Asian Games 2026: PH triathlon team opens campaign

Groups to stage Calabarzon-wide rallies on martial law anniversary

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) on Saturday distanced itself from a 59-member Presidential Campaign Council announced by the Obi-Kwankwaso (OK) Movement.

The party described the structure as unauthorised and instructed the public and media to disregard it.

The OK Movement, had on Thursday, constituted a 59-member Presidential Campaign Council to mobilise support for the 2027 presidential bid of NDC flagbearer Peter Obi and his running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso.

The council, which was unveiled in a statement signed by the movement’s National Secretary, Saadatu Sani, had John Ughulu as its Director-General, while Sani was listed among the campaign leadership.

The structure, according to the statement by the leadership of the OK Movement, was expected to operate independently of the campaign council to be constituted by the NDC, the political platform backing Obi’s presidential bid.

The NDC is yet to constitute and formally unveil its 2027 Presidential Campaign Council. The party had indicated that consultations are ongoing and that the structure will be announced after the necessary approvals.

However, in a press statement titled ‘Re: Purported OK Movement PCC Announcement’ and signed by the party’s National Chairman, Senator Cleopas Moses, the NDC said, ‘The leadership of our party, the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, has noted with concern a publication credited to one John Ugulu announcing a Presidential Campaign Council under the guise of ‘OK Movement’.

‘For the avoidance of doubt, the party wishes to state categorically as follows: The party hereby dissociates itself in totality from the said OK Movement PCC announcement.

‘It did not emanate from the party and should be disregarded by the public and the media. Only the party’s leadership can constitute a PCC.’

The party stressed that all its candidates are ‘products of the party and remain subject to the authority and discipline of the party.’

It added that ‘only the party’s leadership can constitute and announce a Presidential Campaign Council (PCC).’

It warned that ‘no member, candidate, or support group should, under any guise, undermine the party or demarket the party.

‘Henceforth, no individual or group is authorized to announce, constitute, or publish any campaign council, structure, or organ in the name of the party without prior approval from the National Working Committee (NWC).’

While appreciating support groups, the NDC cautioned them against acting as ‘alternative party structures or parallel organs of the party.’

‘We expect a stop to unnecessary attacks against the party on whose platform our candidates are running.

‘If there are any differences or grievances, support groups and members are advised to refer such matters to the party through appropriate internal channels for resolution rather than resorting to public attacks,’ the statement said.

Taking a hard line against the OK Movement’s DG, the NDC announced disciplinary action against John Ughulu, citing what it called ‘this act of affront’ and ‘repeated disregard for party authority.’

‘For this act of affront and his excesses during the primary election in Lagos State, and for his repeated disregard for party authority, the party is constrained to enforce disciplinary measures against Mr. Ugulu.

‘He is hereby referred to the appropriate disciplinary organ of the party for necessary action in line with the provisions of the party’s constitution,’ the statement said.

It added that, ‘The party remains focused on its issue-based campaign and is committed to delivering a New Nigeria that is POssible.’

NCPWD Inaugurates Committees For PWDs Reality Talent Show

The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) has inaugurated six sub-committees for the maiden national inclusive reality talent show, PWDs Got Talent Reality TV Show 2026.

The initiative, being organised in partnership with the Discovering Abilities in Disabilities Initiative (DADI), was inaugurated on Thursday in Abuja.

The Executive Secretary of the commission, Ayuba Burki Gufwan, who was represented at the event by the Director of Planning, Research and Statistics, Aliyu Agwai, said the initiative was aimed at changing the narrative around persons with disabilities from sympathy and charity to ability, talent and empowerment.

He said the show, themed ‘Discovering Abilities in Disabilities’, would provide a platform to discover, develop and project persons with disabilities as talents.

According to him, 14 finalists, comprising two contestants from each of the six geopolitical zones and two from the Federal Capital Territory, would live together for 30 days as they compete and learn.

He said the project was backed by a N1 billion Ability Talent Fund, which would support talent development and post-show opportunities for participants.

‘Some time ago, we conceived an idea – to change the narrative from sympathy to ability, from charity to talent and empowerment. That idea has today become PWDs Got Talent Reality TV Show 2026,’ Gufwan said.

The six sub-committees inaugurated are Contact and Mobilization; Proposal and Partnership; Media and Publicity; Branding and Marketing; Logistics, Protocol and Entertainment; and Inclusion and Compliance.

The Contact and Mobilization Committee is expected to mobilise talented persons with disabilities across the 36 states and the FCT through disability organisations, NGOs, associations and community leaders.

The Proposal and Partnership Committee will develop proposals, secure sponsorships and manage relations with government, corporate organisations and development partners, while the Media and Publicity Committee will oversee press engagements and campaigns across television, radio, online and social media platforms.

The Branding and Marketing Committee will handle the show’s brand identity, merchandise and advertising, while the Logistics, Protocol and Entertainment Committee will oversee venues, welfare, security, transportation and event production.

The Inclusion and Compliance Committee will ensure accessibility, including sign language interpretation, audio description and disability-sensitive content.

The founder of DADI and initiator of the show, Steve Rodstick Ezeh, said persons with disabilities possessed talents that could contribute to the creative industry.

He said the reality show would promote self-reliance and help advance the implementation of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, 2018.

Low Naga River level pushes Peñafrancia fluvial procession after dark

The Peñafrancia Fluvial Procession will be held Saturday night (Sept. 19) instead of its usual late-afternoon schedule as organizers wait for the Naga River to rise enough to safely carry the Pagoda bearing the images of Our Lady of Peñafrancia and El Divino Rostro.

It will be the first time the annual religious procession will be held after dark.

Fr. Francis Tordilla, director of the Cáceres Commission on Communications, said holding the procession at the usual 5 p.m. schedule could cause the Pagoda and accompanying boats to run aground because of the shallow river.

The revised program begins with a Pontifical Mass at the Naga Metropolitan Cathedral from 3:30 to 5 p.m., followed by the foot procession of the images at 6:30 p.m.

The images are expected to reach Danlugan, near the Tabuco Bridge, at about 8:30 p.m. and be loaded onto the Pagoda at 9 p.m.

2 ex-drug convicts, pal allegedly yield P592,000 worth of shabu in Lucena

Police arrested three suspected drug traders-two of whom have previous drug cases-in separate buy-bust operations in this city on Thursday, Sept. 17.

Cops also seized more than P592,000 worth of suspected ‘shabu’ (crystal meth), authorities said.

Lucena City police chief Lt. Col. Ryan Hernandez said in a report that operatives from the Drug Enforcement Unit arrested a 34-year-old suspected street-level drug pusher and his cohort.

The two allegedly sold P500 worth of suspected shabu to a police poseur-buyer in Barangay Ibabang Iyam at around 8 a.m.

Police said the two suspects were found in possession of five heat-sealed sachets containing suspected shabu with an estimated street value of P473,280.

According to police, the 34-year-old suspect had previously been charged in a drug case in 2019 and was released in 2024.

Later, at 5:45 p.m., police operatives conducted another buy-bust operation in Barangay Ilayang Iyam, resulting in the arrest of a 47-year-old suspected street drug pusher.

The suspect allegedly yielded four heat-sealed sachets containing suspected shabu valued at P119,544.

Police said the suspect had a previous drug case filed in 2013 and was released through plea bargaining in 2018.

The arrested suspects were taken into police custody and are set to face charges for violation of Republic Act No. 9165, or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.

The total estimated value of the suspected shabu seized in the two operations was P592,824.

ANTIGUA-EDUCATION-OAS to support Antigua and Barbuda in strengthening democratic participation in schools

The Organisation of American States (OAS) will collaborate with the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology of Antigua and Barbuda to strengthen democratic participation, responsible citizenship and youth engagement within the country’s education system.

The OAS said the initiative was launched this week during its first consultation mission to Antigua and Barbuda, marking the beginning of the project.

The September 15-16 mission was led by OAS Education Specialist Cecilia Martins and brought together curriculum development experts, policymakers, education professionals, students and other stakeholders.

Minister of Education, Science and Technology Daryll Matthew said the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to creating learning environments where students develop the knowledge, skills and values needed for active and informed citizenship.

The technical assistance is being coordinated by the OAS Department of Human Development, Education and Employment (DHDEE), under the Directorate of Education and Culture of the OAS Executive Secretariat for Integral Development, through the Democratic Education and Citizenship Programme (DEMEP).

The OAS said DEMEP brings together 29 member states and promotes implementation of Article 16 of the Inter-American Democratic Charter, which recognises education as an important means of strengthening democratic institutions, developing human potential and alleviating poverty.

The initiative, funded by the United States, will support a review of existing policies, curricula and initiatives and help identify priorities for future training and tool development.

The OAS said the experience will also contribute to the exchange of best practices through the Inter-American Committee on Education and related follow-up mechanisms.
