’Prefab containers now a necessity’

Lagos-based firm, Easy Porta Nigeria, has introduced prefabricated containers into the market.

Managing Director, Allen, said the move to high-specification prefabricated container structures is a necessity.

In a statement, Allen, an engineer, also said: ‘The greatest advantage of prefab is not just the speed, but the quality consistency you achieve in a controlled factory environment.”

The engineer, with over three decades’ experience in the metal and steel fabrication and construction business, said Nigeria’s construction sector is undergoing a quiet, yet fundamental, revolution driven by need for speed, cost certainty, and quality control.

At the heart of this shift, he said, is the rise of modular construction-manufacturing of structures off-site for rapid assembly, a methodology industry veterans believe is suited to bridging the country’s infrastructure and housing gaps.

He noted that for decades, traditional brick-and-mortar processes dominated the industry. But as logistics become more complex and material costs fluctuate, the predictability offered by factory-built systems, particularly those relying on robust steel structures, is proving highly attractive.

Fed Govt: efforts intensify for YABATECH upgrade

The Federal Government has intensified efforts to work out the modalities for the upgrade of Yaba College of Technology(YABATECH) to University of Technology and Vocational Studies.

Speaking at the institution’s 37th convocation, President Bola Tinubu, who was represented by the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad, noted that the upgrade of the institution was aimed at integrating hands-on technical training with advanced research, fostering innovation, economic growth and national development.

A total of 8,654 students received National Diplomas, Higher National Diplomas and Certificates for the 2023/2024 academic session.

They include 291 Distinctions, 2,434 Upper Credits, 4,403 Lower Credits and 1,526 Pass grades.

The President had approved the conversion of YABATECH to a university in February.

He said: ‘As you are aware, the Federal Government has approved the upgrading of YABATECH to Yaba Technical and Vocational University.

The committee constituted to work on the modalities to bring about seamless transition has already submitted its report. The recommendations are being considered.’

Tinubu noted that the government had prioritised Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medical Sciences alongside technical and vocational education, stressing their importance to youth development and the nation’s growth.

He said Federal Ministry of Education has continued to align learning with employability through the expansion of vocational training and digital skills programmes.

Tinubu urged the graduates to be at the forefront of nation-building.

‘Through the Vocational Enterprise Institutes, over 960,000 trainees have been enrolled nationwide across more than 25 specialised trades, ensuring that young Nigerians acquire practical, market-ready skills.

‘In addition, the Ministry of Education is driving large-scale digital capacity-building programmes to equip graduates for success in Nigeria’s fast-evolving digital economy. These initiatives include intensive digital literacy bootcamps in coding, cybersecurity, data analytics, and digital marketing; e-learning platforms that provide access to certified online courses; structured internships and industrial attachments with leading technology companies; and the establishment of innovation and entrepreneurship hubs to nurture start-ups and small businesses,’ he said.

Tinubu added: ‘Nation building is not the responsibility of government alone; it is a sacred duty we all share.’

The Rector, Dr Ibraheem Abdul, disclosed that the institution is on the path to becoming Nigeria’s first specialised University of Technology and Vocational Studies.

He praised President Tinubu for granting the approval, adding that the elevation positions the institution to power the nation’s next phase of innovation-driven development.

Abdul hoped that the transition to a specialised university would unlock new opportunities for research, skills development and national economic growth.

He noted that beginning this year, the convocation ceremony would be held yearly, saying that graduates would now receive their certificates on convocation day as part of new measures to improve administrative efficiency.

Abdul urged the graduates to embrace entrepreneurship and innovation, adding that YABATECH had equipped them with both academic and compulsory vocational skills.

The tournament serves as a crucial qualifier for boxers seeking slots in the prestigious Governor’s Belt Championship later this year.

According to LBHF Director David Mohamed, this weekend’s event is crucial as the last qualifying bouts before the Governor’s Belt finale.

‘Since we resumed LBHF in October, there has been serious interest from boxers across Lagos. We cannot accommodate everyone, so we aim to select the very best for the Governor’s Belt. This weekend’s bouts will surely produce another set of boxers for the end-of-year tournament,’ he said.

The monthly LBHF show series returned in October 2025 after a hiatus. Founded in 2010 by Minister of Finance Wale Edun, LBHF is a non-profit organisation dedicated to developing amateur and grassroots boxing in Nigeria. It is best known for hosting the Governor’s Belt Championship and monthly boxing shows.

Recently, LBHF partnered with Mainstay Bulletproof Limited to support its events, strengthening its platform for young athletes to showcase their talent. Looking ahead, plans are in place for a new format starting in 2026, involving divisional championships across weight categories, followed by regional and national finals.

FCID intercepts 300 rounds of ammunition, busts cybercrime ring in Lagos

Operatives of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex, Alagbon, Lagos, have seized a container carrying 300 rounds of 9mm ammunition concealed in a Nissan Frontier pickup truck.

The consignment also contained two Toyota Sienna vans, one SCION XA vehicle, 24 bags of foreign rice, seven bales of used clothes, cartons of vegetable oil and household items, Assistant Inspector-General (AIG) Margaret Ochalla, said yesterday.

The AIG, who displayed the items at a news conference, said five suspects were arrested in connection with the contraband items, including the driver, Nelson Peretei.

According to a statement by the spokesperson for the command, Assistant Superintendent of Police Aminat Mayegun, investigators traced the shipment to a United States-based sender, Mrs Maria Adeyemi, who allegedly failed to declare the ammunition and other contraband in the bill of lading.

A man, who claimed to be a retired U.S. Marine Colonel, Sunny Nwadiri, also attempted to claim ownership of the ammunition but could not provide verifiable details, the FCID alleged.

‘Preliminary findings showed that the contraband and ammunition were deliberately concealed to evade security checks at the port. ‘Further investigations underway. The FCID is working with the Nigeria Customs Service and the Department of State Services (DSS) to trace the source of the ammunition, its intended destination, and possible links to wider criminal networks,’ the department added.

It said detectives also dismantled an alleged online movie piracy syndicate, arresting a ringleader who unlawfully uploaded movies on TikTok and shared them to viewers on Whatsapp for a fee.

‘Acting on a petition from FilmOne Entertainment Limited, operatives arrested a suspect who unlawfully uploaded the movie ”Owambe Thieves” on TikTok on August 23, 2025. He charged viewers N1,000 for access to the pirated film and distributed full copies via WhatsApp.’

‘Investigations showed he sourced the movie from an illegal website and had been involved in the piracy of several Nollywood titles, including ”Farmers Bride”, ”Thinline” and ”Alakada Bad” and ”Bourjee”.

‘A forensic analysis of two seized iPhones uncovered lists of buyers and pirated movies shared through WhatsApp and Telegram. The suspect’s OPay account showed inflows and outflows totalling about N7.6 million over two months, believed to be proceeds of piracy and cyber fraud. He has been arraigned in court,’ the statement added.

According to Mayegun, AIG Ochalla reaffirmed the department’s commitment to tackling cybercrime, protecting intellectual property, and combating arms trafficking, urging the public to continue providing credible information to support policing efforts.’

Emergency on security: Tinubu okays State Police

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu yesterday gave a nod to the establishment of state police as part of measures to combat rising insurgency and banditry.

‘I call on the National Assembly to begin reviewing our laws to allow states that require state police to establish them,’ he said in a statement he personally issued.

The President, who declared a nationwide security emergency in response to the wave of violent attacks, directed the military and the police to embark on massive recruitment of personnel in readiness for a reinvigorated onslaught against terror.

The President also ordered the activation of forest guards and tighter security measures for all vulnerable areas.

Although state police has been on the front burner of constitutional amendment, some states and other individuals have urged caution, saying that the structure could be abused by heads of sub-national units.

Currently, each of the five Southwest states of Lagos, Oyo, Ondo, Ogun, and Ekiti operates a security outfit, especially Amotekun, in response to the mounting security challenges.

Lagos, which pioneered the idea of a security trust fund, also funds an outfit, neighbourhood watch, to complement the police.

In the Southeast, Ebube Agu was mooted by the governors of Anambra, Imo, Abia, Enugu and Ebonyi.

In the North, many state governments have set up the civilian Joint Task Force for the maintenance of law and order.

Yesterday, governors from the Southwest, Southeast and Southsouth met in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, to brainstorm on strategies for strengthening the apparatus in their domains.

They said in their communique that state police is non-negotiable.

Acknowledging the imperative of a decentralised policing structure, President Tinubu said the Federal Government would support the initiative at the state level.

He said: ‘Our administration will support state governments which have set up security outfits to safeguard their people from the terrorists bent on disrupting our national peace.’

President Tinubu said to strengthen the current federal police, ‘the police will recruit an additional 20,000 officers, bringing the total to 50,000.’

He directed the police to use the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) camps as police training centres in response to the need to meet the requirements for an expanded capacity.

President Tinubu also ordered that officers being withdrawn from Very Important Personalities (VIP) guard duties must undergo crash retraining.

He said the goal of the exercise is to ‘debrief them and deliver more efficient police services when deployed to security-challenged areas of the country.’

The President said the Department of State Services (DSS) would be empowered to activate the forest security architecture.

He said: ‘The DSS also has my authority to immediately deploy all the forest guards already trained to flush out the terrorists and bandits lurking in our forests.’

He added: ‘There will be no more hiding places for agents of evil.’

Describing the prevailing situation as’a national emergency,’ the President said the Federal Government was responding by ‘deploying more boots on the ground, especially in security-challenged areas.’

He appealed to citizens to play their part, saying: ‘The times require all hands on deck. As Nigerians, we should all get involved in securing our nation.’

President Tinubu commended security forces for the recent breakthroughs, including the rescue of abducted schoolgirls in Kebbi and the 38 worshippers seized in Kwara State.

He said: ‘We will continue to sustain the efforts to rescue the remaining students of Catholic School in Niger State and other Nigerians still being held hostage.’

To the security agencies, President Tinubu said: ‘I commend your courage and your sacrifice.

‘I charge you to remain resolute, to restore peace across all theatres of operation, and to uphold the highest standards of discipline and integrity.

‘There must be no compromise, no collusion, and no negligence.’

He cautioned state governments against operating boarding schools in remote, unsecured areas, urging religious institutions to ‘constantly seek police and other security protection when they gather for prayers, especially in vulnerable areas.’

The President reiterated his administration’s stance on resolving farmer-herder clashes, alluding to the establishment of the Ministry of Livestock Development.

He urged herder groups to abandon open grazing and embrace ranching, saying: ‘I call on all herder associations to take advantage of it, end open grazing and surrender illegal weapons. Ranching is now the path forward’.

President Tinubu expressed sympathy to families affected by recent attacks in Kebbi, Borno, Zamfara, Niger, Yobe and Kwara States.

He also paid tribute to fallen soldiers, including Brigadier-General Musa Uba.

The president added: ‘Those who want to test our resolve should never mistake our restraint for weakness.

‘This administration has the courage and determination to keep the country safe and ensure our citizens live in peace.’

Emphasising the importance of surveillance and intelligence gathering, he said: ‘I urge you not to give in to fear and never succumb to despair.

‘Report suspicious activities. Cooperate with security agencies. We are in this fight together, and together we shall win.’

State police non-negotiable, say Southern governors

The Southern Governors’ Forum said state police is non-negotiable if Nigeria desires to effectively tackle banditry.

The meeting was attended by Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), Siminalayi Fubara (Rivers), Alex Otti (Abia), Biodun Oyebanji (Ekiti), Francis Nwifuru (Ebonyi), Peter Mbah (Enugu), Charles Soludo (Anambra) and Lucky Aiyedatiwa (Ondo).

Also there were Deputy Governors Kola Adewusi (Osun), Bayo Lawal (Oyo), Peter Odey (Cross River) and Dennis Idahosa (Edo).

Abiodun, who welcomed the governors, said the abduction of worshippers in Kwara State, school children in Kebbi State and Catholic school pupils in Niger State reinforced the urgency of a decentralised policing system.

He said state police would enable the states to take responsibility for safeguarding their citizens and residents.

Abiodun said a unified Southern position on state police would not only enhance intelligence gathering and early-warning capabilities but also strengthen the region’s ability to secure schools, farmlands, border communities, and critical infrastructure.

He recalled that the South has consistently advocated for a security system that is closer to the people and more responsive to local realities, and better equipped to address the rapidly evolving threats.

Abiodun said the speed at which insecurity spreads also shows that geography is no longer a guarantee of safety.

He stressed that, given the dense populations, major industrial corridors, seaports, airports, and strategic highways, the Southern region faces unique exposure to security risks from non-state actors.

He said the time had come for a shift from a mindset of assumed safety to one defined by structured, preventive, and deliberate security planning.

Abiodun urged Southern Nigeria to adopt a proactive and integrated security framework anchored on intelligence-sharing, border protection, safe-school systems, corridor surveillance, and strong community participation.

He said the gathering would provide a critical opportunity to strengthen the region’s collective resolve, deepen cooperation, and act decisively to protect its people and maintain national cohesion.

He urged the forum to reaffirm its support for state police as each participating state has submitted individual positions on the subject.

Abiodun added: ‘A real-time digital security and intelligence-sharing platform linking all Southern states will ensure seamless communication and rapid threat alerts.

‘A comprehensive safe school programme must be established to protect educational institutions, particularly in vulnerable locations.

‘Joint audits of major transport corridors – road, rail, and maritime – will help identify weak points and inform the deployment of sentinel units and rapid response teams.

‘Community, private security partnerships should be strengthened to bring together local vigilance groups, youth teams, private security firms, and formal security agencies within one coordinated ecosystem.

‘A dedicated regional rapid response fund will also be essential for emergency deployments, rescue operations, forensic support, and inter-state training.

‘At the state level, measures such as mandatory documentation of foreign nationals, dismantling unlawful enclaves, regulating scavenger activities, intensified forest operations, and a crackdown on illegal mining must be pursued with renewed vigour.’

Free nursing conference elevates leadership, patient care skills

The Nursing Leadership Conference, themed ‘Developing the Next Generation of Quality Leaders,’ held on 10th November 2025 and hosted by Dr. Malvis Humphrey of the London Professional Training Centre, offered a transformative experience for over 500 nurses nationwide, attending both physically and virtually at no cost. The event was designed to inspire nurses while equipping them with practical leadership skills to enhance patient care and foster professional growth.

Attendees benefited from the expertise of a distinguished line-up of speakers, including the Director of Nursing Services of Lagos State, the Head of Nursing at the University of Lagos Medical Centre, and other prominent nursing leaders. Presentations provided insights into effective leadership practices, quality care delivery, and the evolving responsibilities of nurses in modern healthcare systems, emphasising how strong leadership can improve patient outcomes and institutional efficiency.

A blend of training sessions and interactive panel discussions allowed participants to engage directly with speakers, ask questions, and tackle real-world challenges. Nurses reported that these sessions helped them reflect on their leadership styles, identify areas for growth, and learn strategies for team and resource management. Peer-to-peer interactions fostered knowledge exchange and expanded professional networks beyond the conference. All participants received Certificates of Participation, with three additional days of follow-up training providing actionable tools for leadership, decision-making, and team management. Many nurses highlighted networking and mentorship opportunities as key benefits, noting that learning directly from seasoned leaders would enhance their immediate practice.

Fed Govt restates support for private-sector investments

The Federal Government has pledged continued support for private-sector investments capable of driving industrialisation, expanding supply chains and creating sustainable employment across the country. In a statement issued by the Ministry of Finance yesterday, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, said the government was committed to working closely with local manufacturers whose investments are strengthening Nigeria’s productive base.

He gave the assurance during a meeting in Abuja with executives of Folay West African Limited, where the company presented its expansion plans aimed at boosting domestic manufacturing and deepening the agricultural value chain. Folay Industries, a Nigerian-owned fast-moving consumer goods manufacturer operating from the Lekki Free Zone, has invested more than N11 billion in local production. According to the ministry, the company sources grains domestically and has continued to create employment opportunities through backward integration.

It is also one of several indigenous manufacturers replacing imports with competitive products made in Nigeria.

Mr. Edun, who welcomed the company’s progress, said, ‘Initiatives such as those undertaken by Folay Industries reflect the movement toward value-added production, which is vital for economic diversification and long-term growth.’ He added that the administration would continue to encourage private-sector initiatives that strengthen Nigeria’s industrial capacity and contribute to national development.

The meeting, the ministry noted, demonstrated the government’s steady support for the manufacturing sector at a time when the country is navigating the demands of diversification. ‘Partnerships with the private sector will be central to driving growth, creating jobs and building a resilient economy capable of securing a brighter future for Nigeria,’ the statement added.

In a separate development, Mr. Edun on Tuesday chaired the 64th Regular Meeting of the Nigeria Customs Service Board, where key leadership appointments and promotions were approved to enhance operational effectiveness and support the ongoing transformation of the Service.

The Board confirmed five Deputy Comptroller-Generals and eight Assistant Comptroller-Generals in line with the Nigeria Customs Service Act, 2023 and the Federal Character principle. It also approved Special Promotions for ten officers who were recognised for what the ministry described as ‘exceptional professionalism and significant contributions to national revenue and security.’

The ministry explained that the reforms form part of a continuing effort to modernise Customs operations, improve leadership succession and strengthen trade facilitation, transparency and border management.

As Nigeria expands non-oil revenue sources and promotes private-sector-driven growth, a more agile and technology-driven Customs Service is expected to play a critical role in reducing bottlenecks, improving clearance timelines and enhancing competitiveness under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

NNPC/Heirs Energies boost domestic gas supply with 135 MMscf/d

Gas supply received a boost in the country as the NNPC/Heirs Energies OML 17 Joint Venture (JV) announced an additional 135 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscf/d), to the basket, thus further strengthening the nation’s energy security.

The feat, achieved after a rigless recompletion of a key non-associated gas well in OML 17, is said to be a pioneering intervention of such regarded as the first of its kind in the country, doubled the JV’s gas output.

Prior to this development, the Well from which the new increase accrued, had previously been shut in due to excessive water production. Rather than drilling a new well or undertaking a conventional workover, Heirs Energies engineered a rigless through-tubing recompletion into an untapped reservoir interval. Completed safely, in record time, and at just 15 per cent of the cost of drilling a new Well, the operation sets a new standard for rigless solutions in Nigeria’s upstream sector.

A statement signed by the Head Corporate Communications, Heirs Energies, Chidimma Ugbojiaku, a copy of which was made available to The Nation, explained that this significant production increase has transformed power generation across the eastern network.

For instance, it explained that Transcorp PLC – TransAfam Power, has quadrupled its output, rising from an average of 50 megawatts to more than 180 megawatts, with peaks of 200 megawatts. It further disclosed that other power plants also supplied by the network, including First Independent Power Limited (FIPL) and Geometric Power, have also recorded more stable operations and higher generation.

‘In total, the power plants now receiving gas from the Joint Venture have seen combined output surge from around 100 megawatts to more than 350 megawatts. This increased power generation provides enough energy to power hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses – reducing blackouts, supporting hospitals, and schools, and keeping factories, small enterprises, and critical infrastructure running,’ the statement read in part.

Commending the feat, the Special Adviser to the President on Energy, Mrs Olu Verheijen, hailed the feat. ‘I congratulate the entire Heirs Energies team on this remarkable achievement, which is a testament to the strength of Nigerian engineering expertise and the value of persistent technical innovation. Please be assured of my continued support as you expand your operation across the energy sector, unlocking additional oil and gas resources to power homes, industries and commercial activities nationwide,’ Mrs. Verheijen, remarked in a message to Heirs Energies CEO, Osa Igiehon,

According to Igiehon, ‘the milestone is another testament to Heirs Energies’ leading capabilities in managing brownfields. The ingenuity, thoroughness, and resilience of our 100 per cent Nigerian workforce made this possible. We remain committed to supporting Nigeria’s gas-to-power agenda through innovation-led, responsible, and performance-driven upstream operations.’

Executive Vice President, Upstream, NNPC Ltd, Udy Ntia, said: ‘This innovative intervention demonstrates NNPC’s strong commitment to unlocking the nation’s gas resources in support of national development. The performance of the NNPC/Heirs Energies OML 17 Joint Venture shows the power of partnership, disciplined execution, and innovation in driving substantial value for Nigeria.’

In similar vein, the Chief Upstream Investment Officer, NUIMS, Seyi Omotowa, an engineer, added: ‘This project reflects NUIMS’ strategic focus on safe, efficient, and value-driven upstream operations. It is a model for the type of innovative solutions required to optimise Nigeria’s hydrocarbon assets.’

The NNPC/Heirs Energies OML 17 Joint Venture continues to advance gas-focused, innovation-driven developments, aiming to expand domestic gas supply, strengthen electricity generation, build local capacity, and support broader economic and industrial growth. This latest success reinforces the JV’s commitment to delivering energy that powers homes, industries, and national prosperity

Heirs Energies Limited is Africa’s leading indigenous-owned integrated energy company, committed to meeting Africa’s unique energy needs while aligning with global sustainability goals. Having a strong focus on innovation, environmental responsibility, and community development, Heirs Energies leads in the evolving energy landscape and contributes to a more prosperous Africa.

Energy access: Zamfara holds stakeholders meeting to review electricity policy bill

Ex-DSS DG, ex-NIA boss, envoy tipped as ambassadors

Three top public officials have been nominated as Ambassadors by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

They are the first set of individuals to be tipped to lead Nigeria’s Missions abroad by the Tinubu’s administration.

Those recommended for screening and clearance by the Senate are: Ambassadors Ayodele Oke and Amin Mohammed Dalhatu. Also on the list is former Head of the Secret Service, Lateef Kayode Are.

The President nominated the three seasoned security and diplomatic figures to represent Nigeria in the United States (U.S.); the United Kingdom (UK) and France, a post by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said yesterday.

Ambassador Dalhatu, one of the nominees, previously served as Nigeria’s Ambassador to South Korea duringr the administration the late President Muhammadu Buhari.

Dalhatu, who was appointed in 2016, completed a tenure marked by strengthened bilateral cooperation between Abuja and Seoul.

Ambassador Oke, a graduate of Emory University in Atlanta, served as Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA).

He earlier represented Nigeria at the Secretariat of the Commonwealth of Nations in London and is widely regarded for his extensive diplomatic and intelligence background.

A technical committee rated him the best among those considered for ministerial posting during the Buhari Administration. The committee considered his impeccable pedigree on international relations.

But before the name was announced, a former Oyo State governor rushed to the Presidency and engineered the removal of his name and replaced it with his own stooge.

Col. Are will be bringing decades of national security experience to the diplomatic corps, having served as Director-General of the State Security Service (SSS) from 1999 to 2007 and later as National Security Adviser (NSA) in 2010.

The former officer in the Directorate of Military Intelligence (DMI), graduated with First Class Honours in Psychology from the University of Ibadan in 1980.

The three nominees are expected to play strategic roles in strengthening Nigeria’s diplomatic presence in key global capitals once their postings have been finalised after Senate confirmation.
