Osun: Adeleke orders probe of alleged killings by Amotekun operatives

Osun governor, Ademola Adeleke, has ordered investigation into alleged killing of three people by operatives of Amotekun Corps in Akinlalu community, Ife North Local Government Area of the state.

The spokesperson for the Governor, Mallam Olawale Rasheed who announced this in a statement on Saturday also revealed that Adeleke had sent a top level government delegation to the community.

According to the statement, Adeleke expressed deep shock at the deaths of some individuals from the town after receiving a preliminary report from his Special Adviser on Security Matters on the incident.

‘After receiving the preliminary report, further briefings were presented to the Deputy Governor by the security team with a State Security council meeting now scheduled for Monday to further deliberate on the issue and other emerging security threat in the state.

‘Adeleke has vowed to dig into the root of the fatal encounter between the people of the town and the Amotekun security service, directing that a high powered delegation of government and service chiefs will visit the affected town after the scheduled state security council meeting on Monday.

‘Those expected on the delegation includes the Special Adviser on Security Matters to the state governor, the Commissioner for Information, the Commissioner for political affairs, the Commissioner for Transportation, the Attorney General of the State, the Special Adviser on Legal Matters to the governor and service chiefs of the various security agencies.

‘I am a rule of law Governor. This matter is being investigated and any infraction will be dealt with within the context of the law. I have ordered a security council meeting on this incident and others such as fears of spill over from Kwara banditry attacks.

‘I sent my condolences to the victims of this unfortunate incident. I urge the good people of Akinlalu to keep calm as our government acts on the matter. I feel their pains but investigations are ongoing’, the governor was quoted as saying.

The Governor also commiserated with all those who lost loved ones in the tragic incident and prayed to God almighty to comfort them.

Amotekun Corps Shot three dead in Akinpelu – Group

Recall that a group, Ìgbìnmó Májékóbájé Ilé-Yorùbá, had on Thursday accused operatives of Amotekun Corps of killing three members of the same family and injuring several others in Akinlalu community

The group also alleged that the Osun State Amotekun commander attempted to cover up the murder by presenting the victims as armed bandits, despite evidence that they were innocent civilians were attacked inside their compound.

In a statement issued on Thursday and signed by the Convener, Olusola Badero, through its Home Director, Princess Balogun, the group said the victims who were not caught with any weapons or incriminating items were shot at close range, and left to die in their compound.

‘Shockingly, the Amotekun operatives later returned, opened fire on those who came to rescue the injured, and carried away the corpses, while labeling them as bandits. This is not only barbaric but also a complete betrayal of public trust.’

‘We are a people of peace and law-abiding citizens. But we cannot continue to fold our arms and watch our people killed like animals by those empowered to defend them. Governor Adeleke must demonstrate leadership by bringing the killers to justice and suspending the commander who orchestrated a false narrative to shield his men from accountability,’ the union said.

It also accused Adeleke of indifference, saying that since the killings occurred, he had not ordered any investigation or arrest.

The group vowed vow to pursue legal actions both locally and internationally if justice is not served.

It gave the Governor seven-day ultimatum to investigate the incident and bring the culprits to justice.

‘We will not allow this case to be buried. We will mobilise our people in Yorubaland and in the diaspora to ensure that the truth prevails and that the victims do not die in vain. If Governor Adeleke refuses to act, history will remember him as a leader who failed to protect his people,’ the Yoruba Union added.

City going after illegal structures in watersheds

Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival has ordered the immediate mobilization of city enforcement and engineering teams to crack down on illegal structures and fast-track reforestation efforts inside the Central Cebu Protected Landscape (CCPL).

The directive came during a joint site visit and coordination meeting held the other day at the CCPL Cantipla office, where city officials, representatives from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-CCPL, and the KEEP Forest Foundation mapped out urgent protection measures for the watershed.

The visit focused on strengthening riparian zone protection, accelerating forest rehabilitation, and initiating legal action against unauthorized developments within the protected area. A riparian zone is the stretch of land that borders rivers, streams, and other bodies of water that plays a vital role in maintaining the health of both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems.

Technical teams from the city and DENR conducted on-site inspections of priority zones and received a briefing on ongoing restoration activities.

A roundtable discussion followed according to the city’s PIO, aligning the roles and schedules of partner agencies and community stakeholders.

KEEP Forest Foundation, a local conservation group active in Central Cebu, presented long-term volunteer maintenance plans and proposals for sustained site care that integrates reforestation, environmental law enforcement, and community education to foster collective stewardship and sustainable development.

A central technical priority identified during the meeting was the issuance of notices of violation and expedited inspections of alleged illegal structures.

Archival directed city teams to coordinate closely with DENR-CCPL to ensure swift legal and administrative action, while upholding due process.

Officials emphasized that enforcement will be paired with community-based restoration and livelihood support to ensure both protection and inclusive stewardship of the watershed.

The collaboration signals a renewed commitment to safeguarding Central Cebu’s ecological integrity through coordinated governance, civic participation, and science-based restoration.

The 6-0 forward debuted with 10 points including a triple, four rebounds, five assists and a steal without committing a single turnover before fouling out late in the final quarter.

It was Sleat’s eight points in the opening period that sparked the breakaway run and set the tone for the one-sided win.

‘Patrick was big for us,’ said UPHSD coach Olsen Racela, referring to his former player when he was still with the Tams in the UAAP. ‘He is one player who can create, unselfish and looks for his open teammates and has experience.’

Agricultural trade growth slows in August

The country’s agricultural trade continued to grow in August, but at a significantly slower pace than the previous month, with both exports and imports registering weaker gains.

Latest data from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) showed that total agricultural trade reached $2.33 billion in August, reflecting an annual increase of 0.9 percent.

In contrast, July saw a 14.5-percent gain at $2.53 billion, while August 2024 total trade reached $2.3 billion, marking a 5.1-percent increase.

Agricultural exports in August rose to $723.47 million, up by 12.3 percent from $644.14 million in the same month last year, and accounted for roughly 10 percent of the country’s total exports.

‘The top 10 commodity groups in terms of value of agricultural exports contributed $707.53 million or 97.8 percent to the total agricultural export revenue in August,’ the PSA said, noting that the combined agricultural export value of these top commodities posted an annual increase of 16.3 percent during the month.

‘Among the commodity groups, edible fruit and nuts; peel of citrus fruit or melons which was valued at $243.23 million comprised the largest share of 33.6 percent to the total agricultural exports in August,’ it added.

The Philippines exported $70.88 million worth of agricultural products to Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member countries in August, accounting for 7.5 percent of total exports to the region.

Malaysia emerged as the top buyer, taking in $38.26 million or more than half of the country’s agricultural exports to ASEAN during the month.

As for Philippine imports, the value of farm goods brought in reached $1.61 billion, representing a 15.2-percent share of the country’s total imports in August.

It registered a decrease of 3.5 percent from the $1.67 billion worth of agricultural imports in August 2024.

‘Among the major commodity groups, cereals accounted for the largest share worth $311.09 million or 19.4 percent of the total value of agricultural imports in August,’ the PSA said.

The country’s agricultural imports from ASEAN member countries in August amounted to $672.15 million, accounting for 23 percent of total imports from the region.

Vietnam was the top supplier, providing $189.39 million or 28.2 percent of the Philippines’ total agricultural imports from the regional bloc during the month.

Tinubu rehabilitated me after rebels cut off my hands – CCD Director

The Executive Director of the Centre for Citizens with Disabilities (CCD), Mr David Anyaele, has revealed how President Bola Tinubu rehabilitated him after Sierra Leone rebels amputated his hands in 1999.

He said he wrote to various governments, including Southeast governors, seeking support after his ordeal was televised, but his requests were rejected.

Anyaele spoke on Friday evening during the Nkata Umuibe, a monthly speakers’ series organised by the Centre for Memories (CFM), Enugu, with the theme ‘Onye Aghana Nwanne Ya’.

He explained that the assailants were fighters of the Revolutionary United Front (RUF), which waged war in Sierra Leone between 1991 and 2002.

The disability rights activist said after his request to Southeast governors and others were rejected, he later sent the same appeal to then Lagos governor Bola Tinubu, who directed doctors to examine him.

Medical reports recommended overseas treatment, leading to his rehabilitation in Germany, where artificial hands were fitted.

‘I must thank the Tinubu administration and the good people of Lagos State for their hospitality,’ Anyaele said.

He lamented that living with disability in Igboland often meant enduring discrimination and neglect.

Recounting his ordeal, Anyaele said he was on a business trip to Freetown when he was attacked solely because he was Nigerian.

He recalled that his pleas not to be mutilated were ignored, stressing that many Nigerians faced similar inhuman treatment during Sierra Leone’s civil war.

He said Nigerian-led ECOMOG troops rescued him while he lay in pain and rushed him to hospital, saving his life.

‘That experience changed my world as I suddenly found myself in the disability community, without knowing what the future held,’ he said.

He added that he was subjected to stigma, discrimination, isolation, and exclusion because of his disability.

Appealing to Igbos, Anyaele urged them not to discriminate against persons with disabilities but to embrace inclusion, noting disability could happen to anyone anytime.

He commended Gov. Alex Otti for establishing the Abia State Disability Commission and urged Gov. Peter Mbah to replicate it in Enugu State.

Brake Failure Horror: Dangote truck crushes five in Ogun

Tragedy struck on Friday evening at the Alapoka axis of the Papalanto-Ilaro Road in Ogun State when a Dangote Cement truck lost its brakes and rammed into a tricycle, killing all five occupants instantly.

The fatal accident, which occurred around 8:25 p.m., involved an unregistered tricycle and a Dangote truck bearing the number plate GRZ 767 XA. According to Babatunde Akinbiyi, spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), the truck driver failed to notice he had collided with the tricycle until it was too late.

‘The impact was so severe that the tricycle was crushed under the truck’s tyre, killing the five passengers on the spot,’ Akinbiyi said.

A rescue team led by the Acting TRACE Head, Adedayo Omonayajo, and the Ilaro Divisional Commander, Salako Idowu, was deployed to the scene. However, tensions escalated as angry residents attempted to attack the team. The situation was brought under control with the intervention of the Amotekun Corps and other security operatives.

The remains of the victims were evacuated and taken to the morgue by officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
