Nigeria’s mining sector is standing at a critical crossroads at one where capital market innovation meets the urgent call for indigenous ownership and sustainability.

At the ongoing Nigeria Mining Week 2025 in Abuja, experts and policymakers agreed that while Nigeria’s legal and regulatory reforms have opened the door for global investment, the next stage of transformation must be locally driven.

Professor Akinade Olatunji, Immediate Past President of the Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society, described Nigeria’s mining framework as ‘world-class’ but cautioned that without homegrown participation, the country risks repeating the mistakes of its oil sector beginnings.

‘Reforms have rekindled interest, both nationally and internationally,’ he said. ‘But transformation won’t come from foreign investment alone. It will come from deliberate policies that create room for Nigerian operators to grow, innovate, and compete.’

Olatunji drew lessons from the oil and gas industry, noting how the 2001 marginal fields initiative birthed indigenous giants such as Seplat, Aradel, and NDWestern.

‘What changed then was deliberate policy action,’ he recalled. ‘It created opportunities for local players, built technical capacity, and ensured that ownership stayed within Nigeria. That same kind of intentionality is what the mining sector now needs.’

He also questioned whether global mining firms currently entering Nigeria were committed to long-term development.

‘We must ask if these investors plan to stay and integrate into our economy-or just extract and leave. True progress means sustainable partnerships that empower Nigerians at every level of the value chain.’

Another participant added that ‘mining should no longer be a one-way street for foreign capital. It must be a launchpad for Nigerian-owned enterprises and professionals.’

Amid these conversations on local participation, a new financing model is emerging to power the shift.

Abdulmajeed Amussah, Technical Adviser to the Executive Secretary of the Solid Minerals Development Fund (SMDF), announced a groundbreaking collaboration between SMDF and NASD Plc to unlock access to capital for credible mining ventures.

In his presentation, ‘SMDF-NASD Collaboration: Accelerating Nigeria’s Mining Sector,’ Amussah said the initiative is designed to convert Nigeria’s $700 billion in untapped mineral resources into real, measurable economic growth.

‘Despite the enormous potential, mining contributes less than one percent to GDP,’ he explained. ‘The biggest barrier has always been limited access to long-term, risk-tolerant capital. That’s the challenge this partnership seeks to solve.’

According to him, NASD Plc will deploy its capital market infrastructure to create regulated digital financing platforms – such as Digital Securities Platforms (DSPs) and Security Token Offerings (STOs) – tailored to the unique lifecycle of mining projects.

‘This innovation ties investment instruments directly to project milestones, ensuring transparency and protecting both investors and operators,’ Amussah said.

He added that the collaboration, supported by Dr. Dele Alake, Minister of Solid Minerals Development, and Prince Shuaibu Abubakar Audu, Minister of Steel Development, aligns with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which focuses on industrialization, local content, and resource-based economic expansion.

‘This could mark the turning point Nigeria’s mining sector has been waiting for,’ Amussah concluded. ‘With structured, transparent capital now entering the space, we are closer to turning our mineral wealth into broad-based national prosperity.’

Indeed, there are still many bad federal roads across the state, but Governor Monday Okpebholo has shown that he is not one to bemoan ownership or pass blame. Instead, heavy-duty trucks are being mobilized to sites across Edo, signaling a government that prefers action to excuses. In less than a year in office, Governor Okpebholo has set a clear direction, one that places infrastructure at the heart of development. The ongoing construction of intercessional bridges across Benin City, especially the new flyover at Adesuwa Junction on Sapele Road, stands as a powerful statement of purpose and capability. For years, residents have endured heavy traffic at key intersections, particularly around Adesuwa Junction, a spot long associated with gridlock and frustration. The decision to construct a modern flyover there is not merely a traffic solution; it is an investment in mobility, productivity, and urban renewal. It shows a government that listens, understands the people’s pain points, and responds with action, not rhetoric.

Writing on the anniversary of a sitting governor could pass for hagiography, especially when written by a publicist from the same political party as the governor. Such writer may be accused of serving a political agenda. Ordinarily, a party publicist should not be bashful at promoting the activities of the Party on the platform of which the governor ascended. But his job is further made easy when the governor is doing so well that positive appraisals flow in naturally from the citizens he, the publicist, should be selling the Party to. It then means that the people have already bought into the product and no point puffing it. Rather, than selling, he should simply say what is happening and known to all, leaving the discerning public to nod their heads in concurrence.

Moreover, these days, I no longer write long, flowing proses. I simply KISS my piece (Keep It Short and Simple). So as not to be guilty of ‘asodun’ (exaggeration). I fear I would be tampering with the people’s patience by wasting words to explain what they already know. Straightly, it is the third anniversary of Ekiti State Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji’s tenure. He is still serving his first term of constitutionally approved two 4-yearly terms. His performance during the first term is his promotion ticket for the second term. If indeed the morning shows the day, the appraisal Oyebanji is getting from the people of the State is an assurance that he has earned his second term.

The dispassionate people of Ekiti State have rated Governor Oyebanji as a high performer. What qualifies him for such rave reviews he has been getting from all and sundry? Here is a thoughtful reflection on the governor’s accomplishments and challenges. And I will not stop there. I will go further to offer insights into what his future plans should be and their potential effects on moving our dear State forward.

Some of the notable achievements of Governor Oyebanji in the past three years are in the following areas:

*Fiscal Responsibility:* Governor Oyebanji has not been any reckless with spending. This is confirmed by the consistent ranking of Ekiti State top in fiscal responsibility, budget transparency and civil service reforms. The governor has also strengthened some functional institutions, among them, I could cite the ultra modern Ministry of Works complex at Ajilosun in Ado Ekiti, the State capital, which stands as a symbol of order and efficiency.

*Economic Growth and Infrastructure*: Oyebanji’s government has prioritized economic growth, investing in infrastructure development, including road construction and renovation. Over 350 kilometers of roads have been covered, with 126 kilometers completed across all 16 local government areas. Add to this the Ekiti Agro-Allied International Cargo Airport project, which has made significant progress in Oyebanji’s time, with the Federal Government granting approval for commercial flight operations effective October 4, 2025. This development is expected to boost the state’s economy, particularly in agribusiness, tourism, commerce, and medical tourism.

*Education and Youth Empowerment*: Oyebanji’s administration has focused on education, rehabilitating over 1,000 classrooms and constructing 30 new ones. The Smart School initiative at some Government Colleges is another notable project. Additionally, the Ekiti Youth Economic Empowerment Programme (E-YEEP) has provided grants, vocational training, and business support to thousands of young entrepreneurs.

*Healthcare and Agriculture*: Oyebanji’s government has revitalized primary healthcare facilities, introduced mobile health initiatives, and improved access to quality care in underserved areas. In agriculture, the administration has supported farmers with inputs, credit, mechanized tools, and guaranteed offtake markets.

*Power and Water Access*: The Ilumoba-Ijesa-Isu to Ikole 33kV line is an example of efforts made at improving electricity supply, while 121 boreholes have been rehabilitated and 110 solar-powered water pumps installed for schools and health centers.

*Food Security*: The Ekiti State Food Security Project, including the Ile-Eye Aggregation Hub and Ounje Ekiti retail outlet, aims to solve post-harvest losses, inadequate storage, hoarding, and exploitation by middlemen.

*Youth Development*: The Bring Back the Youths in Agriculture initiative has provided training and funding for young farmers, while the Ekiti State Agricultural Farm powerhouse focuses on maize and cassava production.

*Security of Lives and Property:* Ekiti State has made significant strides in enhancing security of lives and property, with Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s administration implementing various measures to protect lives and property. The state has been recognized as one of the most peaceful in Nigeria, thanks to the governor’s proactive approach to addressing security challenges.

I pause here, but must state that these are just very few of the achievements that demonstrate Oyebanji’s commitment to Ekiti State’s development and his vision for a prosperous future. To confirm their impactfulness, Governor Biodun Oyebanji of Ekiti State has earned himself accolades and recognitions from various institutions and organisations for his outstanding leadership and development initiatives in the State.

Does this then mean that everything is smooth sailing for the governor and there are no challenges? Perish the thought. There surely are some, though surmountable, challenges, and they include:

*Budget Constraints*: Whatever resources available to the governor will always be thrown at endless needs. Managing limited resources and allocating funds effectively has been a significant challenge and will always be.

*Opposition and Criticism*: Gratuitously, the governor has faced opposition and criticism from various stakeholders and he will continue facing it. This requires effective communication and negotiation skills, which are not lacking.

*Balancing Competing Interests*: Gov Oyebanji must continue to balance competing interests and priorities, ensuring that decisions benefit the greater good of the majority.

The people’s governor must also keep pursuing these as his future goals:

*Sustainable Development*: Oyebanji must not stop aiming at prioritizing sustainable development, focusing on environmental protection and renewable energy.

*Education and Workforce Development*: Investing in education and workforce development initiatives have been his priority so far, but he can do more to equip the people, especially with youthful ones, with skills for emerging industries.

*Citizens Engagement*: Oyebanji has been doing it and cannot stop enhancing community engagement and participation in decision-making processes to foster a sense of ownership and accountability.

No doubt, three years is long enough to be impactful as Oyebanji has proved to the world and Ekiti people, yet it is not enough to achieve the Ekiti of his dream. As one of those who fought for the creation of the State, he cannot say Ekiti has arrived at its Eldorado. If God had used him at such a tender age to influence the State’s creation, he can still be used to further its advancement, whether as a governor or statesman. Ekiti advancement is a journey, not a destination, and it is the concern of all its citizens.

Motorists in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Tuesday, were in jubilation as the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) sold 14,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, from an intercepted tanker at N600 per litre to residents.

The sale took place at Afoo Multi Ventures Limited’s fuel station in the Muslim area of Ibadan, under the supervision of the National Coordinator of Operation Whirlwind, Assistant Comptroller General (ACG) Kola Oladeji.

The discounted sale was part of a public auction of the intercepted petroleum product suspected to be smuggled or diverted.

Tribune Online gathered that the fuel was seized by Customs’ Operation Whirlwind team operatives along the Igbeti/Ogbomoso axis following a credible intelligence tip-off.

Addressing journalists at the filling station where the auction sale was carried out, ACG Oladeji stated that the operation was executed with precision and diligence, leading to the confiscation of a tanker truck with registration number DGB 722 XR.

He estimated the duty-paid value of the seized fuel to be N14 million.

‘This operation is not just about seizing a tanker or the quantity of fuel; it is about safeguarding our economy, ensuring accountability in the downstream sector, and protecting the rights of ordinary Nigerians who continue to suffer the effects of fuel scarcity, hoarding, and price manipulation,’ he said.

He added that under the leadership of Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, Operation Whirlwind remains committed to dismantling networks involved in the illegal diversion and smuggling of petroleum products.

ACG Oladeji also appreciated the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, for its strategic intelligence support.

Residents who benefited from the auction expressed mixed feelings. While many were thankful for the opportunity to purchase fuel at a lower price, compared to the usual N850-N900 per litre, some said that they would not lower their transport fares despite the reduced cost.

One of the beneficiaries, Daniel Paul, a commercial motorcyclist, expressed joy but made it clear that the savings would be for his personal gain. ‘When fuel prices skyrocketed, we didn’t increase transport fares. Now that I bought at a cheaper price, it’s my turn to gain,’ he told reporters.

Another motorist, Mr Sumaila Ariyo, a tricycle operator, lauded the initiative and thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Nigeria Customs Service for bringing some relief to the masses.

‘Before now, we used to buy fuel at N870 to N875. This N600 price is a big help,’ he said.

The manager of the petrol station, who identified himself as Mr Sunkanmi, confirmed that fuel was initially being sold at N900 per litre earlier in the day before the arrival of Customs officers, who adjusted the price to N600 for the auction.

ýRaising the motion under ‘Matter of Urgent Public Importance’ during Tuesday’s plenary sitting, the lawmaker expressed deep concern over the worsening condition of rural infrastructure, particularly after the recent downpour on Sunday, October 5, 2025.

ýAccording to Oyekola, the heavy rainfall caused the collapse of the Alaparun River box culvert along the Sabo-Baale Agbe-Otefon Road, a vital route that connects several farming communities to major markets in Sabo and Ajegunle.

ýHe described the situation as a ‘serious threat to the agro-economic survival’ of the constituency, noting that over 65 percent of Atiba’s residents depend on farming for their livelihood.

ý’Agriculture is not just an occupation here, it is the heartbeat of our economy and a pathway to wealth creation and food sufficiency,’ he said.

ýAccording to him, since the collapse of the culvert, farmers have struggled to move their produce to urban markets. Many are now forced to take long and costly detours through the Iseyin-Ogbomoso axis, resulting in increased transport expenses, delays, and large quantities of perishable goods going to waste.

ýOyekola described the affected road as a ‘food corridor’ that connects three key wards, including the densely populated Ward 10.

ý’This is more than a local road. It’s a lifeline for thousands of farmers. If it remains inaccessible, it will choke the food supply chain, increase hunger, and deepen poverty among our people,’ he warned.

Tension is brewing in Owo local government area of Ondo following the indefinite suspension of the Council Chairman, Hon. Tope Omolayo, over allegations of gross misconduct.

The suspension, announced after a stormy plenary session of the Owo Legislative Council on Wednesday, was part of resolutions passed by a two-thirds majority of the 11 councillors, led by the House Leader, Hon. Doyin Adebayo.

Omolayo was accused of financial improprieties, violation of budgetary and revenue regulations, disrespect to traditional rulers, and failure to uphold due administrative conduct, among other offences.

In a statement signed by the councillors, the legislative arm said the move was aimed at restoring accountability and transparency in the council’s operations.

According to the resolution signed by the two-thirds majority of the councillors, ‘the Owo Local Government Legislative Council, under the House leader, Hon. Doyin Adebayo, has taken decisive action to ensure good governance and accountability in Owo Local Government Area.

‘The allegations against Hon. Omolayo include financial improprieties, utter violation of statutory budget and IGR regulations, disrespect to traditional heads, and failure to conduct himself appropriately. These allegations are serious and require thorough investigation.

‘During the period of suspension, Hon. Hamed Ibrahim, the Vice Chairman, shall act as the Chairman of the Local Government Area Council. The investigation into the allegations shall be conducted in a fair, transparent, and impartial manner.

‘The Council assures the good people of Owo Local Government Area that this suspension is necessary to ensure good governance and accountability.

‘We urge all stakeholders to remain calm and cooperative as we work towards resolving the issues at hand,’ the statement read in part.

The lawmakers also directed the Head of Local Government Administration to effect all necessary changes to bank signatories and ensure that all government properties in Omolayo’s possession are returned.

But Omolayo, in his reaction, dismissed reports of his suspension as false and baseless, insisting that he remains the substantive chairman.

He said, ‘Those are elements of destruction. I didn’t receive any letter from them. We were even in the same programme yesterday’.

He alleged that some of the councillors were unhappy over his refusal to yield to financial demands.

He claimed that the grievances were politically motivated and said ‘they said I should give them 30 percent from project funds and later demanded ?25 million. All they wanted was money, money, money.

‘I am a man of peace. As far as I’m concerned, nothing is happening. I am not impeached or suspended,’ he declared.

However, the development has triggered unease within political circles in Owo, with fears that the suspension may deepen internal crises within the local government’s political structure.

Stakeholders have called for calm as the investigation committee begins its work amid rising tension among supporters of both camps.

The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) on Tuesday, inducted 19 pioneer nursing graduates of the Wellspring University, Benin, Edo State into the profession.

Gorini urged them to learn from their senior colleagues and ensure they minimise the incidents of error, as their patients rely on them for quality treatment.

He said: ‘Nursing is a profession that is tremendously demanding compassionate, kindness and attentiveness while dealing with patients.

‘As graduate nurse, you must be able to perform nursing skills in various healthcare settings, therapeutically assisting individuals, families, communities and diverse backgrounds.

‘In doing this, you must understand the psychosocial and physical factors in alleviation of offering, promotion, maintaining and restoration of health and be able to function independently and collaborate with other healthcare professionals in the course of our practice in any healthcare setting.

In his message to the inductees, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Isaac Ajayi, described the inductees as the trailblazer and the first fruit of the nursing programme at Wellspring University.

He said that nursing is not merely a career, but a calling to serve humanity with compassion, diligence and integrity.

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has called for synergy and cordial relationship between the state government and the Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA) to make ports in Lagos better.

Governor Sanwo-Olu made the call during a courtesy visit by the NPA Board of Directors led by its Chairman, Senator Adedayo Adeyeye, at the Lagos House, Marina.

The governor, while making the call, noted that ports play a vital role in Lagos and Nigeria’s economy, stressing the need for both the state government and NPA to work together to realise the aspirations and promises of President Bola Tinubu to Nigerians.

‘We have significantly solved the Apapa gridlock problem. We have been part of the solution of the Apapa and Tin Can Port’s traffic congestion, knowing that it is in our collective interest to do so because they are national assets that generate revenue for the country.

‘We understand the vital role our ports play in Lagos and Nigeria’s economy because ports are critical assets. I believe we can do better if we work together.

‘We are willing to support. It is in our interest to work with NPA to ensure that all of the aspirations and promises of President Bola Tinubu are realisable. We are committed totally to supporting them,’ the governor stated.

Senator Adeyeye, in his earlier remark, commended Governor Sanwo-Olu’s administration for solving the Apapa traffic gridlock and for maintaining a good relationship with NPA, assuring that the agency was ready to promote a good relationship with Lagos.

Adeyeye expressed delight with what was happening in Lagos, acknowledging the state as the best environment ‘in terms of community and government relations with the Nigeria Ports Authority.’
