PVL: Petro Gazz beats Galeries in dominant Reinforced debut

Lindsey Vander Weide and Brooke Van Sickle’s reunion was good as advertised, as they led Petro Gazz past Galeries Tower, 25-21, 25-19, 25-14, in the PVL Reinforced Conference on Thursday at the Dasmariñas Arena here.

Vander Weide picked up from where she left off three years after winning the championship for Petro Gazz as she delivered 13 points off nine kills, two blocks, and two aces.

‘I think we have a lot of depth this year as you saw the players coming in, anybody can step on the court and make a difference. That makes me really comfortable playing with them,’ said Vander Weide ‘I know everybody around me is gonna do their job. That showed tonight because it was really a team win.’

Vander Weide reunited with her college teammate from Oregon and two-time All-Filipino Conference MVP Van Sickle, who led the way with 14 points off 12 kills and two aces. MJ Phillips chipped in 12 points, including a game-high four blocks. Jonah Sabete had eight points, while Djanel Cheng dished out 14 excellent sets.

Brooke’s father, Gary, also had a winning debut as the new Petro Gazz head coach. ‘It was good, I think we came out a little slow, but overall it was a good team effort. I like what we saw, the little things that we can fix, we can do that practice, but overall it was a good win. Any win is a good win in the PVL,’ said Gary, who took over the coaching reins after Koji Tsuzurabara and interim Brian Esquibel.

Petro Gazz will be tested right away on Tuesday, battling defending champion Creamline for its second win in Pool B at Smart Araneta Coliseum at 6:30 p.m.

The HighRisers couldn’t give new coach Godfrey Okumu a winning debut after dropping their first Pool B game.

No one scored in double figures, with Montenegrin Jelena Cvijovic and new starting middle blocker Dodee Batindaan leading the way with nine points each.

More La Union towns suspend classes, gov’t work after quake

Although the magnitude 4.8 earthquake that struck near La Union did not cause any reported structural damage, several towns have suspended classes and government work as a precautionary measure, authorities confirmed on Thursday. As of noon, the Ilocos Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council reported that classes and government work at all levels were suspended in the towns of Tubao, Naguilian, Caba, Pugo, Burgos, and Agoo.

In addition, classes in all levels were also suspended in Bauang, Rosario, Sto. Tomas, Aringay, and Bagulin, while in Santol, officials suspended classes at the elementary level.

The Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (RDRRMO) is monitoring and assessing the affected areas. On the other hand, the Office of Civil Defense remains in close coordination with local DRRMOs to track possible effects of the earthquake or respond to any untoward incidents./coa

PBA: Gabe Norwood says he will retire after Philippine Cup

Gabe Norwood announced on Thursday that he will retire at the end of Rain or Shine’s campaign in the season-opening PBA Philippine Cup.

Norwood bared his intentions to hang it up after 17 seasons through a video posted on the Elasto Painters’ social media, describing his final run as ‘One Last Flight.’ ‘The journey has been nothing short of incredible,’ Norwood said as part of a 65-second video the team produced. ‘I’ve poured everything I had in this game, and in return it has given me more than I have asked for.’

The member of George Mason University’s Cinderella run to the 2006 US NCAA Final Four was the No. 1 overall pick of Rain or Shine in the 2008 Rookie Draft and has been among those responsible for bringing the franchise out of its early struggles.

He was part of all Rain or Shine’s two PBA titles in the 2012 Governors’ Cup and 2016 Commissioner’s Cup while also earning multiple accolades, namely his seven-time membership to the All-Defensive Team, winning three times the Sportsmanship Award and the Rookie of the Year and Mythical Team selections in 2009.

Norwood was also named to the All-Rookie Team in 2009 and claimed the Defensive of the Year plum in 2010, both honors given by the PBA Press Corps.

But Norwood’s biggest legacy is perhaps his multiple stints with the national team, first in the 2007 Fiba Asia Championship and the gold-medal run in the Southeast Asian Games that same year.

It catapulted him to many duties representing flag and country, most notably the 2013 Fiba Asia Championship and the 2014 Fiba World Cup where Norwood dunked on NBA player Luis Scola during Gilas Pilipinas’ match against Argentina in Seville, Spain.

Twice among performers at Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show 2025

Victoria’ Secret Fashion Show is marking this year’s event with an all-female lineup of performers that include Karol G, Madison Beer, Missy Elliott and K-pop girl group Twice.

The performers were revealed through the brand’s social media pages on Wednesday, Oct. 8.

‘KAROL G, Madison Beer, Missy Elliott, and TWICE take on the world’s most glamorous stage,’ read the caption that came with a video featuring brief introductions of the artists.

The fashion show, which will see the artists gracing the stage alongside supermodels, will be held on Oct. 15 in New York (Oct. 16 in the Philippines). Twice members Nayeon, Momo, Tzuyu and Jihyo expressed their excitement for the show, saying in a statement obtained by Billboard, ‘We’re so thankful to Victoria’s Secret for including us in this unforgettable event ahead of our 2026 world tour across North America, Europe, and the United Kingdom.’

Karol G, Beer and Missy Elliott likewise looked forward to performing at the fashion event.

‘I can’t wait to share the stage with such strong and empowered women, and to celebrate femininity while uplifting each other through two of my favorite things: music and fashion,’ Karol G was quoted as saying.

In 2024, Victoria’s Secret also featured K-pop artist Lisa of girl group Blackpink as one of its performers, along with Tyla and Cher. /ra

MLB: Aaron Judge still ringless as Yankees’ drought hits 16 years

Aaron Judge walked slowly from first base to the Yankees’ dugout after Cody Bellinger ended the game with a strikeout, then turned his head to watch the Toronto Blue Jays celebrate on New York’s infield.

‘You don’t like seeing it and it kind of leaves an impression,’ Judge said. ‘Make sure this doesn’t happen next year.’

New York’s 16th consecutive season without a World Series championship ended Wednesday night with a 5-2 loss to Toronto, which won the AL Division Series 3-1 and advanced to a matchup against Seattle or Detroit for the American League pennant. An hour after the game, Giancarlo Stanton walked over to Judge, seated by his locker in the quiet clubhouse, and put a consoling arm around the captain’s shoulder.

‘Didn’t execute when we needed to,’ Stanton told reporters a few minutes later. ‘Timely at-bats, timely pitches, we just didn’t do it as well as they did.’ Judge hit .500 with seven RBIs in seven postseason games, including .600 (9 for 15) with one homer, six RBIs, four walks and a 1.617 OPS against the Blue Jays. But a year after losing a five-game World Series to the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Yankees are still looking for championship No. 28.

‘This has been a tough year for me personally,’ manager Aaron Boone said after his eighth season without a title. ‘It’s terrible. It hurts.’ Now 33 and perhaps on the verge of his third AL MVP award, Judge has had eight unfulfilling trips to the playoffs in 10 big league seasons.

Instead of moving alongside Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Yogi Berra, Mickey Mantle and Derek Jeter in adding to the Yankees’ championship collection, Judge remains in the same category as Don Mattingly and Dave Winfield – star players also known for not winning a World Series in the Bronx.

‘It doesn’t mean it’s not going to happen, and he and I wholeheartedly believe that it will,’ Boone said. ‘You keep working your tail off to get back to this position and punch through.’ Judge won his first AL batting title this season by hitting .331 with 114 RBIs and 53 home runs – reaching 50 for the fourth time. He is on a Hall of Fame track with a .294 career average and 368 homers, and he has a .235 postseason average with 17 homers and 41 RBIs in 65 games.

‘It’s almost like we take it for granted because he only had 50-something homers and not 60,’ said Paul Goldschmidt, a seven-time All-Star who joined the Yankees for this season. ‘Took it to a whole new level. He’s the best that I’ve ever been around. He’s also just the greatest teammate I’ve been around, the best leader.’

It is unclear whether Judge’s right elbow, both of Stanton’s elbows and shortstop Anthony Volpe’s left shoulder might need surgery.

‘We’ll do some work on it and get it right,’ Judge said.

Asked whether an operation could be needed, he responded: ‘I’m not a doctor. I don’t know.’

A year after an AL East title and a five-game World Series loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Yankees had a winning record for the 33rd straight season. But they finished second to Toronto in the division on a tiebreaker, then rallied to win their best-of-three Wild Card Series against archrival Boston after losing the opener.

New York was outscored 34-19 by the Blue Jays and outhomered 9-4, a surprise for an offense that led the major leagues with 274 homers and scored a big league-high 50.2% of its runs on longballs, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

And just like last year, defense precipitated the demise. Second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. allowed Andrés Giménez’s hard one-hopper to skip off his glove for an error instead of turning it into an inning-ending double play, and Nathan Lukes hit a two-out, two-run single off Devin Williams for a 4-1 lead in the seventh.

‘Just missed it,’ Chisholm said an hour after the final out. ‘Been thinking about that since the play happened, still thinking about it now. Still can’t get it out of my head.’

Judge’s supporting cast needs a remake. New York’s 4.37 bullpen ERA ranked 23rd out of 30 teams. The team’s 7-8-9 batters combined to hit just .224 with a .687 OPS. Volpe batted .212 during the season and .192 in the playoffs with 16 strikeouts in 26 at-bats.

‘I’m sure there will be a lot of sleepless nights,’ Volpe said.

Goldschmidt and outfielder Trent Grisham can become free agents along with Williams, Luke Weaver, Tim Hill and Ryan Yarbrough plus pitcher Paul Blackburn, infielder Amed Rosario and outfielder Austin Slater.

Bellinger is likely to turn down his $25 million player option in favor of a $5 million buyout, and the Yankees probably will decline a $5 million option on oft-injured right-hander Jonathan Loáisiga. They could exercise a $3 million option on Hill.

‘It just sucks for the guys that this might be their last time wearing pinstripes, not getting a chance to have a long run with them and getting the championship,’ Judge said.

PVL: Eli Rousseaux fires 38 as Farm Fresh slips past Nxled

Eli Rousseaux dazzled in her PVL debut, tallying 38 points to lead Farm Fresh past Nxled, 22-25, 25-23, 25-19, 25-21, in the 2025 Reinforced Conference on Thursday at Dasmariñas Arena here.

Rousseaux poured in 31 kills, four aces, and three blocks on top of 15 excellent receptions and eight digs to give the Foxies a lift after dropping the first set.

In the fourth, the Chameleons threatened to force a decider after cutting the Foxies’ lead to 23-21. Alohi Robins-Hardy came to the rescue before Rousseaux nailed the game-winning block.

‘I was really happy to play my first game again after my injury in March so it’s a special moment for me. I’m really really happy that it went this way and it’s with this team,’ said the Belgian import, who played her first game since a gruesome ankle injury in the finals of Turkish pro league last March Trisha Tubu also stepped up with 10 points. Ces Molina finally made her debut for Farm Fresh after finding a new home last July, delivering nine points.

Robins-Hardy had 27 excellent sets on top of six points.

‘It’s not easy for us to start this conference against a good team. I was a little bit hard on them, and then they responded very well. It’s a good group with good character and personality and once they get going, they can play some volleyball,’ said Farm Fresh Italian coach Alessandro Lodi.

‘We knew it could be difficult, and it was but we had to say that in the second part of the game we were dominant and so I can only be happy and thankful for what my team did today.’

Farm Fresh eyes its second win in Pool A against Cignal on Thursday next week at 1:30 p.m.

Nxled drew 18 points and 12 excellent receptions from Chiara Permentilla in the loss. Spanish import Paola Martinez had 15 points in her PVL debut.

Chameleons try to bounce back against Capital1 on Thursday at 4 p.m.

BARMM leader asks parliament to convene, choose new Speaker

Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) Chief Minister Abdulraof Macacua had asked the regional legislature to hold a caucus to determine the successor for the late Speaker Pangalian Balindong, who died on Oct. 3, leaving a permanent vacancy in his office. ‘I have already instructed the senior leaders of the BTA (Bangsamoro Transition Authority) to hold a caucus and decide who will be the next Speaker,’ Macacua told reporters.

‘Let us allow the majority of the BTA to decide; we will wait,’ he added.

Member of Parliament (MP) Naguib Sinarimbo said under the Bangsamoro Organic Law (BOL), the chief minister may call for a special session to elect a new Speaker of the parliament when the incumbent is incapacitated.

The 80-member parliament is currently in recess, supposedly for the Oct. 13 regional election, which has since been reset for next year.

The Supreme Court had set the polls for not later than March 31 next year, as it tasked the parliament to craft a new law creating 32 parliamentary districts, also not later than Oct. 30 this year. Jamaleah Lao Benito, head of the BTA’s public information unit, said that as of Tuesday, Macacua has not yet called for a special session.

Following the high court’s edict, the parliament has practically three weeks left to come up with such a measure.

‘We have not received any advisory for a special session; we will just wait,’ Benito told the Inquirer.

Macacua, who is also an MP, stated that the regional government is determined to pass a new law on parliamentary districts as directed by the Supreme Court.

‘We will pass the enabling law within the period set by the highest court,’ he said.

In its Sept. 30 ruling, the high court junked the Bangsamoro Autonomy Act (BAA) No. 77 for, among others, having been passed way after the election period had set in. The court also declared its predecessor measure, BAA 58, as inadequate for the election of MPs based on districts because it was crafted with Sulu province still part of the BARMM.

A prior high court ruling declared Sulu as not part of the autonomous region because the majority of its voters rejected the BOL in a 2019 plebiscite.

Lawyer John Rex Laudiangco, Commission on Elections spokesperson, said the poll body is optimistic the BTA can come up with new legislation ‘because we are running out of time.’

‘The new legislation is vital in the preparation of the Comelec because we need to inform the electorate which district and whose candidates they will choose from,’ Laudiangco said in a radio interview here.

The death of Balindong comes at a crucial time for the BARMM parliament, creating a big void in its leadership.

‘During the crucial years of the BTA, his leadership helped lay the foundation of our government. His life’s work and commitment to justice and service will continue to inspire us as we carry forward the struggle for lasting peace in our homeland,’ Deputy Speaker Omar Yasser Sema said of Balindong.

Meanwhile, Education Minister and MP Mohaqher Iqbal is suspicious about moves to delay the first parliamentary elections in the region and have it coincide with the 2028 general elections.

Remulla will revive probe into 2021 Pharmally corruption scandal

Newly installed Ombudsman Jesus Crispin Remulla on Thursday said he intends to review the corruption scandal involving Pharmally Pharmaceutical Corporation.

Remulla made this statement amid calls to revisit the 2021 Pharmally scandal. ‘We’ll take a look at that because it seems like it’s been forgotten, buried in oblivion,’ Remulla said in an interview.

‘But these kinds of cases shouldn’t really be forgotten because we know the allegations have weight, and many are saying that something bad happened there,’ the ombudsman stressed.

‘The Senate had a hearing but did not move forward from there,’ he recalled. ‘So we need to revisit it.’

When asked if the reopening of the investigation might involve former President Rodrigo Duterte, Remulla said he was unsure.

‘The responsibility will always depend on the evidence,’ Remulla said.

‘We will go as far as the evidence takes us,’ he told reporters. Pharmally is the pharmaceutical corporation that was investigated by the Senate over alleged irregularities in government deals worth billions of pesos for COVID-19 response supplies despite having a paid-up capital of only P625,000. /apl
