2027: Tinubu-Shettima’s re-election best for Nigerians – City Boys

The City Boys Movement, a campaign group supporting the re-election bid of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice-President Kashim Shettima, has commenced grassroots mobilisation in Zamfara State ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking on Saturday at a gathering of All Progressives Congress (APC) supporters in Gusau, a member of the Governing Council of the City Boys Movement, Ahmad Abdulaziz Yari, said the group was mobilising support for the Tinubu-Shettima ticket.

Yari said the group believed that a second term for the President and Vice-President would, in its view, support further development across the country.

He urged APC supporters and other Nigerians to support the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

‘I urge APC supporters and all well-meaning Nigerians to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s on his renewed hope agenda for the development of our country,’ he said.

In his welcome address, the Zamfara State Chairman of the organising committee, Surajo Muhammad Birnin-Magaji, said the group would mobilise support for the APC across the state.

Also speaking, the Zamfara State Coordinator of Grassroots Mobilisers for Tinubu and Shettima 2027, Alhaji Muhammad Adamu, said the organisation would take its mobilisation campaign to communities across the state.

He said the group would focus on creating awareness at the grassroots about the policies and programmes of the Tinubu-Shettima administration and its campaign for re-election in 2027.

‘Our organisation would take message to the grassroots, particularly communities where people require direct information about Tinubu and Shettima’s renewed hope agenda and why they should be re-elected,’ he said.

CIOTA holds conference on multimodal transport

The Chartered Institute of Transport Administration of Nigeria (CIOTA) has announced its eighth National Transport Conference, with a call for stronger integration of Nigeria’s road, rail, maritime, aviation, inland waterways and pipeline transport systems.

The National President and Chairman of the Governing Council of CIOTA, Prince Segun Ochuko Obayendo, disclosed this on Friday at a press briefing held at the Nigerian Railway Corporation headquarters, Lagos.

Obayendo said the conference, themed ‘Integrated Multimodal Transport System for Sustainable Development in Nigeria,’ would bring together policymakers, transport professionals, investors, academics, development partners and operators across the various transport sectors.

He said Nigeria could not achieve sustainable development through isolated transport systems, stressing that roads, railways, seaports, airports and inland waterways needed to operate as a connected national network to reduce logistics costs, improve safety, boost trade competitiveness, create jobs and support economic growth.

He said the conference would focus on national multimodal transport integration, urban mobility, logistics and supply chain competitiveness, Intelligent Transport Systems and digital innovation, green transportation and climate resilience, public-private partnerships, infrastructure financing, professional capacity development and transport governance.

Obayendo also announced the unveiling of the CIOTA Gazette as a major highlight of the conference, describing it as an instrument to strengthen the institute’s regulatory standing, codify professional standards and provide legal backing for the practice of transport administration in Nigeria.

‘For decades, transport administration in Nigeria has operated without the cohesive professional framework it deserves. The Gazette changes that,’ he said, adding that it would establish clearer standards for practitioners, strengthen accountability and provide an institutional framework for reforms in the transport sector.

The CIOTA president invited government officials, transport regulators and operators, local government administrators, logistics companies, manufacturers, universities, research institutions, young professionals, development partners, investors and other stakeholders to participate in the conference, which he said was expected to produce recommendations for policy reforms and stronger professional practice.

The Chairman of the National Planning Committee, Dr Taiwo Olufemi Salaam, said transportation was central to Nigeria’s economic and social development, noting that the country could not achieve sustainable development without an efficient system that allowed people and goods to move safely, affordably, reliably and efficiently.

Salaam said Nigeria’s transport system had developed largely around individual modes, stressing the need for effective connections among road, rail, water, air and non-motorised transport. He said each mode should perform the function for which it was most suitable rather than compete with the others.

According to him, rail could support the movement of passengers and freight over longer distances, waterways could facilitate the movement of people and goods, road transport could provide first- and last-mile connectivity, while air transport remained critical for long-distance and time-sensitive travel.

Salaam said better integration could reduce congestion, improve logistics and mobility, enhance road safety, lower environmental impacts and increase productivity, particularly as Nigeria’s cities and economy grow.

He added that the conference would examine the roles of technology, infrastructure, regulation, institutional coordination, investment and professional transport administration in achieving a sustainable multimodal transport system.

FULL LIST: Man City face points deduction, fine, expulsion as possible punishments for 114 financial breaches

Manchester City could face a range of sanctions after an independent commission found the club guilty of 114 of the 115 financial-rule charges brought against them.

The sanctions are yet to be determined, while City are expected to appeal the verdict.

The case relates to alleged breaches of the Premier League’s financial regulations between the 2009/10 and 2017/18 seasons, as well as alleged failures by the club to co-operate with the league’s investigation.

The Premier League charged City in February 2023 with 115 alleged breaches. The charges included 54 relating to financial information, 14 concerning player and manager payments, five involving UEFA regulations, including Financial Fair Play rules, seven concerning the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules, and 35 relating to alleged failures to co-operate with the investigation.

The league’s disciplinary rules allow an independent commission to impose several sanctions.

Points deduction

City could be handed a points deduction, potentially affecting their Premier League position.

The league has previously imposed points deductions for financial breaches. Everton, for example, initially received a 10-point deduction for breaching the Profitability and Sustainability Rules, which was later reduced to six points following an appeal.

No publicly established points tariff applies to the City case, so any deduction would depend on the commission’s assessment of the breaches and relevant mitigating factors.

Fine

The commission can impose an unlimited fine, with no fixed maximum amount under the disciplinary rules.

There is currently no indication of how much City could be ordered to pay if the commission imposes a financial penalty.

Suspension from Premier League matches

The commission can also suspend a club from playing Premier League matches for a period it considers appropriate.

Such a sanction would have a significant sporting impact on City, although the commission has not indicated it intends to impose a suspension.

Player-registration restrictions

The disciplinary framework also allows the commission to cancel or refuse player registrations in certain circumstances.

This could potentially restrict City’s ability to register players, although there is no indication that such a punishment will be imposed.

Compensation

Another possible sanction is an order for City to pay compensation.

The rules do not set a stated monetary limit on the amount of compensation that can be awarded.

Could Man City be stripped of Premier League titles?

The possibility of City losing titles won during the period covered by the charges has also attracted attention.

Title stripping is not expressly listed among the commission’s named sanctions. However, the Premier League’s disciplinary rules give the commission broad powers to impose a combination of penalties or ‘such other penalty as it shall think fit’.

City won three Premier League titles during the period covered by the case: 2011/12, 2013/14 and 2017/18.

However, the Premier League has no established precedent for stripping a club of a title over financial-rule breaches, leaving the possibility uncertain.

Expulsion from the Premier League

The most severe potential sanction would be expulsion from the Premier League.

The league’s rules allow an independent commission to recommend that a club be expelled from its membership.

No domestic precedent exists for a financial case of this nature resulting in expulsion.

City previously faced a major European sanction when UEFA banned them from the Champions League for two seasons in February 2020 over Financial Fair Play breaches. The Court of Arbitration for Sport overturned the ban in July that year, while reducing the club’s fine.

For now, the sanctions against City have yet to be determined, with the club expected to appeal the commission’s verdict.

Maguindanao mayor ordered arrested over mayor’s ambush

An Iligan City court on Friday ordered the arrest of Mayor Xyril Ampatuan of Datu Unsay, Maguindanao del Sur, and 11 others charged with terrorism in connection with the ambush on Mayor Akmad ‘Mitra’ Ampatuan of Shariff Aguak town early this year.

Presiding Judge Alberto Quinto of Iligan City Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 1 issued the arrest warrant against Xyril Ampatuan in connection with three counts of terrorism under Republic Act No. 11479. The charges are non-bailable.

Xyril Ampatuan is the son of Andal Ampatuan Jr., also a former town mayor and a primary suspect in the 2009 Maguindanao massacre that killed 58 people, including journalists.

He is being accused of being involved in the ambush-slay of Mitra Ampatuan, a relative, who was aboard a black sport utility vehicle and trailed by his security escorts when they were hit by a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) and a volley of gunfire on Jan. 25.

Aside from Xyril Ampatuan, the Iligan City RTC ordered the arrest of Ababang Salik (alias Babang), Edad Pendatun (alias Haider), Aboher Guimbangan, Toraipie Lusod, Gapor Magaluyan, Mohamad Uday (alias Tho Sapalon), Samsudin Mokamad, Saudi Guiapal, Johari Guiapal, Soy Kali and Datuben Gyon Allib Dimao.

In May, Mitra’s lawyers presented in a preliminary examination hearing at the Department of Justice the RPG allegedly used by his attackers.

5 Grade 11 students drown in Zamboanga Sibugay river

Five Grade 11 students died after they were swept away by rampaging floodwaters while swimming in a river in Purok Santan in Barangay New Antique in RT Lim town in Zamboanga Sibugay on Thursday, September 24.

Local executives and officials of the Zamboanga Sibugay Provincial Police Office separately told reporters on Saturday that the five fatalities, the classmates Dave Cahilig, Jia Fernandez, Hannah Karanain, Kizzy Aganon and Myka Baynosa, were found one after another by emergency responders at a downstream stretch of the river, far from where they were last seen swimming together by villagers in nearby enclaves.

The five Grade 11 students who perished in the incident are students of Surabay National High School in RT Lim, one of the towns in Zamboanga Sibugay, home to mixed Muslim and Christian communities.

Six of their classmates, Wendell Cabucos, Rodel Boguillon, James Empas, Jonhry Talledo, Reymark Dacuba and Jannisher Salipmuksin, were spotted along the sides of the river and promptly rescued by emergency response teams and personnel of the Bureau of Fire Protection and the RT Lim Municipal Police Station.

All six of them were immediately examined by physicians before they were endorsed to their parents by rescuers.

Talks and text messages are spreading around purporting that the students reportedly agreed to cut classes, go to the river for an outing, which turned awry and left five of them drowned, found lifeless by rescuers.

Municipal and barangay officials had told reporters that the 11 students were swimming at a portion of a wide river in Purok Santan when they were swept downstream by floodwaters spawned by heavy rains in mountain ranges in surrounding towns.

Radio reports in Cotabato City on Saturday stated that officials of the RT Lim local government unit and Zamboanga Sibugay provincial officials are to help the families of Cahilig, Fernandez, Karanain, Aganon and Baynosa facilitate their burial.

With sky-high confidence, Arbole eyes another crown in Iloilo

Art Arbole’s confidence is soaring after finally ending a 14-year title drought – and for a change, he knows he won’t be sneaking up on anybody.

The newly crowned ICTSI Negros Occidental Classic champion embraces the bullseye as the Philippine Golf Tour shifts to Iloilo, where he expects the Tour’s big guns, seasoned campaigners and emerging stars to come after him when the ICTSI Iloilo Golf Challenge gets going on September 29 at the Iloilo Golf and Country Club.

But Arbole says he is feeling more determined than nervous, buoyed by the belief that his breakthrough victory has finally erased the doubts that had lingered through years of near-misses.

‘Cloud 9 pa rin ang pakiramdam ko. Yung confidence ko mas tumaas kasi dati parang may takot ako na wala pa ding mangyayari sa laro ko,’ said Arbole, who put together one of the most complete performances of his career in Negros.

The Del Monte native, now based in Canlubang, bucked the odds in dramatic fashion, overcoming a shaky stretch that saw him surrender a one-stroke lead and fall three shots behind former Order of Merit winner Jhonnel Ababa.

Instead of folding, Arbole responded with a birdie barrage from No. 9 that turned the tide and put him back in command. He then held off last year’s South Pacific leg winner Jeffren Lumbo in a thrilling stretch-run duel to claim his first PGT title.

The manner of the victory may have been as significant as the breakthrough itself.

Arbole’s driving was crisp, his iron play and woods were on point, and his putting held firm the pressure mounted – all the pieces of his game finally clicking at the same time.

Now comes the harder part: proving it was no one-week flash of brilliance.

‘Sana dito sa Iloilo, maging maganda pa din ang ipakita ko,’ he said.

That quest begins on a course that could demand an entirely different brand of golf.

The former Santa Barbara layout is tight and tricky, much like Marapara, but its quirks and stern challenges can punish even the slightest lapse in concentration. It is the kind of venue that can test patience as much as shot-making, with the premium likely to be on precision, course management and the ability to stay composed when birdies are hard to come by.

And this time, Arbole will have a much larger target on his back.

Among those looking to derail his bid for back-to-back titles are Ababa, Tony Lascuña, Clyde Mondilla, Rupert Zaragosa, Reymon Jaraula, Guido van der Valk, Lumbo and Zanieboy Gialon.

Gialon, in particular, returns to a venue where he has already left his mark, having dominated the last Iloilo Challenge in 2024. He won by six strokes over Angelo Que and Ira Alido.

Que, meanwhile, will be eager to bounce back after settling for joint 13th in Negros. The reigning Order of Merit winner and a two-leg champion this season had entered the previous event with momentum after ruling the PGT stop at Summit Point, only to come away with a result below his usual lofty standards.

The chase in the P2.5-million championship organized by Pilipinas Golf Tournaments Inc. and serving as the seventh leg of this year’s Tour is further deepened by Russell Bautista, Collin Wheeler, Michael Bibat, Dino Villanueva, Ryan Monsalve, Gabriel Manotoc, Arnold Villacencio, Elee Bisera, Kim Tae Soo, Nilo Salahog, Jay Bayron, Mars Pucay and Gerald Rosales.

Delta comedian to hold first Lagos comedy special in October

Nigerian comedian and entertainer Ericardo is set to stage his first Lagos comedy special, titled ‘Ericardo: REDEPLOYED,’ on October 25, 2026.

The special will take place at Banex Cinemas, Lekki, Lagos, marking a new phase in the comedian’s career after several years of building his profile on the comedy circuit in Warri, Delta State.

Ericardo’s transition to Lagos is the show’s central theme, drawing on his experience of moving from Warri to Nigeria’s commercial and entertainment hub.

The title, REDEPLOYED, was inspired by his posting to Lagos by the National Youth Service Corps for his service year.

Before his move, Ericardo staged three sold-out comedy shows in Warri while pursuing his ambition to expand his career beyond Delta State.

‘REDEPLOYED is about the journey. It is about leaving what you know, entering a new environment and figuring things out along the way,’ Ericardo said.

The special comes two years after his last major comedy show and is expected to feature stand-up comedy, personal stories and observations on career growth, relationships, ambition and adjusting to life in a new city.

Ericardo has also built a career as a master of ceremonies and event host, having hosted more than 250 events across Nigeria, including corporate functions, concerts, weddings and entertainment productions.

Atasha Muhlach keeping ‘head down’ amid Annie Batungbakal praises, bashing

Actress-singer Atasha Muhlach is keeping herself humble amid the numerous comments going around about her lead performance in “Bongga Ka Day!: The Annie Batungbakal Musical.”

The production inspired by the songs Manila Sound pioneers Hotdog is the latest offering by Full House Theater Company (FHTC) alongside producers Newport World Resorts, VIVA Communications and The Philippine STAR, with Atasha in the titular role.

Atasha’s casting received mixed reception, however, many noted it was a return to the stage for the young artist, but others said actresses with more experience could have taken the part.

Another point of discussion was Atasha’s twin brother Andres being a lead in the last FHTC production “Bagets the Musical,” taking on the role originated by their father Aga in the 1984 movie of the same, despite having no theater experience.

Aga and wife Charlene Gonzalez were present for the opening night of “Bongga Ka Day!” last September 18 and in an interview with the media, defended their daughter by pointing out the hard work she put in for preparations even after receiving criticism.

“I’ll be honest, sa mga tumira sa kanya noon talaga. Sabi ko, ‘Huwag mo na lang pansinin,’ ‘di ba? Ganun talaga, e,” Aga said. “Sa mga tumira sa kanya, galing sa isang ama po, nagta-trabaho lang ‘yung bata, ‘di ba? Wala namang pinagyayabang. Gusto lang mag-hanapbuhay. Gustong gumawa ng show.”

The critical buzz need not seem to bother Atasha at all during the production’s gala performance the following week, and she was still in high spirits while speaking to the media after the show.

Atasha particularly enjoyed and labelled a surreal feeling seeing the live audience’s reactions and laughter as the musical progressed.

“Sa totoo lang my goal was to just put my head down, really work hard, and try my best,” she continued. “For me to just see people laughing, enjoying, dancing with us, that’s all that matters.”

The singer expressed gratitude not just for her immediate kin but the families she built in showbiz, particularly the Dabarkads on “Eat Bulaga!” which Atasha has been a co-host of since 2023.

“My heart is just very, very full and I’m feeling nothing but blessed and grateful to have such supportive people in my life,” the actress said. “They are the reason why I want to keep on going and continue pursuing my dreams. They’re just my rock, my everything.”

Atasha laughed off the thought that negative comments may still be coming her way, opting instead to “focus on the good.”

“I just want to thank the people who have been super supportive on this whole journey, maraming salamat talaga from the bottom of my heart – I just hope to do good for you guys,” Atasha ended.

Troops ??intercept 43 ISWAP family members, rescue 9 kidnap victims

The Nigerian Army has listed interception of 44 family members of Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists and rescue of nine kidnapped victims among the recent achievements of its troops in separate operations across the country.

The operations also led to the arrest of suspected kidnappers and collaborators and the recovery of several weapons and ammunition, according to an operational report made on Friday.

According to the report, troops of 222 Battalion intercepted 43 ISWAP terrorist family members at Kawuri, Konduga Local Government Area of Borno.

It said preliminary investigation revealed that the group escaped from terrorist captivity in Yuwe during clashes between JAS and ISWAP terrorists.

The intercepted people were subsequently handed over to 7 Multinational Intervention Brigade for further action.

The report also indicated that troops of 192 Battalion intercepted a female ISWAP terrorist family member along the Gwoza-Limankara road in Gwoza Local Government Area.

The report said preliminary investigation revealed that the woman escaped from a terrorist enclave in Chikide, on the Mandara Mountains.

‘In another development, troops of 1 Brigade rescued five kidnapped victims, including the Chairman of Bungudu Local Government Area of Zamfara, from suspected terrorists’ captivity.

‘The victims were rescued at a suspected terrorist camp around Sekpore village, Kaura Namoda Local Government Area, after troops established blocking positions around Sekpore and Sabon Gari,’ it said.

The report said the victims had recently been relocated from Abaniyawa terrorist camp following military pressure, while several other victims escaped during the operation.

It said that one of the rescued victims was reunited with his family, while the others were evacuated to 1 Brigade Medical Centre for medical attention.

The report further revealed that troops of Counter-Terrorism 4, in another operation along the Gusau-Sokoto road, responded to a terrorist attack on a vehicle and engaged the attackers.

It added that the terrorists fled into surrounding bushes, enabling the troops to rescue four civilian occupants of the vehicle.

‘In Borno, troops of 149 Battalion and Civilian Joint Task Force arrested a suspected kidnapper at Gubio town and recovered an AK-47 rifle.

‘The suspect subsequently led troops to Ardimini village, where they recovered an AK-47 magazine loaded with 12 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition.

‘Troops of 159 Task Force Battalion and Nigerian Forest Guards also arrested a suspected terrorist collaborator at Geidam market, recovering a mobile phone and N296,000,’ it said.

The report further said troops of Operation Savannah Shield raided a suspected terrorist camp at Alogomo, Edu Local Government Area of Niger.

It said the terrorists reportedly fled before troops arrived, while the troops recovered an AK-47 magazine containing eight rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition and destroyed the camp.

According to the report, troops of Operation Whirl Stroke arrested two suspected kidnappers along the Otukpo-Makurdi road in Benue and recovered an AK-47 rifle, 25 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition and a motorcycle.

‘Troops also arrested a suspected gunrunner at Adikpo, Kwande Local Government Area, as well as two suspected impostors in Benue and Taraba.

‘In a related operation, troops in Edo, working with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), destroyed two cannabis farms at Oke Camp and Eko Camp 1 and 2 in Esan South-East Local Government Area.

‘Four suspects were arrested and fresh and dried cannabis recovered before the suspects and exhibits were handed over to the NDLEA,’ it added.

2027: NDC guber candidate Lulu-Briggs urges Rivers women to reject vote-buying

Rivers State governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Chief Dumo Lulu-Briggs, has urged women across the state not to exchange their votes for money ahead of the 2027 election.

Lulu-Briggs, who spoke to NDC women leaders and their deputies from the 23 local government areas, likened vote-buying to the biblical account of Esau, who sold his birthright for a meal.

He said money offered to voters during elections could represent public resources being returned to them as inducement.

‘The money dangled before them as bait to impoverish them for another four years is their own money, gotten from their commonwealth and handed back as a bribe. There is no way anyone can ‘dash’ them what already belongs to them,’ he said.

The NDC candidate urged the women to reject short-term inducements and focus on opportunities that could improve their livelihoods and those of their children.

Lulu-Briggs said his proposed ‘Reset Government’ would seek to reduce dependence on political connections for economic opportunities by improving access to jobs, finance, markets and skills development.

He said the NDC set a target to lay the foundation for Rivers State’s economy to grow from $20 billion to $200 billion within 15 years.

‘We have set our sights on laying the foundation to move Rivers State from a $20 billion economy today to a $200 billion economy within fifteen years,’ he said.

Lulu-Briggs said the target could not be achieved without women, whose businesses, farms, fisheries and market activities contribute significantly to the state’s economic life.

‘No economy grows tenfold on the backs of men alone. It will take the small businesses our women run, the farms and fisheries they work, the markets they sustain, and the households they hold together,’ he said.

He also promised skills training linked to employment, improved access to finance and markets, and greater attention to clean water, environmental protection, and community safety.

Lulu-Briggs said his administration would be judged by tangible results, not promises.

‘This is not a promise of a blank cheque; it is a covenant to be judged by evidence, by what our women can see change in their own homes and businesses,’ he said.

He urged the women to take the ‘Reset Rivers State’ message to communities across the state, mobilise voters and protect their votes.
