who said their move reflected growing confidence in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership and APC’s progressive vision.

‘People are aligning with APC’s policies on development and economic renewal,’ Bichi said, citing recent defections of governors and top opposition figures as proof of the party’s appeal.

He assured the new members of fair treatment and integration into the party, adding that APC’s economic and agricultural policies were resonating at the grassroots.

Representing the APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, Kano APC Chairman, Alhaji Abdullahi Abbas, commended the defectors for joining the ‘party of progress,’ while the Kano Central APC Chairman, Alhaji Shehu Aliyu Ungogo, said Tinubu’s reforms had ‘restored public confidence in governance.’

The new entrants said they were impressed by the administration’s developmental strides, especially in infrastructure and economic growth, and pledged to mobilise more NNPP members to the APC ahead of 2027.

Cross River PDP Senator, Jarigbe defects to APC

In a separate development, the last remaining PDP senator from Cross River State, Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe, officially defected to the APC following a meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Jarigbe, who represents Cross River North Senatorial District, was accompanied to the closed-door meeting by Senate President Godswill Akpabio and was received by the President alongside Senator Kaila Dahuwa.

The defection marks another major blow to the PDP in Cross River, coming barely four months after Hon. Peter Akpanke, member representing Obanliku/Bekwarra/Obudu Federal Constituency, also joined the ruling party.

Jarigbe praised President Tinubu’s performance, saying, ‘Mr President is doing very well. His leadership inspires confidence, and I’m happy to align with his Renewed Hope vision.’

Senate President Akpabio described the defection as ‘another testimony that the President’s leadership is uniting Nigerians,’ adding that the new APC members ‘are Mr President’s children, committed to building a better nation.’

Political analysts said Jarigbe’s defection further consolidates APC’s dominance in Cross River State, where most former PDP figures-including Governor Bassey Otu’s predecessors-have switched allegiance to the ruling party.

The series of defections across regions signals renewed momentum for the APC as the country inches closer to the 2027 general elections.

Party sources said the leadership plans to hold a national reception for recent defectors in the coming weeks.

Sultan seeks protection of women’s rights

The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, has urged Nigerians to remain resolute in protecting the rights of women and the girl-child.

Abubakar made the call yesterday during a high-level town hall meeting on promoting peace and security through women’s inclusion and access to justice, in Sokoto.

The meeting, organised by Global Rights in collaboration with UK International Development and The Kukah Centre, served as a platform for inclusive dialogue on the interlinking issues of peace, justice, and women’s participation in conflict response and recovery.

Abubakar, represented by the District Head of Gagi, Alhaji Sani Umar, emphasised that Gender-Based Violence (GBV) has become a growing phenomenon that requires an all-inclusive approach, describing it as a grave offense against humanity.

‘We must stand for women. They are our mothers, wives, and daughters. Violating their rights is a violation of humanity, and protecting them is non-negotiable.

‘ It is evidently clear that ending GBV in Sokoto and Nigeria is possible, and the path is clear for all of us.

‘Moreover, women are peacebuilders and community-oriented; they remain the foundation of our brighter future,’ he said.

Abubakar commended the state government for its sustained efforts in including more women in decision-making processes, noting that such initiatives have continued to yield positive results.

He also appreciated Global Rights and its partners for organising the meeting and urged participants to take full advantage of the opportunity to strengthen the initiative’s success.

In her remarks, Mrs Abiodun Baiyewu, Executive Director of Global Rights, expressed concern that the North-West region continues to face persistent security challenges.

‘In the face of insecurity and violence, women continue to demonstrate resilience, sustaining families and building communities.

‘Their experiences and leadership are of immense value, yet they continue to suffer various forms of violence.

‘ Women’s participation in peace and security processes, as well as their access to justice, remain very limited,’ she said.

Baiyewu stressed the need to change societal perceptions about women, urging communities to recognise women as agents of peace, security, and justice.

She called on the participants to use the dialogue as a platform to promote inclusion, equity, and justice for sustainable peace in the North-West and across Nigeria.

Also speaking, Mr Cliff Gai, Senior Programme Manager, UK Integrated Security Fund (UK ISF), described the meeting as a strong demonstration of commitment to promoting access to justice in Sokoto and across the country.

‘This gathering is not just a meeting but a strong commitment to promoting community participation in ensuring justice and addressing all forms of violence in our society,’ he said.

Transparency, credibility, integrity must define elections, says Tinubu

Transparency, integrity and credibility as hallmarks of credible elections were on the agenda at yesterday’s inauguration of Prof. Joash Amupitan as chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who administered the oath on Amupitan, highlighted the expectations, which Amupitan himself emphasised when he resumed at the INEC headquarters.

President Tinubu said the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral system must be ‘beyond reproach’.

He noted that consistent improvement is vital to addressing past shortcomings and adapting to emerging realities.

‘It is important that our elections are free, fair, and credible.

‘We must continue improving our electoral process, addressing the challenges of yesterday and innovating for today,’ the President said.

He affirmed that protecting the sanctity of the ballot was essential to citizens’ right to choose their leaders and shape their collective destiny.

According to him, transparency, non-violence, and credibility must define every stage of the electoral process-from voter registration to campaigning, voting, and results collation.

While acknowledging that no electoral system is flawless, President Tinubu underscored the need for continuous institutional strengthening and reforms to sustain public confidence.

‘To maintain trust in elections, electoral integrity must be protected,’ he added.

He urged INEC to ensure resilience and guard its systems against ‘artificial setbacks.’

The President described Amupitan’s emergence as ‘a testament to your competence and the confidence reposed in you by both the Executive and Legislative arms of government.’

He reminded the new INEC Chairman that his first test would come with the November 8 Anambra governorship election, which he described as a benchmark for public confidence in INEC’s new leadership.

‘I, therefore, charge you, Prof. Amupitan, as you take on this important assignment, to preserve the integrity of our elections and strengthen the institutional capacity of INEC,’ President Tinubu said.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s democratic progress since 1999, the President noted that sustaining those gains demands ‘unrelenting commitment to the principles of transparency, inclusivity, and fairness that define democratic governance.’

The President nominated Amupitan on October 10.

He was screened and cleared by the Senate on October 17 before taking the oath of office yesterday.

Amupitan moved straight from the Presidential Villa to the Maitama office of INEC, where he received the handover notes from Acting Chairperson Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu.

He arrived at the office in a white coaster bus accompanied by senior INEC officials, top officials of the University of Jos, his last place of work, where he was Deputy Vice Chancellor, and headed straight for the conference room.

Welcoming him, Mrs. Agbamuche-Mbu said Amupitan was assuming office at a critical period in the electoral calendar.

‘Elections are the lifeblood of democracy, and expectations have never been higher,’ she said.

‘You are stepping onto a firm foundation laid by your predecessor, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, whose tenure witnessed major innovations such as BVAS and IReV.

‘The path is defined-what lies ahead is consolidation and forward march.’

Mrs. Agbamuche-Mbu received the handover notes from Prof. Yakubu when he stepped down on October 7 after ten years in office.

Amupitan pledged to uphold the highest standards of transparency and professionalism in managing the nation’s electoral process.

Addressing staff, he promised to defend the Constitution and strengthen public confidence in the electoral system, describing electoral integrity as ‘not negotiable.’

‘I want to assure you of my commitment to uphold integrity, transparency, and discipline in all our operations.

‘INEC has a clear constitutional mandate-to deliver free, fair, and credible elections that reflect the will of the Nigerian people,’ he said.

Calling for teamwork and unity of purpose, the new Chairman said the forthcoming Anambra governorship poll would be an opportunity to demonstrate INEC’s readiness to deliver credible elections.

‘The Anambra election is not just another election; it is a chance to prove that votes count,’ he said.

He urged staff members not to compromise their values and promised to prioritise welfare and capacity development.

Amupitan added: ‘The eyes of the nation are upon us. Let us restore public confidence so that voter apathy can be reduced.

‘We must show Nigerians that every vote matters.’

NBA: restore public confidence,

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) urged Prof. Amupitan to restore public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral system and lead the commission with integrity and fairness.

In a statement by its President, Mazi Afam Osigwe (SAN), the NBA congratulated him on his appointment and Senate confirmation, describing it as timely and significant for Nigeria’s democratic development.

‘Prof. Amupitan’s appointment comes at a defining moment in our democratic journey-one that demands integrity, courage, and a firm commitment to the rule of law,’ the NBA stated.

The association praised his record as a Senior Advocate, former Dean of Law, and respected legal scholar, noting that his experience in advocacy and public service would help strengthen INEC’s transparency and credibility.

The NBA urged the new chairman to address challenges such as electoral credibility, technological reliability, and institutional independence, while assuring him of the association’s readiness to partner with the commission on electoral reforms and civic participation.

Foundation to track Reserved Seats for Women Bill

TOS Foundation has unveiled 469 Tracker, a civic-tech platform to help Nigerians track where each member of National Assembly stands on the Reserved Seats for Women Bill.

The platform, accessible via www.469tracker.com, allows citizens to see in real time which senators and members of House of Representatives support, oppose, or remain undecided on the bill.

It draws its name from their numbers, 469, and aims to turn public accountability into an interactive, youth-led civic experience.

‘For too long, political participation has felt distant from young people and women. With 469 Tracker, we’re using technology and storytelling to make legislative accountability simple, and closer to our digital generation,’ said Osasu Ogwuche, executive director and convener of the Reserved Seats for Women Advocacy campaign.

‘As a young Nigerian, home or abroad, you can go on the website, check your state, and see where your representatives at national level stand on the landmark bill.

‘Our team of young techies have set up the website to reflect anytime there is a change in decision of lawmakers to support or oppose the bill, we hope we only get more support from here on,’ she added.

The Reserved Seats for Women Bill is a landmark legislation seeking to expand women’s representation in governance by adding 182 women-only legislative seats in federal and state levels.

This means 37 women-only seats in the Senate, 37 in House of Representatives and three in each of the 36 state Houses of Assembly to ensure voices of women – young and old – are heard across the nation when laws are made.

Built in collaboration with the Reserved Seats for Women Campaign, the tracker integrates open data, media storytelling, and influencer-driven advocacy to mobilise youths and digital communities.

The platform is part of a broader movement to ensure that Nigeria’s democracy is inclusive, transparent, and gender-balanced.

TOS Foundation is leading a new model of civic engagement, blending technology, journalism, and popular culture to drive public accountability.

Through strategic partnerships with digital creators, grassroots organisers, and the media, the Foundation is transforming governance advocacy into relatable, shareable, and measurable campaigns.

From social media challenges to newsroom collaborations, TOS Foundation and its partners will use the 469 Tracker to spotlight legislators’ positions, encourage public dialogue, and build momentum toward the passage of the Reserved Seats for Women Bill.

‘This is not just a website, it’s a movement. Every young Nigerian, influencer, and media ally can now use verified information to demand progress,’ said Benjamin Kalu, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, and sponsor of the bill.

The bill has received endorsements from the Rt Hon Tajudeen Abass, Speaker of the House of Representatives; Ireti Kingibe, senator representing FCT, and numerous other stakeholders in government.

Lagos joins PMI Global Executive Council

Lagos State has become the first African government to join Project Management Institute (PMI) Global Executive Council (GEC), following its leadership in governance and infrastructure delivery.

The council unites representatives from top bodies worldwide to collaborate on latest project management practice, craft enriching learning and networking opportunities, and host vibrant events.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced this at a reception in Lagos House, Marina, where the state hosted PMI board, global leadership, and regional team.

It is the first time PMI’s global board convened in Nigeria, underscoring the country’s significance in shaping global project management. Welcoming the 23-member delegation, led by President, Pierre Le Manh, the governor described Lagos’s membership as ‘a defining moment that aligns with our vision to institutionalise project management excellence in government and ensure timely, efficient delivery of infrastructure and social programmes.

‘In 20 years, Lagos will take on the world. But to realise our 30-year development plan and advance T.H.E.M.E.S+ , we need world-class project management talent. This partnership is a declaration of intent and a demonstration of responsibility.’

The governor noted flagship initiatives that embody Lagos’s transformation agenda, from Blue Line Rail, to the Lekki-Epe Expressway, serving Africa’s fastest-growing economic corridor, and the continent’s largest food logistics park, modelled after Paris’s renowned Rungis International Market.

Le Manh underscored Africa’s pivotal moment in global project management, stating: ‘Africa is entering what we call the Golden Age of Project Management – a period when the continent has the resources and ambition to build infrastructure at scale. With its young, dynamic population and bold vision, Lagos has the potential to leapfrog traditional development models. We are honored that Lagos State has chosen PMI as its partner in building this capability.’

The visit coincides with Nigeria’s hosting of the inaugural PMI Africa Week in October 2025, a certification drive designed to address Nigeria’s projected shortfall of up to 211,000 project professionals by 2035. Lagos State’s pledge to certify its public servants stands as a first-of-its-kind, government-led project management certification initiative in Africa, underscoring its commitment to institutional excellence and sustainable capacity building.

‘When Nigeria’s commercial capital throws its full weight behind project management certification, it creates unstoppable momentum. Lagos State is demonstrating that professional project management is not optional for development; it is essential infrastructure, as vital as roads or power grids,’ PMI Sub-Saharan Africa Managing Director, George Asamani, said.

At the reception, presentations showcased the state’s unprecedented infrastructure pipeline, including more than $122 billion in energy investments projected through 2045 and multiple rail lines currently under construction. Engr. Abimbola Akinajo, Managing Director of the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), reported that the Blue Line Rail now operates 90 daily trips with zero accidents since inception, transporting over 60,000 passengers each day, a testament to the state’s commitment to safe, efficient, and sustainable urban mobility.

‘Project management professionals are nation-builders, as vital to our progress as doctors, lawyers, and public servants. ‘In a world where delivery defines success, investing in project talent is one of the most strategic choices any government can make.’ Mr Governor, who accepted the designation of PMI Africa Week Champion for Nigeria, said.

The reception, attended by commissioners, permanent secretaries, and heads of agencies, concluded with vibrant cultural performances celebrating Lagos’s status as Africa’s entertainment capital. The PMI delegation, comprising 12 board directors from across the globe, concluded its visit to Lagos following a series of high-level engagements. However, PMI Africa Week activities, including the ongoing certification drive, continue through the end of October, underscoring Lagos’s growing role as a hub for global collaboration in project leadership and innovation.

Why Tinubu should be re-elected, by Oki

A chieftain of ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Fuoad Oki, has explained why President Bola Ahmed Tinubu deserved a second term.

He said the President came at a difficult time to rescue the country, adding that he was delivering on his campaign promises.

But Oki called for what he described as holistic cleansing of the seat of power, Aso Villa Abuja, for Tinubu to succeed in his rescue operation.

Oki, who spoke with reporters in Lagos, said records had shown that those who went into Aso Villa with clean records and laudable ideas towards improving the well-being of the people, most times, left with bad records.

He said the President and those who wanted him to leave good legacies after exiting office should consider the advice as a matter of urgent national importance.

The APC chieftain said the candidate on the ballot would determine the voting pattern and not the party.

He predicted that the highest valid votes cast in Lagos during the 2027 general election would be around 3.5 million, despite that the number of registered voters in the state ”is now close to six million.”

He said Lagosians should be properly mobilised for the voter registration.

Oki said rigging would be difficult during the 2027 general election if the ongoing electoral amendment that made BIVAS compulsory before voting scaled through and if the elections were conducted on a day.

He said after Tinubu’s second term, it would take the next 40 years for someone from Yoruba land to return to power as President.

He said Nigerians should re-elect President Tinubu in 2027 because he meant well for the country.

Oki said the President was on a crucial, but very difficult mission to rebuild the country from years of misrule and misplaced priorities.

He expressed worry that the last 15 years had thrown up the sentiments of ethnicity and religion that did not augur well for the country.

National Orientation Agency splashes N22.5m on animation award

The National Orientation Agency NOA, has unveiled a new animation award as well as supporting the award with a total cash prize of N22,500,000.

The award was unveiled at the 9th Lagos International Festival of Animation, LIFANIMA.

The project is being implemented in partnership with LIFANIMA.

Speaking at the unveiling, the Director-General of National Orientation Agency, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu said the project is a unique opportunity for the creative community to engage with the Nigerian Identity Project-an initiative of the NOA aimed at promoting the ideals captured in the National Values Charter (NVC).

According to him, ‘The NVC outlines seven national promises and seven citizen codes that define who we are, what we stand for, and the values that unite us as Nigerians. Through this award, we invite our animators to interpret these ideals and express them through the powerful art of storytelling and animation.’

Speaking further at the event, he revealed the theme for this year’s challenge as: ‘Who is a Real Nigerian?’ a question which, according to him, goes beyond appearances or geography but invites reflection on the true spirit of the people – resilience, our optimism, our creativity, and our collective sense of responsibility.

To participate in the award, participants are required to create a three-minute maximum animated short film, using 2D, 3D, or stop-motion techniques, that creatively explores what it means to be a Real Nigerian. The focus is not on the form of animation, but on the strength of the narrative-the story that connects with our shared identity and national values.

‘This competition is exclusive to Nigerians, designed to empower local creators and strengthen national pride. Whether you are an individual animator, a small studio, or a creative company, this platform belongs to you. It is an open invitation to use your talent to inspire others and help shape the image of our nation through your craft,’ says Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu.

According to Mallam Issa Onilu, the NOA Animation Award 2026 offers N10 million for the first prize, N7.5 million for the second, and N5 million for the third, making a total prize value of Twenty-Two Million, Five Hundred Thousand Naira (N22,500,000).
