Former Miss Universe Jamaica sues Miss Universe org over 2025 stage fall

Miss Universe Jamaica 2025 Gabrielle Henry filed a negligence lawsuit against Miss Universe Organization (MUO) over her 2025 fall from the pageant stage, which caused her severe head injuries.

Henry lodged the case against MUO and its parent companies, JKN Legacy Inc. and Legacy Holding Group USA, on Monday, Sept. 21 in Delaware Superior Court. According to the copy of the complaint obtained by PEOPLE, the beauty queen alleged negligence, premises liability, negligent hiring, retention and supervision, as well as negligent and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

Henry said in her complaint that she was following rehearsed choreography during the Miss Universe preliminary competition on Nov. 19, 2025, when she fell about five feet through an ‘unmarked and uncovered opening’ on the stage that contained lighting equipment and concrete.

The Jamaican beauty queen said she had to be hospitalized from Nov. 19 to Dec. 10, 2025 after the fall left her with ‘traumatic brain injury with acute subarachnoid hemorrhage, frontal lobe hemorrhagic contusion, and subdural hemorrhage.’

Henry-who is an ophthalmologist-described the event as the ‘most traumatic moment’ of her life, adding that she was unable to resume her medical residency at the time due to her injuries.

In her complaint, she also cited accounts from other 2025 Miss Universe delegates who had supposedly complained as well about the lighting and staging conditions.

The MUO said it has yet to be notified of any lawsuit. It nonetheless pointed out that the production of the 2025 Miss Universe competition was under the responsibility of then host and production entities, MGI and Miss Universe Thailand.

‘Responsibility for the production of the 74th Miss Universe competition in Thailand, including the venue, the stage, and on-site safety, rested with the host and production entities, MGI and Miss Universe Thailand, under the direction of Mr. Nawat Itsaragrisil,’ MUO said in a statement shared to PEOPLE. ‘When those parties failed to cover Ms. Henry’s hospital expenses and left her unattended, the Miss Universe Organization stepped in and paid them, despite having no obligation to do so.’

‘The Organization also covered her treatment at a specialized hospital in Jamaica following her return home. Since then, the Organization has not received any request or claim for additional medical expenses,’ it added. ‘Going well beyond any legal responsibility, the Organization also offered Ms. Henry a place on the Miss Universe team as goodwill ambassador. We have not received a response to that offer.’

Henry has yet to comment on the organization’s statement as of this writing.

The MUO and Nawat are currently engaged in a power struggle that resulted in the pageant organization being distinguished into two factions: the Miss Universe West led by president Raul Rocha and Miss Universe Eastern led by Nawat as CEO.

Legarda ‘raring to come back’ to the Philippines, says her spokesperson

Sen. Loren Legarda is ‘raring to come back’ to the Philippines as soon as possible, her spokesperson said Thursday.

In an interview with the Inquirer, lawyer Tony La Viña said there is no definite date for Legarda’s return from France.

The senator is undergoing treatment for a serious lung disease that, the lawyer said, can flare up when she is under stress.

His statement comes amid an ongoing ombudsman investigation involving Legarda and her son, Batangas First District Rep. Leandro Leviste.

Her absence raises questions on whether she will still be able to vote in the impeachment proceedings against Vice President Sara Duterte.

La Viña said he cannot not disclose the specific details of Legarda’s condition, as it constitutes privileged information.

But he said it can possibly be an autoimmune disease that Legarda has been having for a long time.

‘When the treatment is done, that’s when she will return. As far as I know, I don’t know if there’s a specific date,’ La Viña said.

Asked whether Legarda will return to the Philippines if the complaint before the Office of the Ombudsman proceeds, La Viña said the senator’s decision will depend on the state of her treatment at that time.

‘But she’s raring to come back. She wants to return, right? As soon as possible,’ the counsel said.

La Viña added that Legarda’s desire to return was ‘not so much for impeachment’ but for her advocacies.

‘No flight’

Legarda has been away since Aug. 2, only a few days after the Office of the Ombudsman announced that she and her son would be subject to a preliminary investigation over P10 billion ‘ghost’ solar power projects.

She has, so far, filed six medical leaves, with her recent extension before the Senate reaching until Oct. 9.

La Viña pushed back against suggestions that Legarda’s continued disappearance was meant to evade the allegations against her.

‘There’s no flight here. So there’s no evasion,’ he said, adding that there was no warrant of arrest against the senator.

‘She’s not running away from anything,’ La Viña said, maintaining that Legarda had no connection to her son’s solar business.

He said Legarda was responding to the allegations against her through her lawyers, who had filed their counter-affidavits before the Ombudsman.

According to La Viña, the complainant had also since submitted a response, but he was not privy to its contents.

He said Legarda and Leviste may submit another response before the matter is subjected to resolution, which he said could take 30 to 60 days.

Case against Legarda not part of intimidation

When asked whether Legarda, as a member of the Senate minority, agreed with Sens. Alan and Pia Cayetano’s view that the cases against some senator-judges could be part of pressure on them, La Viña said Legarda does not see it that way.

‘I asked her about that, and she said that she does not see it that way. She doesn’t see it that way. This is not about the impeachment,’ he maintained.

Instead, the lawyer attributed the controversy involving the mother and son to the Rep. Leviste’s anti-corruption campaign in the House of Representatives.

He said Leviste began encountering problems after raising issues involving contractors and fellow lawmakers.

‘Because he obviously ruffled feathers at the House,’ La Viña noted.

Legarda on impeachment trial

Meanwhile, La Viña said he believes that Legarda is monitoring the impeachment proceedings, particularly the Senate’s decision on the conviction threshold.

He initially said, per his understanding, Legarda can no longer vote because she had not participated in the trial.

However, when told that Sen. Erwin Tulfo had said in a press briefing on Wednesday that senators who were physically present on voting day could still vote, La Viña said he was unsure which interpretation will ultimately apply.

The impeachment court on Wednesday amended the threshold ruling so the two-thirds needed for conviction will be computed based on senators legally and factually capable of participating at the time of voting, rather than a fixed 16 votes.

Shortly after, Tulfo subsequently clarified that the chamber had not lowered the two-thirds requirement.

He said that senators who will return and are physically present on the day of voting will be allowed to vote, regardless of whether or not they are able to physically attend all or some of the trials.

‘So is Loren. When Senator Loren gets better, then she may vote,’ Tulfo pointed out.

La Viña then mentioned that he did not know whether Legarda will return in time for the voting.

He observed that the defense had yet to present its case.

The spokesperson estimated that the proceedings can take another 30 days, potentially bringing the voting to November or December.

‘So hopefully, she can already return at that time,’ La Viña told the Inquirer.

Witness: DPWH yet to give Sunwest P14M meant to fix defects

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is withholding ?14 million in retention funds from contractor Sunwest over an allegedly substandard ?289 million flood control project in Oriental Mindoro.

The project led to a malversation case against former Ako Bicol Representative Zaldy Co and nine others.

DPWH Finance Division chief Cecilia Vicquerra, a witness presented by the counsel of project engineer Felisardo Casuno, appeared before the Sandiganbayan Sixth Division on Thursday.

Vicquerra signed a certification dated Sept. 17, 2026 stating that the DPWH has yet to release the retention amount to Sunwest, which was co-founded by Co.

The P14 million is the total amount of retention funds withheld from the first, second and third progress billings.

Both prosecution and defense stipulated or agreed on the authenticity of the three progress billings, as well as the total amount of retention funds.

Defect ‘impossible’ to fix

A 10-percent deduction is withheld from every progress billing payment of an infrastructure project to guarantee that its contractor fixes any defect, according to the DPWH.

However, DPWH chief Vince Dizon had told the anti-graft court on Wednesday that the project is ‘really impossible’ to repair.

Dizon testified before the Sandiganbayan Fifth Division on the graft case stemming from the same Oriental Mindoro project.

The secretary inspected the Naujan town’s road dike project in September last year.

He discovered that the dike only has three-meter steel sheet piles, which is far from the 12-meter requirement.

‘Rectification would mean destroying the project and replacing every sheet pile,’ Dizon told the court.

In an ambush interview after the trial, Dizon wondered: ‘For them to change the three-meter sheet pile, they would have to destroy the entire structure they made, right?’

National Surf Summit opens in Camarines Norte

The third National Surf Summit and Competition opened Thursday at Bagasbas Beach in Daet town, Camarines Norte, with 269 competitors taking part in a six-day event promoting safe and sustainable surf tourism in the country.

‘Bicol is blessed with some of the country’s incredible surfing destinations-from the powerful waves of Camarines Norte and Catanduanes to the surfing gems of Sorsogon,’ said Herbie Aguas, Department of Tourism (DOT) Bicol director, in a phone interview Thursday.

He said surfers and surfing enthusiasts from established surfing destinations, including Siargao, Baler, Zambales, Samar, Quezon and La Union, were expected to participate in the event.

‘Seeing the surfing community come together here in Bicol is both overwhelming and inspiring. This is more than a competition-it is a celebration of surfing, friendship, sportsmanship, tourism, and our shared love for the waves,’ Aguas said.

The event, themed ‘Building Safe and Sustainable Surfing,’ runs from Sept. 24 to 29 and is being held in collaboration with the provincial government of Camarines Norte and the Daet municipal government.

The four-day national surfing competition, sanctioned by the United Philippine Surfing Association (UPSA), brings together established athletes and emerging talents, Aguas said.

The event will also feature the launch of the National Surf Tourism Road Map and Action Plan and the Bicol Surf Fest, which aim to promote Bicol as a marine sports hub and showcase its coastal destinations to national and international audiences.

The surfing competition will be followed by the National Surf Summit, where government agencies, local governments, tourism stakeholders, surfing associations, environmental advocates, academe and private-sector partners will discuss sustainable surf tourism, safety management, environmental stewardship, destination governance and sports tourism development.

Tourism Secretary Dita Angara-Mathay is expected to lead DOT officials attending the event.

The National Surf Tourism Road Map and Action Plan will serve as the country’s strategic framework for the sustainable development, promotion, management and competitiveness of surf tourism destinations nationwide, Aguas said.
