Rivers were again glorious in the Senior Female cadre, winning the gold medal while University of Lagos won Silver and Osun State clinched the bronze.

In the Senior Male Category, Rivers won gold, Sky Star Club won silver and Comprehensive Club clinched the bronze medal.

President of the NTF, Popoola, said she was elated about the overall standard of the competition.

Tinubu warns against police capture by political interests ahead of 2027

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has warned that the Nigeria Police Force must not become an instrument of any political interest as Nigeria heads into the 2027 general election, insisting the force belongs to the nation, not to any political actor.

He gave the charge at the sixth annual Conference and Retreat for Senior Police Officers (CARSPO) in Owerri, themed: ‘Developing a Nigeria Police roadmap for effective management of election security.’

Representing the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, Tinubu said police impartiality was fundamental to public trust and the credibility of Nigeria’s democracy.

‘The police must be seen not as an instrument of any political interest, but as a national institution serving the Nigerian people and protecting the constitutional order,’ Tinubu said.

He said every Nigerian, regardless of political affiliation, ethnicity, religion, social status or geographical location, must feel protected by the police, and charged the force to maintain the highest standards of professionalism and impartiality in its electoral duties.

He promised full support for the Police ahead of the general election, saying the Federal Government would continue to support measures to enhance the force’s operational capacity, professionalism, welfare and institutional effectiveness.

According to the President, next year’s election demanded intelligence-led operations and close coordination among security and electoral stakeholders.

‘The Federal Government expects the Nigeria Police Force to maintain the highest standards of professionalism and impartiality in the discharge of its electoral responsibilities,’ Tinubu said.

He commended Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, for efforts to reposition the force, while acknowledging the sacrifices of officers battling kidnapping, banditry, terrorism, cultism and armed robbery across the country.

Also speaking at the event, Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, explained that his administration’s decision to host the retreat for a third time and to continue committing state resources to security, despite policing being constitutionally a federal responsibility, was shaped by the trauma of April 5, 2021, when armed men attacked the Imo State Police Command Headquarters and the Owerri Custodial Centre, forcibly releasing 1,844 inmates.

‘Security ceases to be an abstract subject the moment fear begins to alter the ordinary rhythm of life, and the institutions expected to protect society are themselves under attack,’ Uzodimma said, adding that his administration could not treat insecurity as ‘somebody else’s assignment.’

He said prolonged insecurity carries a high economic cost, shrinking economic activity, driving businesses to shut down and pushing residents to relocate, which is why his administration has tied its security spending to its wider development agenda.

In his welcome address, IGP Disu unveiled a six-point agenda to guide police deployment for Nigeria’s 2027 general election, covering early intelligence gathering, rigorous training, joint command with sister agencies, rapid communication, partnership with the public and strict political neutrality.

Under the roadmap, the IGP directed that flashpoints and criminal networks be mapped immediately, with credible intelligence reaching commands in time for action. He warned that ‘a polling unit where these citizens feel unsafe is a polling unit where the election has already failed,’ referring to women, the elderly and persons with disabilities.

Officers would be trained in crowd management, the protection of electoral materials and personnel, and human-rights-compliant policing, while joint exercises with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other agencies would establish clear lines of command before incidents occur.

Disu also raised concerns about election disinformation, directing that fake results, forged police statements and inflammatory videos be monitored and countered swiftly, with those who incite violence online facing prosecution.

Citing lessons from the recent Osun State governorship election, which he described as largely peaceful despite isolated cases of voter intimidation and inducement, Disu ordered a review of the Force’s intelligence, response times and training gaps.

He warned that any officer who takes sides, harasses voters or colludes with political actors during the elections would be investigated and punished, and directed all Commissioners of Police to publish official contact numbers for public access.

Disu tasked the retreat with producing a practical framework for training, deployment and command structure, insisting it must not become ‘another document on a shelf,’ and set a deadline of October 12 for a finished roadmap and an election-security taskforce.

He closed his address with a call-and-response charge to officers, urging them to be ‘Neutral. Prepared. Present. Accountable’ as they return to their commands.

On the Force’s operational scorecard, Disu said police have arrested 1,643 suspects and rescued 1,066 kidnap victims since his assumption of office in February, giving a breakdown of the eight-month tally: 251 terrorists and suspected bandits, 343 murder suspects, 566 armed robbery suspects and 483 suspected cultists arrested, alongside the recovery of 947 firearms and more than 22,000 rounds of ammunition.

He acknowledged the figures offered little comfort to Nigerians still living under the threat of kidnapping, banditry, terrorism and communal violence. ‘Numbers do not console a grieving family. We will not slow down on these threats because an election is coming. We will fight them and secure the elections at the same time,’ he said.

The IG paid tribute to officers who died in the line of duty and pledged improved welfare for their families and serving personnel, noting the retreat coincided with the International Day of Peace, marked globally under the theme ‘Invest in Peace -For Everyone, Everywhere, Every Day.’

The opening ceremony at the Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu International Convention Centre, Owerri, was attended by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), representing President Bola Tinubu; Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma; a representative of the Senate President; military and security chiefs; and captains of industry.

Organised annually by Lenders Consult in collaboration with the Force Headquarters and other sponsors, CARSPO provides a platform for police management and security stakeholders to chart a way forward for effective and accountable policing. Disu thanked Uzodimma for hosting the sixth edition of the retreat, commended Lenders Consult Nigeria Limited for its support, and praised Tinubu for backing the Force with improved welfare, equipment, recruitment and funding.

In their goodwill messages, former Inspectors General of Police (IGPs) Mike Okiro (rtd) and Usman Alkali Baba (rtd), along with the Police Service Commission (PSC), tasked the force with developing a standing roadmap covering issues ranging from criminal sponsorship of banditry to artificial intelligence- generated disinformation ahead of the general election.

Okiro said the country’ s security architecture was under severe strain, adding that unresolved allegations linking political, military, traditional and business interests to the funding of banditry and kidnapping had eroded public trust and complicated intelligence gathering.

He urged the retreat to confront the issue candidly, proposing that any roadmap should rest on three pillars: inter- agency synergy under a unified, police- led command structure involving the Army, the Department of State Services and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.

He warned that police officers must resist political inducement, and that welfare and accountability for deployed personnel must take priority.

He called for closer international intelligence- sharing with INTERPOL and foreign counterparts to counter cross- border arms flows and offshore disinformation campaigns, and warned officers to prepare for fake news, AI- generated deepfakes, drone use by non- state actors, attacks on INEC facilities and attempts to kidnap candidates. He urged clear procedures for arrest, evidence preservation and prompt prosecution of electoral offenders.

Baba drew on his experience overseeing the 2023 general elections, which involved more than 176, 176,000 polling units and 93 million registered voters, and described it as one of the most complex security operations in recent history.

He attributed that outcome to planning, partnership through the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security, and professionalism.

The retired police chief said the approach reduced ballot-box snatching and disruption compared with earlier elections, though attacks on INEC facilities, isolated violence, and misinformation persisted.

Baba called for a standing roadmap that institutionalises lessons from the 2019 and 2023 general elections and off-cycle polls in Kogi, Imo, Edo, Ondo, and Osun states, and that embraces intelligence-led, data-driven deployment.

He identified vote-buying, drone use, and AI-generated fake news as emerging threats, and named disinformation on WhatsApp, hacking of INEC and party databases, and election-themed financial scams as the main cybercrime risks. He said the police would work with INEC, telecommunications operators, and social media platforms, including Facebook, WhatsApp, and TikTok, to take down false content, and called for the protection of women, persons with disabilities, youths, and ad hoc INEC staff.

Representing the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, Commissioner (PSC) Hashim Agungun (rtd) and DIG Taiwo Lakanu (rtd) commended Disu for reforms, including intelligence-led and technology-driven policing, strengthened internal accountability, community engagement, and the establishment of a Violent Crime Response Unit. He said the force had prioritised officer welfare through housing, healthcare, and prompt payment of insurance benefits, in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, and had intensified training on the Electoral Act and rules of engagement for officers on election duty.

Lakanu cited the recent Osun State governorship election as an example of the force’s improved planning, including the strategic deployment of senior officers to protect voters, INEC personnel and electoral materials. He said the commission, which is constitutionally responsible for the recruitment, promotion and discipline of police personnel other than the Inspector-General, remained committed to supporting the force’s professionalism and public accountability.

Speakers urged that the retreat’s outcome translate into a practical, costed and time-bound roadmap owned by police commands, rather than end as a ‘talk shop,’ ahead of the 2027 polls.

Lasaco Assurance pays N18.58bn claims in 2025

The development was disclosed in the company’s 2025 financial report presented by its Chairman, Mr. Babatunde Dabiri, at the 46th Annual General Meeting (AGM), held virtually at its head office on recently.

The increase in claims payments came against the backdrop of growth in the company’s insurance revenue, which rose to N30.86 billion in 2025, compared with N22.82 billion recorded in the previous year.

Lasaco Assurance also strengthened its financial position during the year under review, with total assets increasing by about 25.5 per cent, from N31.26 billion in 2024 to N39.24 billion in 2025.

Similarly, shareholders’ funds rose by approximately 66 per cent, from N12.26 billion to N20.36 billion during the period.

Total liabilities declined marginally from N19 billion in 2024 to N18.88 billion in 2025.

Speaking on the company’s recapitalisation journey, Dabiri disclosed that, subsequent to the 2025 financial year-end, Lasaco Assurance successfully concluded a strategic rights issue.

He said the strong investor participation demonstrated confidence in the company’s corporate strategy, governance structure, management execution and long-term prospects.

According to him, the additional capital significantly strengthened the company’s shareholders’ funds and enabled Lasaco Assurance to exceed the new National Insurance Industry Reform Act (NIIRA) 2025 capital thresholds ahead of the regulatory compliance timeline.

Dabiri said the company viewed the new capital requirements not merely as a regulatory obligation but as a strategic catalyst for long-term value creation.

He noted that Lasaco Assurance successfully met the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) minimum capital requirements ahead of the July 31 deadline and was subsequently approved as one of the recapitalised insurance companies authorised to continue operating in Nigeria.

The Chairman described the successful capital-raising exercise as a landmark achievement, noting that Lasaco Assurance secured N19.3 billion, exceeding its initial target of N18.47 billion by approximately 4.5 per cent.

He said the recapitalisation had further strengthened the company’s capacity to pursue its strategic objectives and compete more effectively in Nigeria’s evolving insurance market.

The Chairman expressed Lasaco Assurance’s growing financial commitments to policyholders as the company seeks to deepen its market position and respond effectively to changing risks and regulatory requirements.

The Managing Director of Lasaco Assurance Plc, Ademoye Shobo, highlighted technology, innovation and strategic partnerships as key drivers for increasing insurance participation in Nigeria.

He noted that the company secured approval from the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) for products in the previous year, with additional products currently in the pipeline.

Shobo also emphasised the company’s commitment to strict capital monitoring in line with NAICOM’s recapitalisation framework, noting that maintaining adequate capital remains critical to sustaining the company’s operations and growth.

Stakeholders condemn attack on ADC members in Kogi

Stakeholders in Kogi East Senatorial District have strongly condemned the violent disruption of an African Democratic Congress (ADC) ward meeting in Ejule-Alla, Ofu Local Government Area, which left several party members injured.

Suspected loyalists of a rival political party invaded the gathering last Tuesday at the residence of the Ejule-Alla Ward Chairman of the ADC.

In the ensuing chaos, political thugs reportedly opened fire and inflicted injuries on several party members, bringing the meeting to an abrupt end as attendees fled for their lives.

The attack has created heightened tension in Ejule-Alla and neighboring communities.

Reacting to the incident, stakeholders across the region-including political leaders and community associations-condemned the assault and urged political actors to embrace peace and tolerance.

The State Chairman of the ADC, Tom Zakari, described the incident as a ‘barbaric and unprovoked attack.’

‘This attack is not only an assault on the ADC, but an assault on democracy, freedom of association, and the peace-loving people of Kogi State,’ Zakari said.

He called on the Nigeria Police Force and the Director of the Department of State Services (DSS) to urgently investigate the incident, identify the perpetrators, and bring their sponsors to justice.

Zakari also urged the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) and security agencies to pay close attention to what he termed ‘growing intimidation against opposition parties in Kogi East.’

Similarly, Admiral Usman Jibrin (rtd), former Accord Party governorship candidate in Kogi State, appealed to politicians and citizens to uphold peace and love as the 2027 general elections approach.

Condemning the use of violence in political activities, Jibrin warned against allowing political competition to escalate into bloodshed.

‘We call on security agencies to thoroughly investigate the Ejule incident, fish out those responsible, and ensure that anyone found culpable faces the full wrath of the law,’ Jibrin stated.

Also reacting, the President of the Ejule Forum, Dr. Farouk Achimugu, called on all political parties to restrain their supporters from actions that threaten communal peace and unity.

‘We wish to reiterate that an election is not war. In Ejule, we are all related by blood, and we shall remain brothers and sisters even after elections. No political ambition is worth the blood of our people,’ Achimugu said. ‘We therefore urge all politicians and political actors to refrain from actions and utterances inimical to peaceful coexistence.’

Efforts to obtain an official reaction from the Kogi State Police Command were unsuccessful. Although the command initially promised to gather details and respond, it had not issued an official statement as of press time.

Commuters Stranded As Residents Protest Renewed Attacks in Niger

Residents of farming communities in Borgu and Agwara Local Government Areas of Niger State blocked the Mokwa-New Bussa road on Monday to protest persistent attacks on their communities by terrorists.

The protest was led by the Borgu Youth Federation, with members of several associations in Borgu Kingdom, including members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), participating.

Daily Trust gathered that the protesters blocked the road at the Bussa roundabout, an entry point to the Borgu Kingdom, as early as 5:30am, despite the rain.

Commuters travelling to New Bussa and Agwara from the Mokwa axis were reportedly stranded.

Speaking with Daily Trust on the telephone, Aliyu Abdulmajeed, the Auditor of the Borgu Youth Federation, said the protest was triggered by an alleged comment by the Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, that only 30 people were kidnapped during the attacks on Jummaat Mosques in Dekara and three other communities.

He said while the five hundred worshippers had remained in Captivity for the past three weeks, attacks had continued, with many communities being deserted.

‘Two LGAs are participating in this protest, Borgu and Agwara LGAs. We are not happy with the the ongoing security challenges in these two LGAs. We have been in this problem for the past three years. Because government has failed to take action, attacks by terrorists have degeneted to tribal clashes and government is watching people dying on a daily basis.

‘You recall the attacks on Dekara and other villages, where about 500 people were kidnapped. These people are still in Captivity. Last week, 30 of these people were slaughtered and beheaded and relatives were asked to go and pick the bodies. The dead bodies were evacuated from where they were dumped and buried. We have raised our concerns before appropriate authorities several times, including the LG chairman.

‘Yesterday, we heard the governor saying that only 30 people were kidnapped. The governor does not get the right information of happenings in our communities. Who informed the governor that only 30 people were kidnapped?’ he said.

Asked if the the bodies of the 30 people reportedly slaughtered had been buried, Abdulmajeed said ‘They have been buried. Some people are misleading the governor. Some families could not even identify the bodies of their loved ones because the heads were taken away. Some bodies were identified from their physiques.’

He said insecurity that had degeneted to tribal clashes between farmers and herders in Agwara LGA had claimed 8 lives last two weeks and hundreds displaced.

The Auditor added that an attack on Guchana community in Borgu LGA on Saturday and Sunday left 30 vigilantes injured.

‘These vigilantes cannot even access modern healthcare facility for treatment. They are currently at various traditional medicine healers for treatment. There is no government presence in that area. Even hospital is not available in that area.

‘We are demanding the government to address our challenges. We have been neglected. There is no government presence here. Why have attacks continued and government keeping deaf ears to our pleas?’ he inquired.

The Chairman of Borgu LGA in Niger State, Mohammed Nasir Abdullahi, told our Correspondent last week via telephone that adequate security personnel had been deployed to the local government area to forestall further terrorist attacks on local communities.

He said the deployment followed an appeal to the Federal Government by the Niger State government after terrorists attacked Jumaat mosques in Dekara, Gbezhin, Sabon-Gida, and Kpenya on August 21, 2026, abducting an unspecified number of worshippers.

The attackers later killed about 30 of the abductees.

The council chairman noted that no new incidents had been recorded since the August mosque attacks, dismissing a recently circulated video as fake.

‘The video in circulation is fake. Nothing like that has happened in Borgu LGA. We have made our findings and there is no security report to that effect. Even our traditional rulers who are the custodians of the affected areas have denied such happening.

‘After the last attack on Jumaat Mosques on August 21, the President, through the efforts of Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, ordered deployment of massive security personnel along that corridor. Government has taken serious measures.

‘There is presence of adequate Security personnel in those corridors and most of the routes we know they use have been blocked,’ he said.

Which Gift Cards Get the Best Rates in Nigeria Right Now?

If you have ever tried to sell a gift card in Nigeria, you already know that not all cards are treated equally. Some brands attract top rates almost instantly, while others sit lower on the list no matter how you present them. Here is what actually decides the rate you get, and which cards are currently worth the most.

What Effects the Gift Card Rates in Nigeria?

Gift card rates in Nigeria are not fixed. They move based on a handful of factors that any regular trader learns to watch closely, and knowing them puts you in a better position before you trade.

1. Brand demand plays the biggest role. Cards from globally recognized brands like Amazon, Apple, and Steam tend to hold stronger value because buyers trust them and can redeem them easily. Lesser known brands often pull lower rates simply because fewer buyers want them, and platforms have to price around that reduced demand.

2. Card type matters just as much. Physical cards and e-codes are not priced the same way:

? Physical cards typically attract higher rates, since buyers see them as easier to authenticate and lower risk.

? E-codes can trade faster since there is no card to inspect, but they often settle for slightly lower rates than physical cards.

? Cards with visible scratch panels or tampering signs almost always get rejected or heavily discounted, physical or not.

3. Receipt availability can also swing your rate. Cards purchased with a receipt are easier to verify as legitimate, which reduces risk for the buyer. This lower risk often translates into a better price for you, especially on higher value cards where buyers want extra assurance before paying out.

4. Currency and card origin count too. A US-issued card and a UK-issued card from the same brand rarely trade at the same rate in Nigeria. Regional pricing differences, redemption restrictions, and local demand all play into how a platform values each version of a card.

5. Timing plays a quiet but real role as well. Rates can shift based on how much supply of a particular card is circulating at any given moment. If a lot of traders are offloading the same brand at once, prices for that card may dip slightly until demand catches up.

6. Finally, the platform you choose to trade on affects your final rate. Some platforms mark down prices heavily to cover their own margins, while others keep pricing closer to the real market value and pass more of that value back to you.

Best Gift Cards With High Rates to Sell in Nigeria

Not every gift card performs the same in Nigeria’s trading market. A few brands consistently attract stronger offers because of steady demand and easy verification.

1. Amazon gift cards. One of the most traded and highest rated cards, especially US Amazon cards with receipts. Their wide use for online shopping keeps the demand high, and buyers rarely hesitate to pay a premium for them.

2. Apple and iTunes gift cards. These also perform well, particularly US-issued cards. Because Apple’s ecosystem is so widely used across phones, laptops, and app purchases, these cards move quickly and often at solid rates.

3. Steam gift cards. Strong rates here too, driven by Nigeria’s large gaming community and steady demand for game credits. Traders who deal specifically in gaming cards often see Steam move faster than most other brands.

4. Google Play gift cards. Reliable earners, especially for traders who deal in smaller denominations that app and game buyers frequently request. Their flexibility across thousands of apps keeps them consistently in demand.

5. Walmart and Sephora gift cards. These can also fetch good rates, though they tend to fluctuate more depending on current buyer demand at the time of trade. Sephora, in particular, can spike around gift-giving seasons.

Rates on all of these cards shift regularly, so what earns a strong price this week may look different next month. The brands above are simply the ones that tend to hold their value best over time, but checking current rates before every trade is still the safest habit to build.

How to Convert Gift Cards to Cash at the Best Rate in Nigeria?

Getting a good rate when you convert gift cards to cash is not about luck. A few simple habits can make a real difference to what lands in your account.

? Check current rates before you trade: Rates change often, sometimes within the same day, so confirming today’s price instead of relying on what you remember from last week helps you avoid underselling your card.

? Choose a platform with transparent pricing: The best gift card trading app shows you the rate upfront before you commit, so there are no surprises once your card has already been submitted. This matters more than most traders realize, since some platforms only reveal their real offer after your card details are already in their hands.

? Keep your card details accurate: Small errors in the code or balance can delay your trade or lower the offer you receive, so double check everything before submitting. A mismatched balance is one of the most common reasons trades get held up or rejected outright.

? Trade during active hours: Some platforms process faster during business hours, which can mean quicker payouts if timing matters to you.

? Avoid scam buyers at all costs: Informal trading groups and unverified buyers may offer rates that look attractive but often come with the risk of non-payment or unfair last-minute deductions. Sticking to a verified platform protects both your card and your money, even if the headline rate looks slightly lower at first glance.

Getting this right does not take much effort once it becomes a habit. Check the rate, confirm your details, pick a platform you trust, and the whole process moves quickly and pays fairly every time.

Why Platform Choice Matters When You Sell Gift Cards in Nigeria

The platform you use to sell gift cards in Nigeria can affect your rate just as much as the brand or card type you are trading.

Some platforms operate with vague pricing that only becomes clear after you have already submitted your card. Others show you the rate before you commit, so you always know what to expect. This kind of transparency matters because it removes the guesswork from trading and helps you plan around a rate you can actually rely on, rather than hoping the final offer matches what you saw advertised.

Speed is another factor worth considering. A platform that takes days to confirm and pay out ties up your funds unnecessarily. Faster processing means you get access to your cash sooner, which matters if you are trading to cover an urgent need or simply do not want your money sitting in limbo.

Vendor verification adds another layer of protection. Platforms that screen who they work with reduce the chances of disputes, delayed payments, or cards being flagged after the fact. It is a smaller detail than rate or speed, but it still shapes how smoothly a trade goes from start to finish.

Customer support also plays a bigger role than most traders expect. If a trade runs into an issue, a platform with responsive support can resolve it within minutes, while one without proper support can leave you waiting days for an answer that affects your money.

When you convert gift cards to cash regularly, these details add up. A platform that combines clear rates, quick payouts, and verified processes consistently gives traders a better overall experience than one that only gets part of the process right.

PoS operator’s deal with bandit leader

A Point of Sale (PoS) operator and motorcycle spare parts dealer in Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State, Isiyaku Nasiru, has been taken into custody for allegedly assisting a bandit kingpin, Kachalla Muhammadu, in processing cash transactions running into millions of naira.

Nasiru was arrested by the Katsina State Security Watch Corps alongside three others: Abubakar Sayaya, Nura Baka Sati and Ubale Mai Cange.

Daily Trust gathered that the suspects were picked up at different locations in the state between Thursday and Saturday.

The council chairman, Shamsuddeen Muhammad Sayaya, who confirmed the arrests to Daily Trust, said the suspects were linked to the network of the notorious bandit kingpin.

He said the suspects were being investigated, stressing that the arrests could provide security agencies with information capable of exposing the structures allegedly sustaining criminal activities in the area.

Nasiru was allegedly used as part of a financial chain through which money linked to Muhammadu was moved to people involved in procuring weapons and other supplies.

Matazu has endured a cycle of killings, abductions, displacement and economic devastation that has transformed once-thriving farming communities into settlements struggling to survive.

The area, once known for its agricultural activities, livestock production, commerce and vibrant communities, has witnessed the gradual abandonment of villages as residents flee attacks and farmers stay away from their fields for fear of being killed or abducted.

Residents told Daily Trust that hundreds of people have been killed or injured over the years, while thousands have been displaced. More than 15 communities have reportedly been deserted or severely affected by the violence, with the crisis spilling into neighbouring local government areas, including Musawa, Kankia, Dutsinma and Kusada.

The abduction of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, a former Director of Defence Information, brought the severity of the insecurity around Matazu into sharp national focus.

The retired general and his wife, Amina Abubakar, were travelling through the Matazu axis on May 30, 2026, when suspected bandits intercepted their vehicle along the Marabar Musawa-Kafinsoli Road.

Police and security sources confirmed at the time that gunmen opened fire on the vehicle before abducting the couple. Their driver reportedly sustained gunshot injuries but escaped.

The incident took a tragic turn when the Katsina State Government confirmed that General Abubakar had died in captivity. His wife was later rescued.

From Islamic student to PoS operator

Nasiru, according to information gathered by Daily Trust, is originally from Mashi Local Government Area. He reportedly came to Matazu to pursue Islamic education before eventually settling in the area with his wife and mother and later set up spare parts and PoS business.

A Matazu resident, Babangida Musa, told our correspondent that Nasiru had left the Islamic school years before the death of his teacher and subsequently ventured into the sale of motorcycle spare parts and PoS service.

‘Isiyaku (Nasiru) left the Islamic school long before his Islamic teacher died. He had already gone into business, selling motorcycle spare parts and operating POS services,’ Musa said, adding that Nasiru’s exit from the school and subsequent involvement in business were known within the community.

According to an interrogation account seen by Daily Trust, Nasiru allegedly received money in cash from Muhammadu through a person identified as Salmanu.

The money was reportedly transferred to one Musa Sani, who allegedly routed it to a gunrunner for the procurement of weapons and other supplies.

Nasiru reportedly appeared in an interrogation recording in which he said the information he provided was voluntary and not obtained under duress. He also reportedly expressed regret over his alleged involvement.

Reports claimed that SaImanu delivered an average of N3 to N5 million cash to Nasiru on a daily basis, which he used to run PoS transactions by giving out cash to local traders and residents who made transfers to his account.

It was alleged that Nasiru would then take his commission and transfer the remaining funds to a bank account belonging to Sani, who then used the money to buy guns, ammunition and motorcycles for Muhammadu.

Sources told Daily Trust that Abubakar, who hails from Sayaya, allegedly confessed he was sent to collect ammunition from Ubale.

He reportedly identified a man identified as Lawal, also known as Yaya, a senior bandit commander working with Muhammad, as the person who allegedly sent him.

Ubale, according to the sources, allegedly confirmed that he handed ammunition to Abubakar on two occasions. He reportedly identified a person named Mustapha as his alleged source.

The accounts point to a possible chain involving several individuals between the source of ammunition and the people allegedly collecting and transporting it.

Another suspect identified in connection with the investigation is Sati, also from Sayaya village, allegedly relocated to Marabar Musawa in Musawa Local Government Area following the attack that left seven people dead in Sayaya community some months ago.

Sati allegedly collected cattle from the bandit leader, sold them on his behalf and performed other errands. He was also allegedly involved in providing food and other logistical support.

Arrest of Nasiru, others shocking – Residents

Residents expressed shock over the arrests because some of the suspects were known to them as businessmen and community members who, until their arrest, were not publicly associated with criminal activities.

A resident of Matazu town, who identified himself simply as Imrana, said Nasiru’s arrest was particularly surprising to many who knew him as a peaceful and trusted person.

Imrana said Nasiru had operated a flourishing business in the community, adding that residents had no knowledge of his alleged connection with banditry until his arrest.

He said the development had forced many residents to reconsider what they knew about individuals within their communities, particularly those whose businesses and social activities appeared legitimate.

Imrana alleged that Nasiru was involved in collecting money on behalf of Kachallah Muhammadu, claiming that the sums involved ranged from N1 million to N5 million almost on a daily basis.

According to him, the money was allegedly collected and subsequently transferred to a suspected gun runner, who allegedly used the proceeds to supply weapons and ammunition to the bandit kingpin.

He said the investigation should trace the alleged flow of money, establish the identities of those who received or transferred the funds and determine whether other people were involved in the alleged arrangement.

‘We need to know the extent of their involvement and whether there are other people behind the activities. The investigation should go beyond these four suspects,’ he said.

A community leader, Goma, said the arrests had generated widespread confusion among residents, particularly because of the alleged contradiction between the public image of some of the suspects and the allegations against them.

Goma said many residents found it difficult to understand how somebody could allegedly support bandits and at the same time remain within the community, interact with residents and even participate in mourning or sympathising with victims of attacks.

‘People are asking how somebody can allegedly be involved in such activities and still be among those mourning the victims whenever there is an attack,’ he said.

Goma said the situation should encourage residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to security agencies rather than assuming that people were incapable of involvement simply because they were known members of the community.

Another community leader, Rabi’u Muhammad, said residents were interested in seeing whether the investigation would uncover additional individuals allegedly involved in financing, facilitating or supplying materials to the bandit network.

He urged the security authorities to ensure that the investigation was comprehensive enough to expose the structure behind the alleged criminal activities.

Kachalla Muhammadu’s enclaves

The name of Kachalla Muhammadu has repeatedly featured in bandit attacks on Matazu and surrounding communities.

Security operations have increasingly focused on forest locations allegedly used as hideouts by criminal groups.

During a clearance operation under Operation FANSAN YAMMA, troops reportedly targeted enclaves around Maharba and Karaduwa in Matazu.

The military said one of the enclaves was linked to Kachalla Muhammadu. Items reportedly recovered during the operation included an RPG-7 tube, a motorcycle, mobile phones and other materials.

Days later, troops reportedly killed a suspected bandit identified by the Army as ‘Smally,’ described as a lieutenant to Muhammadu.

Weapons, ammunition and motorcycles were also reportedly recovered during the operation.

Between September 14 and 16, troops reportedly neutralised two suspected terrorists along the Sayaya-Karaduwa road, recovering ammunition, a motorcycle and other items.

The military operations have provided a security response to the crisis, but residents say sustained security presence and the restoration of livelihoods are necessary if communities are to recover.

‘Thorough investigation should be carried out’

Meanwhile, a Katsina-based security expert, Abubakar Ibrahim, said the arrests should be followed by a thorough and evidence-based investigation before the suspects are prosecuted.

Ibrahim said the suspects should be accorded due process, stressing that allegations alone should not be treated as proof of guilt.

He said investigators should establish the individual roles of the suspects and determine whether there was evidence linking them to the alleged financing, arms procurement or other forms of support for bandit activities.

According to him, where evidence establishes criminal responsibility, the appropriate authorities should prosecute the suspects before a competent court.

He said the arrests should also send a strong warning to individuals who might be tempted to support banditry directly or indirectly.

‘People should understand that supporting criminals is not different from helping them to continue their activities. Anyone found to have knowingly facilitated criminal operations should face the law after due process,’ he said.

Ibrahim said the fight against banditry should not focus exclusively on armed fighters operating in forests, arguing that those who allegedly provide money, weapons, transportation, intelligence and other forms of assistance also form part of the wider security challenge.

He therefore urged security agencies to follow the financial and logistical links allegedly connected to the suspects in order to determine whether the network extends beyond the four people arrested.

The security expert said collaboration between communities and security personnel remained essential to identifying individuals allegedly supporting criminal activities and preventing them from exploiting local communities.

When contacted on the arrests, Yusuf Ibrahim Safana, the Special Assistant to Katsina State Governor Dikko Umar Radda on Security, said he would verify the information and get back to Daily Trust. However, he had not responded or returned the call as of the time of filing this report.

Also, when contacted, the spokesperson for the Katsina State Police Command, DSP Sadik Aliyu, said he was not aware of the reported arrests.

‘I am not aware of the arrests. I am not in Katsina,’ Aliyu told the Daily Trust.

The police spokesperson, however, promised to investigate the report and establish the facts before providing an official response.

‘I will investigate and get back to you after verifying the information,’ he said.

Kogi: Suspected kidnappers arrested while sharing ransom

Local vigilantes have arrested two suspected members of a four-man kidnapping gang operating along the boundary areas between Kogi and Enugu states.

Report from the area said the vigilantes and hunters acted on a tip-off and stormed the gang’s hideout in Egabada forest and arrested two members while they were sharing ransom collected from a victim.

The operation, allegedly coordinated by the SSA to the Kogi State Governor on Zonal Security, Idah Federal Constituency, led to the arrest of Salisu Ladan and Sumaila Abuh in the forest.

Two other members of the gang, identified as Babunga and Zafari reportedly escaped during the operation.

‘The four-man kidnapping gang have taken over the forest of Egabada and Odolu, terrorising residents and travellers along the route that links Kogi to Enugu State.

‘They successfully received ransom and released the victims. But luck ran against them while they were sharing the proceeds in Egabada forest, local vigilantes and hunters invaded their hideout and arrested two members, Salisu Ladan and Sumaila Abuh,’ a community source said.

The source added that the suspects have been handed over to the authorities for further investigation.

‘The two arrested suspects have been transferred to State CID for further action. Efforts are still ongoing to arrest the rest,’ the source said.

The two suspects confessed to the crime in a video clip, saying they received N200,000 ransom from a victim kidnapped at the weekend.

‘I came to Egabada community to look for job. I’m a labourer from Lokoja. We only kidnapped one person, and collected N200,000 from him. I carried a cutlass, not gun during the operation. I don’t use gun in operation,’ Ladan, one of the arrested suspects, said.

However, the Kogi State Police Command was contancted via text message over the incident, but its spokesperson, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, did not respond as at the time of filing this report.
