Bauchi Police Command has launched an investigation into the alleged killing of a police constable, Ukasha Muhammed (F/No. 533164), by a soldier attached to the Special Task Force (STF), Operation Safe Haven, Jos, Plateau.

The incident reportedly occurred on Friday, October 10, 2025, at Tudun Wadan Dan Iya, popularly known as Bayan Gari, a busy social area in Bauchi metropolis.

Eyewitnesses said the altercation began around 9 p.m. when a police patrol team stopped to conduct routine searches of vehicles and motorcycles in the area. One of the individuals reportedly resisted and obstructed the officers, sparking a brief commotion before leaving the scene.

According to the source, the man – later identified as a soldier – returned about an hour later with two colleagues and allegedly shot Constable Ukasha in the chest. The assailants reportedly attempted to flee but were restrained by bystanders until police reinforcement arrived.

Confirming the incident in a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), CSP Mohammed Ahmed Wakil, said the command received a distress report at about 10:35 p.m., detailing an assault on a patrol team led by Inspector Hussaini Samaila in the Bayan Gari area.

‘The patrol team encountered an assault on one of its members, Constable Ukasha Muhammed, by two individuals in front of Padimo Hotel. The remaining members of the team responded swiftly, resulting in the apprehension of one suspect, while the other escaped the scene,’ the statement read.

Wakil identified the first suspect as Private Usman Mubarak (23NA/84/5346), attached to Operation Safe Haven, Jos.

He added that, around 11:05 p.m., two other soldiers – Private Yakubu Yahuza (23NA/85/10185) and Private Godspower Gabriel (23NA/84/5654) – arrived at the scene armed and partially dressed in military uniforms, before allegedly shooting Constable Ukasha in the chest.

The injured officer was rushed to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), Bauchi, where he was pronounced dead by medical personnel. His remains have been deposited in the hospital morgue.

The statement confirmed that the two soldiers, Yakubu Yahuza and Godspower Gabriel, have been arrested and are in police custody.

The Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, has ordered a comprehensive homicide investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the killing and ensure justice is served.

‘A team of seasoned detectives has been constituted to conduct a professional and thorough investigation to clear all doubts and ensure justice through a meticulous process,’ Wakil added.

The Commissioner also condoled with the family of the deceased officer, praying for the repose of his soul and strength for his loved ones to bear the loss.

Enugu State Governor, Dr Peter Mbah, has inaugurated a 29-member committee to implement the Enugu State Climate Policy and Action Plan (ESCPAP), marking another decisive step in the state’s climate leadership journey.

Inaugurating the committee on Friday at the Government House, Enugu, Mbah said the initiative was in demonstration of the administration’s unwavering commitment to tackling the global climate crisis through local solutions and sustainable development strategies.

According to the governor, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof Chidiebere Onyia, the ESCPAP, which was launched on March 17, 2025, provides a comprehensive framework to promote low-carbon economic growth, cut greenhouse gas emissions, and build resilience against climate impacts.

‘This plan positions Enugu as a leading subnational player in climate governance and sustainability across Africa,’ he said.

The governor explained that the newly inaugurated committee would provide strategic oversight, coordination, and technical guidance for the effective implementation of the policy, adding that ‘The committee will ensure the successful delivery of climate mitigation, adaptation, finance mobilisation, and monitoring in line with state, national, and global climate commitments.’

Outlining its major responsibilities, Mbah said the committee would drive sectoral coordination across all relevant ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs); strengthen climate governance; mobilise climate finance through green bonds, carbon markets, and development partnerships; and monitor progress through an established results-based framework.

‘Under mitigation, the committee will promote renewable energy, energy efficiency, low-carbon transport systems such as electric and CNG vehicles, sustainable waste management, afforestation, and climate-smart agriculture.

‘For adaptation and resilience, the committee will undertake vulnerability assessments, develop local adaptation plans, and implement nature-based solutions for erosion and flood control. It will also promote climate-smart infrastructure, clean cooking technologies, and resilient livelihoods in communities.

‘On governance and inclusion, the committee will mainstream climate actions across state policies, ensuring the integration of gender, youth, and disability considerations. It will also intensify climate education, capacity building, and public awareness programmes,’ he further stressed.

Governor Mbah maintained that that the committee had been mandated to develop a comprehensive Climate Finance Plan, attract domestic and international funding, and publish its annual progress reports for transparency, accountability and evaluation.

While stating that the committee would brief the State Executive Council quarterly and submit an annual progress report to his office, he urged members to demonstrate professionalism, integrity, transparency, and inclusivity, describing the committee as ‘a key mechanism for translating Enugu’s climate vision into tangible action.’

Responding on behalf of the committee, the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change thanked the governor for the trust reposed in them and pledged that the team would work diligently to deliver meaningful, measurable outcomes for the state.

The 29-member team is chaired by the SSG, with the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Prof. Sam Ugwu, and the Commissioner for Finance, Dr. Nathaniel Urama, serving as first and second vice chairmen, while the Senior Policy Adviser to the Governor on Climate Policy and Sustainable Development, Prof Chukwumerije Okereke, serves as secretary.

Other members include representatives of key MDAs-such as Environment, Energy, Agriculture, Transport, Finance, and Health-alongside academics, civil society groups, youth and women representatives, traditional leaders, and climate finance experts.

Additionally, a confidential list containing details of Tinubu’s defense team, obtained by our reporter, confirmed that Prof Amupitan’s name was not included.

The claim that Prof Joash Ojo Amupitan was part of President Tinubu’s 2023 Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT) legal team is FALSE.

Two suspects have been arrested in Kaduna for vandalising the electrical and signalling assets of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), while a third suspect remains at large.

The suspects – Ibrahim Abdullahi (22) of Hayi, Rigasa, and Sani Ibrahim (24) of Layi Turaki, Rigasa – were apprehended by operatives of the Nigeria Police Railway Command attached to the Abuja-Kaduna Train Service (AKTS).

Their arrest followed the discovery, on Friday, October 10, 2025, around 12:30 pm, that a cable wire had been cut and removed from one of NRC’s cranes stationed within the Rigasa facility.

According to the NRC, ‘Two suspects were recently arrested in Kaduna for vandalising our equipment at the Rigasa Train Station area.

Decrying the incessant cases of vandalism of its assets, the NRC, in a statement signed on Saturday by its Chief Public Relations Officer, Callistus Unyimadu, described the trend as a major threat to safe and efficient train operations.

‘The suspects – Ibrahim Abdullahi (22 years old) of Hayi, Rigasa, and Sani Ibrahim (24 years old) of Layi Turaki, Rigasa – were apprehended by operatives of the Nigeria Police, Railway Command attached to the Abuja-Kaduna Train Service (AKTS).

‘The arrest followed the discovery on Friday, 10th October 2025, at about 12:30 pm, that a cable wire had been cut and removed from one of NRC’s cranes stationed within the Rigasa facility.

‘Acting swiftly on intelligence, the patrol team led by ASP Abdullahi Bwajin, Administrative Officer at Rigasa, traced and arrested the suspects.

‘During interrogation, the duo confessed to committing the crime and disclosed that they sold the stolen cable to one Musa, popularly known as ‘Musa Major,’ for ?90,000.

‘Each suspect reportedly received ?30,000 as his share, while another member of their syndicate, Abdulwahab Yakubu of Rigasa, is currently at large.

‘Efforts are ongoing by the Nigeria Police, Railway Command (AKTS) to apprehend the remaining suspect and recover the stolen materials.

‘The NRC commends the Command for its professionalism and swift action, assuring that all culprits involved in acts of vandalism will face the full weight of the law.

‘The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, Dr. Kayode Opeifa, expressed deep concern over the increasing attacks on railway electrical and signalling infrastructure, describing them as Critical National Assets.

‘He stated that henceforth, the Corporation, in collaboration with security agencies, will treat such offences as economic sabotage with severe legal consequences for perpetrators.

‘Dr. Opeifa further appealed to members of the public, particularly residents of communities hosting railway facilities, to support the NRC and security agencies in protecting these assets.

‘He noted that the railway system has always served as a catalyst for community development and improved livelihoods, and safeguarding it remains a collective responsibility.’

FOR hundreds of years, measles has been one of the most contagious and lethal viruses known to humans. It poses a significant risk to individuals, especially children under five years of age who lack vaccination, as their immune systems and organ systems are still developing.

Measles disease, caused by the measles virus, is highly infectious. Despite the availability of a safe and affordable vaccination, measles kills more children than any other vaccine-preventable disease in Nigeria each year.

One person afflicted with measles can spread the virus to up to 18 unprotected others, making it ‘extremely infectious’. The virus is easily spread through respiratory droplets or contact with contaminated surfaces and remains viable for up to two hours.

Dr Foluso Balogun, a consultant paediatrician at University College Hospital, Ibadan, and team leader for the Oyo State Immunization Champions, said measles, like rubella, is a viral disease that can be prevented through vaccination.

She spoke at an advocacy meeting by the Paediatric Association of Nigeria in collaboration with the International Paediatric Association to create awareness of the integrated measles-rubella vaccine among traditional birth attendants.

Nigeria is also introducing a new combined measles-rubella vaccine to replace the measles-only vaccine. It is part of Nigeria’s integrated vaccination campaign, aiming to reach about 109 million children aged 9 months to 14 years with vaccines against measles-rubella (MR), human papillomavirus, which protects against cervical cancer (HPV), polio, and other routine immunisations.

The campaign is being implemented in two phases: phase one covers 20 high-risk northern states and Oyo state in the southwest; phase 2 begins in January 2026 and will be expanded to the remaining southern states.

The initiative responds to persistent outbreaks of circulating variant poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2) as well as measles and rubella outbreaks in Nigeria and across the Lake Chad Basin.

Dr Balogun declared that with two doses of the measles-rubella (MR) vaccine, the first dose at 9 months and the second dose at between 15 and 18 months, one is protected for life against these infections.

‘Once the vaccine is in good condition, it has not expired, it has been given through the right route, it has not been exposed to the wrong temperature or environment, and two doses have been taken, it might confer immunity for life,’ she said.

She said the impression by mothers that a child could repeatedly have measles is wrong if the child has already had a full dose of measles vaccine or a past measles infection.

Dr Balogun declared many times that a skin rash and high body temperature in children are misinterpreted as measles by many mothers.

She stated, ‘The mistake is because of the similarities in some symptoms of measles with some other conditions like rubella, Roseola Infantum, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. All these conditions also cause similar rashes and increased body temperature in children.’

Common early symptoms of measles-fever, cough, runny nose-are similar to other viral infections such as colds or flu. A few days into the illness, painless, tiny white spots in the mouth (called Koplik spots) appear. But they’re easy to miss and are absent in many cases. A day or two later, a distinctive skin rash develops.

However, Dr Balogun said there are subtle differences between measles, rubella and other diseases like Roseola infantum, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever.

The maculopapular rash, in the case of measles, usually starts from the face, spreading to the back of the ear, and then the body. But rashes due to rubella don’t follow that particular pattern.

Rashes due to rubella usually last for three days, and after three days they disappear, and it doesn’t peel. But rashes due to measles last longer than that, and then they peel off. Also, body temperature is higher in measles, unlike in rubella.

Dr Balogun also discouraged practices like applying palm oil mixed with bitter leaf extract on rashes in children as a treatment, saying rashes can be caused by different conditions and necessitate that such children be taken to the hospital for appropriate diagnoses and treatment.

‘I’ve seen cases where they mix up chicken pox and measles. The layman would call everything measles. Not every rash is measles. Measles rash has characteristics, and there’s some history and tests to know whether it’s measles or not.

‘We use calamine lotion in treating measles because the rash is itchy. And it’s to reduce the itching so that the child will be calm. But they are not supposed to use it on their own,’ she added.

Dr Balogun, however, said that with immunization, the spread of measles and rubella in the community can be stemmed once herd immunity is attained.

According to her, ‘This measles-rubella vaccine is safe and effective to protect from the disabilities and mortality that can come from measles and rubella; this vaccine can prevent congenital rubella syndrome so that we will not have such in our midst again.’

The measles vaccine has been in use since the 1960s. It is safe, effective and inexpensive. The best thing is to prevent it from occurring. And any life lost cannot be brought back. So, it’s better for us to make sure we prevent it from occurring.

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has paraded twelve suspects responsible for the death of Ms. Somtochukwu Christella Maduagwu, a journalist with ARISE TV, and Mr. Barnabas Danlami, a security guard, during a robbery operation at Unique Apartments, Katampe Extension, Mabushi, Abuja, on 29th September 2025.

Benjamin Hundeyin, the Force Public Relations Officer, while parading the suspects on Saturday, at the FCT Police Command Headquarters, Garki, in Abuja, said that it was necessary to keep the public accurately informed, on the significant progress recorded in the ongoing investigation.

Hundeyin said, ‘Following the incident, operatives of the FCT Police Command immediately launched a coordinated intelligence-driven investigation. Through diligent efforts and extensive digital intelligence analysis, twelve suspects linked to the robbery have been successfully arrested. They are:

‘Shamsudeen Hassan. Hassan Isah, 22 years. Abubakar AlKamu a.k.a. Abba, 27 years. Sani Sirajo a.k.a. Dan Borume, 20 years. Mashkur Jamilu a.k.a. Abba, 28 years. Suleiman Badamasi a.k.a. Dan-Sule, 21 years. Abdulsalam Saleh a.k.a. Na-Durudu. Zaharadeen Muhammad a.k.a. Gwaska, 23 years. Musa Adamu a.k.a. Musa Hassan, 30 years. Sumayya Mohammed a.k.a. Baby, 27 years. Isah Abdulrahman a.k.a. Abbati, 25 years. Musa Umar a.k.a. Small, 31 years.

‘Exhibits recovered from the suspects include: One locally fabricated AK-47 rifle, one locally made pistol, one pump-action gun, thirty-six live rounds of 9mm ammunition, two live cartridges, four mobile phones, two sharp knives, one cutlass, two flashlights.

‘Investigations revealed that the fatal shot which claimed the life of the security guard, Mr. Barnabas Danlami, was fired by one of the suspects, Shamsudeen Hassan, who stated that he shot the guard when the latter attempted to prevent them from gaining access to the apartment complex. It was further revealed that their firearms were sourced from a yet-to-be-identified supplier in Niger Republic, and that they had taken part in other armed robbery operations within Katampe I, Apo, Zuba, and other parts of the FCT.

‘The Nigeria Police Force extends its deepest condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of Ms. Somtochukwu Christella Maduagwu and Mr. Barnabas Danlami, assuring that justice will be pursued to its logical conclusion.

‘The Force remains resolute in ensuring that all individuals connected to this grievous crime are prosecuted in accordance with the law. We commend the exceptional professionalism, courage, and dedication of the operatives of the FCT Police Command, whose painstaking efforts led to these arrests and recoveries.

‘Members of the public are urged to remain vigilant and continue to support the Police with timely and credible information that will aid in the prevention and detection of crime. In closing, the Nigeria Police Force assures the public that investigations remain ongoing and that more updates will be provided as further facts are uncovered.’

Fuel scarcity has continued to bite harder across Sokoto metropolis despite the suspension of the strike by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), leaving motorists and commuters stranded as most filling stations remain shut.

A check by our correspondent on Saturday revealed that several filling stations within the city were not dispensing fuel, while a few that opened for business sold at highly inflated prices ranging between N960 and N970 per litre.

Even the NNPC retail outlets, which have about seven stations within the metropolis, were not selling the product, worsening the plight of motorists and commuters.

At the black market, the situation was even more dire as petrol was sold at N1,250 per litre, or N6,500 for a four-litre gallon, forcing many car owners to abandon their vehicles and trek long distances or resort to motorcycles and tricycles for mobility.

One of the motorists, Mallam Abba Umar, condemned what he described as ‘wicked and exploitative’ attitude of petrol marketers in the state, accusing them of hoarding the product to create artificial scarcity.

‘Most petrol marketers in Sokoto are very devilish and wicked. They have fuel but refuse to sell it during the day. They only open at night to sell between N960 and N970 per litre. This is unfair. The state government should intervene to save us from this hardship,’ Umar lamented.

Another motorist, Hajia Rukayyat Bello, who was seen queuing at a filling station along Gusau Road, expressed frustration over the endless wait and rising cost of transportation.

‘I have been on this queue since morning, yet there’s no assurance I will get fuel. We are suffering too much. Transport fares have doubled, and everything in the market is going up because of this scarcity,’ she said.

The persistent fuel shortage has left several major roads in Sokoto almost deserted, with commercial drivers reducing operations due to a lack of fuel.

Residents who spoke with our correspondent called on the Sokoto State Government, the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), and other relevant agencies to wade into the crisis and compel marketers to open their stations and sell at the official pump price.
