Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis reiterated to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan the firm and publicly stated position for the resumption of negotiations within the framework of the United Nations, from the point at which they were interrupted in 2017 in Crans Montana, during their private meeting, yesterday afternoon in Ankara, as Mitsotakis informed the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, on the sidelines of the Informal Summit in Alden Bissen on Thursday. The position was in line with consistency and previous coordination, according to a government source that spoke to CNA.

The Turkish President’s response, according to the same source, was in the same context as his previous public and private statements, without escalation or differentiation of style, and without a change in his position.

Regarding the overall assessment of the meeting, according to the same source, it leads to the conclusion that the climate of low tension and of efforts for functional communication is maintained, with the main feature being the maintenance of calm conditions at the present stage.

Moreover, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cyprus, Konstantinos Kombos, had a telephone conversation with his Greek counterpart, Giorgos Gerapetritis, according to a social media post by the Cypriot Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday afternoon, with the aim of mutual information exchange and close coordination, as noted.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.

A scientific-practical conference on “The Founder of Azerbaijani Petrochemistry: Yusif Mammadaliyev,” dedicated to the 120th anniversary of Academician Yusif Mammadaliyev, has taken place at the Heydar Aliyev Center in Shaki city, Azernews reports.

The conference was organized jointly by the Shaki City Executive Power, the city’s Heydar Aliyev Center, and the Shaki Regional Scientific Center. Speaking at the event, Deputy Head of the Shaki City Executive Power – Head of the Department of Public-Political and Humanitarian Affairs, Khayala Tohrabli, provided extensive information about the life and work of the prominent scientist Yusif Mammadaliyev and his rich contributions to world science.

The Academician Yusif Mammadaliyev made outstanding contributions to the development of technological processes of great applied significance for producing valuable industrial products. The establishment of several scientific institutions and organizations in the country is associated with his name.

Pursuing a wide range of fundamental research alongside effective pedagogical work, Yusif Mammadaliyev founded the Azerbaijani school of petrochemistry, which became widely recognized far beyond the country’s borders.

In accordance with the Decree of the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, on celebrating the 120th anniversary of academician Yusif Mammadaliyev, various events dedicated to the prominent scientist’s jubilee have been held this year in Azerbaijan, including in Shaki.

At the conference, presentations were also delivered by Yusif Shukurlu, Director of the Shaki Regional Scientific Center of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, PhD in Physics and Associate Professor, on “The Azerbaijani Scientist Who Changed the Fate of the Fight Against German Fascism – Academician Yusif Mammadaliyev” and by Vafa Atayeva, Scientific Secretary of the Regional Scientific Center, on “Yusif Mammadaliyev’s Role in Oil and Gas Chemistry and Technology.”

The conference concluded with the screening of a documentary film about the life and work of Academician Yusif Mammadaliyev.

The presentation ceremony of the ‘Azerbaijani Language’ platform was held on December 28 at Azerbaijan University of Languages. The author and head of the project is Alena Aliyeva.

Vice-President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation and founder and head of IDEA Public Union Leyla Aliyeva, Head of Baku Media Center Arzu Aliyeva, and the project’s author and head Alena Aliyeva attended the event.

First, Rector of Azerbaijan University of Languages Kamal Abdulla briefed the guests on the university’s activities. The guests then visited the university museum, familiarized themselves with its work, and were informed about the exhibits on display.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Kamal Abdulla emphasized the importance of the platform in preserving, developing, and promoting the Azerbaijani language in the modern digital environment.

Referring to President Ilham Aliyev’s remarks on the preservation and development of the Azerbaijani language during the meeting dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, the rector noted that there was a strong need for such a platform. He said that the university’s scientists and young specialists had honorably fulfilled this task.

‘As Azerbaijan University of Languages, we establish centers for the Azerbaijani language, culture, and the multiculturalism model at foreign universities and teach our language to the youth of those countries. The creation of such platforms and projects is directly related to the work carried out by President Ilham Aliyev in this direction. It is important for these platforms to be interconnected. Certain work is being done by various universities, institutions, and ministries in line with the instructions and recommendations of the head of state, but unfortunately, these platforms and projects are often implemented without coordination. I hope they will support and complement one another and demonstrate continuity. In this regard, the establishment of a Coordination Council would be desirable, enabling more targeted implementation of the President’s instructions,’ Kamal Abdulla stressed.

In her speech, the author and head of the project, Alena Aliyeva, highlighted the important role of education in society and congratulated the participants on the presentation of the platform. She expressed gratitude to the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Azerbaijan University of Languages, and all project participants for their support in implementing the initiative.

Subsequently, Vice-Rector of Azerbaijan University of Languages Jala Garibova and project coordinator Sabina Aliyeva presented the ‘Azerbaijani Language’ platform. Detailed information was provided on the goals behind its creation, its functional capabilities, and content designed for different age groups and users.

Minister of Science and Education Emin Amrullayev, who delivered a congratulatory address, stated that the ‘Azerbaijani Language’ platform would make an important contribution to improving the quality of teaching and learning the state language and expanding digital educational resources. He emphasized that such initiatives play a special role in developing the Azerbaijani language in line with modern challenges.

Speaking about efforts undertaken in accordance with President Ilham Aliyev’s instructions to preserve the purity of the Azerbaijani language, the minister said: ‘The essence of the platform is to teach our language to people whose native language is not Azerbaijani. The Azerbaijani language has a wide reach, with more than 50 million speakers worldwide. Mastering this language is important from several perspectives. The platform will be especially useful for foreign students studying in Azerbaijan, foreigners wishing to work in our country, and those who want to learn Azerbaijani as a foreign language. The platform is built on English, but it can also be translated into other languages. Artificial intelligence solutions are actively used. I am confident that the platform will be successful.’

A video dedicated to the ‘Azerbaijani Language’ platform was then screened.

Next, Pakistani student Mahmud Athar, a doctoral student at the Pakistan Centre operating at Azerbaijan University of Languages, noted that his studies at the university had enabled him to learn and actively use the Azerbaijani language in daily life.

Emphasizing that language is the soul of a nation, its culture, and its way of thinking, he said: ‘The Azerbaijani language is very rich, as it is the language of Nizami and Fuzuli. Through our center, we strive to promote the Azerbaijani language and culture abroad. Together with the Azerbaijan Centre in Islamabad, we organize cultural events and promote the language. We have published a book for Pakistani students to learn Azerbaijani, contributing to its broader international recognition. People often ask me how I learned Azerbaijani. Our rector always recommends listening carefully to all speeches of President Ilham Aliyev-this is the main method. Azerbaijani has a strong unifying power; it brings together people of different countries and nations. It is not merely a means of communication, but a strong bridge connecting people, cultures, and countries. I am proud to learn this language.’

Well-known journalist and Honored Journalist of the Russian Federation Mikhail Gusman, a graduate of Azerbaijan University of Languages, also spoke at the event. He noted the growing global interest in the Azerbaijani language, citing research conducted annually by Stanford University. According to him, despite Azerbaijan being a relatively small country, interest in the Azerbaijani language has increased significantly in recent years.

‘This fully corresponds to the effective policy pursued by President Ilham Aliyev and the global interest in Azerbaijan. The growing demand for the melodic, rich, and noble Azerbaijani language is the result of the path our country is following under the President’s leadership. I thank you for creating this remarkable platform at exactly the right time,’ he said, adding that he graduated from Azerbaijan University of Languages with honors 55 years ago.

An artistic program was also presented as part of the ceremony.

The event concluded with commemorative photos.

A 40-year-old Chinese man was arrested at a rented house in tambon Ban Tai on Koh Phangan on Sunday evening on charges of illegal entry and selling drugs to partygoers.

His arrest followed a tip-off that a foreigner was involved in drug selling, police said.

Surveillance showed frequent visits by foreigners to the house. When police moved in to make an arrest, the suspect attempted to flee and then to barricade himself inside, to no avail.

A search found mushrooms, ecstasy pills, LSD and drug paraphernalia, according to police.

During questioning the man allegedly admitted he entered Thailand illegally via a natural pathway, paying a Cambodian guide 20,000 baht. He allegedly confessed to buying the drugs from a Russian supplier through the Telegram app, then reselling them to tourists in Koh Phangan’s party zones.

The Department of Science and Technology National Capital Region (DOST NCR) signed Monday a memorandum of agreement with two waste management companies to make the agency ‘zero-waste’ by 2028.

The DOST NCR agreed with waste management companies Basic Environmental Systems and Technologies (BEST) and Sentinel Upcycling Technologies at this year’s Regional Science, Technology and Innovation Week held at the Technological Institute of the Philippines in Quezon City.

BEST will trade in the DOST NCR’s recyclable waste for office supplies and materials, the government agency’s technical support services assistant director, Bianca Claudette Canlas, explained in a press conference during the celebration.

Meanwhile, Sentinel will take the regional office’s plastic waste to process it into new products like chairs and tables, Canlas added.

‘We want to start walking the talk on a circular economy before we bring this plan to our stakeholders, like our manufacturers, our consumers, distributors,’ Canlas maintained.

A circular economy is a concept in which waste is minimized, and products are maximized for use as long as possible.

‘We will start by training our staff starting in December up to January on how to properly segregate waste materials,’ Canlas explained.

Senator Risa Hontiveros on Monday evening said she is positive that Cassie Li Ong and Harry Roque will soon be brought home to face charges against them.

In a statement, Hontiveros emphasized that the two cannot run from their responsibilities forever.

‘Cassie Li Ong and Harry Roque are facing serious charges of human trafficking. It is only right that their passports were canceled, especially since they appear to be evading the law,’ said Hontiveros.

‘Our government must also not stop until other criminal syndicates that enabled these Pogo scam hubs are held accountable. The conviction of Alice Guo is not the end of the story. She is not the only one who must answer for these crimes-everyone involved should be held responsible,’ she added.

The Pasig City Regional Trial Court has cancelled the passports of former presidential spokesperson Roque and Ong.

They are facing a human trafficking case for their alleged involvement in the Philippine Offshore Gaming Operator hub Lucky South 99 and Whirlwind Corporations.

Local governments in Caraga, the Visayas and some parts of Bicol on Monday evacuated residents in high risk areas and placed all disaster response units on high alert as Tropical Depression ‘Verbena’ continued to bring widespread rains, prompting precautionary measures, sea travel suspensions and class cancellations.

Verbena had brought heavy rains in these areas before it made landfall over Bayabas, Surigao del Sur, at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, maintaining maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour (kph) and gusts up to 55 kph.

It was in the vicinity of Jabonga, Agusan del Norte, at 5 p.m. Monday, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration.

In Mindanao, classes in the provinces of Surigao del Norte, Agusan del Norte, Butuan City, 10 towns of Agusan del Sur, and Valencia City, Bukidnon province were suspended on Monday in anticipation of possible floods and landslides.

In the Visayas, among the localities that went on high alert were Borongan City in Eastern Samar; Naval, Biliran; Southern Leyte; Negros Occidental, especially in localities surrounding Mt. Kanlaon, where the rains could trigger lahar flow; and Iloilo

The Mines and Geosciences Bureau in Eastern Visayas listed 1,560 barangays as landslide-prone and 3,466 as flood-prone, urging residents to stay vigilant and report incidents to authorities.

In Southern Leyte, the Philippine Coast Guard reported 56 passengers, 29 rolling cargoes, and one vessel stranded in the ports of San Ricardo, San Juan, Padre Burgos, and Maasin City after a no-sailing policy took effect. Commercial trips between Cebu and Leyte, including routes to Ormoc, Baybay, Bato, and Hilongos, were also suspended.

Kanlaon alert

In Negros Occidental, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the rains could generate volcanic sediment flows, muddy runoffs, and riverine flooding around Kanlaon, which remains under Alert Level 2.

Lahars may form when rainfall remobilizes loose debris from the Oct. 24 eruption and subsequent ash emissions, warning that lahars could carry boulders and debris capable of burying communities and sweeping away structures.

Vulnerable schools

The Department of Education (DepEd) said over 10,700 schools nationwide face potential hazards due to the combined effects of Verbena and the shear line.

DepEd said 5,657 schools in 89 divisions were at risk of flooding, while 5,117 schools in 84 divisions are prone to rain-triggered landslides. These risks prompted widespread class suspensions across Mimaropa, Bicol, Western Visayas, Central Visayas, Eastern Visayas, and Caraga, which were all under Tropical Wind Cyclone Signal No. 1.

A total of 4,343 public schools halted in-person classes, affecting more than 2.3 million learners and nearly 100,000 teachers. Eastern Visayas logged the highest number of affected students.
