Trump reiterates stopping Pakistan-India war, praises CDF Munir

President Donald Trump, in an event at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida on Monday, reiterated his claims that he helped prevent a war between Pakistan and India in May 2025, Azernews reports, citing Tribune.

He praised Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, calling him a “highly respected general”.

“We stopped a potential nuclear war between Pakistan and India,” Trump said in response to a question, alongside Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth and Secretary of the Navy John Phelan.

The US president mentioned that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif credited him with saving lives through his intervention and mediation.

“You know, eight planes were shot down. That war was starting to rage, and he actually said the other day that President Trump saved 10 million lives, maybe more,” he said.

In the same event, Trump announced plans for a new class of US Navy warships that will be named after himself, a rare honour for a sitting president. The first vessels in the so-called Trump-class will be built under a broader initiative he calls the ‘Golden Fleet.’

Two ships will be built initially, with plans to expand construction further. Officials displayed renderings showing vessels that could be larger and more heavily armed than existing destroyers, equipped with missiles, guns and advanced systems including lasers and hypersonic weapons.

The president also emphasised the advanced nature of US submarines, declaring them the most sophisticated in the world. He confidently stated that the US is at least 15 years ahead of any other nation in submarine technology, a significant advantage that bolsters the country’s military posture.

As part of the US Navy’s modernisation efforts, he revealed that 15 cutting-edge submarines are currently under production, reinforcing the Navy’s dominance globally.

Fascinating circus show delights audience with holiday magic [PHOTOS]

In the run-up to the New Year festivities, the Baku State Circus has unveiled a special program titled “New Year Caravan”, Azernews reports.

The circus masters representing various countries performed both traditional and contemporary acts. The shows were presented around an engaging storyline in which audiences and performers unite against the villain Baltazar, who attempts to prevent the celebration of the New Year.

The “New Year Caravan” unfolded in a seamless sequence-from juggling artistry and feats of strength to acrobats’ balancing acts and the thrilling flights of aerial gymnasts. The sudden appearance of dogs of “different weight categories” in the arena drew particular admiration from the audience.

The very name of the program created anticipation of camels’ participation. Indeed, the sight of these phlegmatic yet well-fed and well-groomed “ships of the desert” under the dazzling circus lights sparked great excitement among spectators. The performances staged in this unusual setting were widely discussed both during the intermission and after the show.

The vibrant circus atmosphere maintained its emotional intensity throughout the performance, culminating in a spectacular moto-show. This act left every visitor breathless, immersing them fully in the festive spirit of the season.

The show seemed to dissolve the boundary between adults and the many children in attendance. This was especially evident in the intermissions, when a comical clown duo appeared on stage with humorous sketches that provoked laughter. Their invitation to join in their “mischief” was met with enthusiastic participation, earning loud applause from the hall.

The applause and rhythmic foot-stomping became an additional force that “freed” the New Year characters, who then invited the audience to play a snowball game. The appearance of Father Frost in the arena and the ceremonial raising of the New Year tree brought immense joy to the children, many of whom eagerly tried to approach the stage.

The Baku State Circus will continue to delight city residents and visitors with the magical holiday spirit of the ‘New Year Caravan’ journey until January 11, 2026.

The circus tent is located in the Sabail district, near the Water Sports Palace, at 15 Academician A. Yagubov Street. Tickets are available at iTicket.Az.

India commits $450m for Sri Lanka post-cyclone recovery

India pledged on Tuesday a $450-million package for Sri Lanka’s recovery and reconstruction after Cyclone Ditwah, the largest assistance commitment announced so far, Azernews reports, citing Arab News.

When it made landfall in late November, Cyclone Ditwah turned into Sri Lanka’s most severe weather disaster in recent history, with 640 deaths, millions affected, billions of dollars in direct damage, and far-reaching impacts on agriculture, infrastructure and vulnerable communities.

The World Bank estimates direct losses at about $4.1 billion, roughly 4 percent of the country’s gross domestic product, as floodwaters and landslides have devastated homes, agricultural land, and infrastructure.

India’s aid package was announced by Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar who is on a two-day visit to Colombo as Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s special envoy on cyclone response.

He met Sri Lanka’s President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya on Tuesday.

In a media briefing, Jaishankar said he had handed a letter from Modi to Dissanayake, committing to a ‘reconstruction package of $450 million’ and ‘how expeditiously this commitment can be delivered.’

The cyclone hit Sri Lanka as the country was still recovering from its worst-ever economic crisis in 2022, when it exhausted foreign exchange reserves and struggled to pay for essential imports, including food, fuel, and medicine.

Nearly 2 million people have been displaced, including tens of thousands remaining in evacuation shelters. Relief and recovery efforts continue, often disrupted by damage to roads, railways, bridges, and utilities.

India’s aid package is the largest assistance commitment announced to date for Sri Lanka’s cyclone recovery.

The International Monetary Fund approved about $206 million through its Rapid Finance Instrument as part of immediate support, while the World Bank has provided $120 million.

The UK pledged about $890,000 for emergency assistance, while most other national contributions were in-kind support.

India’s aid package includes $350 million in concessional lines of credit and $100 million in grants, focusing on restoring connectivity, rebuilding damaged homes, and mitigating the cyclone’s impact on agriculture.

‘Given the scale of damage, restoring connectivity was clearly an immediate priority,’ Jaishankar said.

‘We are conscious that work towards mitigating the impact of Cyclone Ditwah on the people of Sri Lanka must be done in the quickest time possible. We are discussing an effective coordination mechanism for earliest possible delivery.’

Baku extends COP29 legacy with 2026 World Urban Forum hosting

Azerbaijan’s growing role as a trusted host of major international forums is not accidental. It reflects a combination of political stability, institutional capacity, and an increasingly visible development model that resonates with global agendas. Just as Azerbaijan successfully hosted COP29 in December 2024, facilitating meaningful dialogue and landmark climate decisions, it is well-positioned to ensure the success of the 13th World Urban Forum (WUF13), which the country will host on May 17-22, 2026, under the theme ‘Housing for All: Safe and Sustainable Cities and Settlements.’ The decision to hold the Forum in Azerbaijan, including the first-ever Summit of Heads of State and Government within WUF, signals growing international confidence in the country’s leadership on sustainable development and urban transformation. Ahead of WUF13, President Ilham Aliyev has signed a decree declaring 2026 the ‘Year of Urban Planning and Architecture’ in Azerbaijan, highlighting the country’s commitment to sustainable urban development. The order aims to preserve Azerbaijan’s historic architectural and urban planning traditions while promoting modern approaches to address emerging challenges in the sector.

Urbanization in Azerbaijan has developed under a combination of economic, political, and social factors. While in many countries urban growth has been driven largely by industrialization, Azerbaijan’s urban landscape has also been influenced by periods of conflict, forced displacement, and subsequent post-war recovery, alongside broader modernization processes. This background provides relevant context as the country prepares to host WUF13, where issues such as inclusive urban development, housing policy, resilience, and sustainability will be discussed. In Azerbaijan’s case, these topics relate to ongoing policy implementation, particularly in the formerly conflict-affected territories.

The most compelling example of this approach can be seen in Garabagh and Eastern Zangezur, where Azerbaijan has launched one of the world’s most ambitious post-conflict reconstruction and urban development programs following the 2020 Patriotic War. The strategy goes beyond physical rebuilding and reflects a long-term vision of sustainable settlement. Large-scale mine clearance remains the critical first step, followed by the rapid construction of transport networks, utilities, industrial zones, and social infrastructure. At the same time, economic revitalization and job creation are being prioritized to ensure that returning residents can rebuild their lives with dignity and stability. New transport corridors, including the strategically important Zangezur Corridor, are integrating these regions into national and regional economic systems, reinforcing their long-term viability.

What distinguishes Azerbaijan’s reconstruction model is its strong environmental dimension. Garabagh and Eastern Zangezur have been declared a ‘Green Energy Zone,’ turning post-conflict recovery into an opportunity for climate-conscious urban planning. New cities, towns, and villages are being built using energy-efficient designs, renewable energy sources, environmentally friendly materials, and climate-resilient infrastructure. This approach transforms reconstruction into the creation of a new generation of sustainable settlements and aligns directly with the UN’s New Urban Agenda and the core priorities of WUF13.

Azerbaijan’s readiness to host WUF13 is further reinforced by the institutional and diplomatic experience gained during COP29, an event that remains notable for both the clarity of its outcomes and the strong foundations it laid for future global processes. One of COP29’s most significant achievements was the adoption of the Baku Finance Goal, which established a historic commitment to mobilize $1.3 trillion annually for developing countries and set clear expectations for developed nations to contribute at least $300 billion per year by 2035. The conference also delivered a long-awaited breakthrough by fully operationalizing Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, unlocking transparent and regulated international carbon markets, while the Loss and Damage Fund was fully institutionalized with contributions exceeding $730 million, offering tangible support to climate-vulnerable states, particularly Small Island Developing States.

Beyond finance and mitigation, COP29 ensured that adaptation would remain a central pillar of global climate policy through the adoption of the Baku Adaptation Roadmap and the Global Adaptation Target, reinforcing Azerbaijan’s role as a facilitator of balanced and inclusive outcomes. These achievements demonstrated the country’s ability not only to host complex international forums but also to guide negotiations toward concrete and forward-looking results.

In this context, WUF13 represents a natural continuation of Azerbaijan’s expanding role in global governance. The Forum will provide a platform to showcase the country’s urban achievements while contributing substantively to international discussions on housing, sustainable cities, and post-conflict reconstruction. As COP29 showed, Azerbaijan is capable of translating dialogue into action. With WUF13, the country aims to do the same in the urban development sphere – presenting itself not merely as a venue for global debate, but as a practical model for building resilient, inclusive, and sustainable cities in a rapidly changing world.

Zangazur, Middle Corridor to boost Trkiye’s reach to Central Asia, Bolat says [PHOTOS]

Turkiye’s Minister of Trade, Ömer Bolat, said that Azerbaijan occupies a strategically important position in providing Trkiye’s access not only to the Commonwealth of Independent States but also, in particular, to the countries of the Turkic world, Azernews reports.

Speaking at the 2nd Azerbaijan-Trkiye Investment Forum, Bolat noted that energy corridors and the Zangazur Corridor are expected to be completed in the near future, and together with Caspian Sea transit routes, will enable Trkiye to reach Central Asia and the Far East more rapidly and efficiently.

Bolat noted that the Middle Corridor, passing through Azerbaijan and Trkiye, will have an accelerating effect on global trade and will trigger significant growth in trade, production, and investment across countries and cities in the region.

Stressing that investment is one of the key drivers of trade, Bolat said the main focus of the forum is to further strengthen mutual investments. He added that Turkish and Azerbaijani political leaders, public officials, and business representatives are discussing concrete projects within the framework of the forum.

According to Bolat, the forum features panel discussions in finance, energy, transportation, agriculture, and education, bringing together deputy ministers and private sector leaders. He also highlighted that the event includes project presentations and B2B meetings, making the forum a highly productive platform for cooperation.

Bolat noted that Turkish and Azerbaijani investors had already engaged actively prior to the forum. He said that total mutual investments between Trkiye and Azerbaijan have reached $39-40 billion, with around 3,000 Azerbaijani companies operating in Trkiye and around 7,000 Turkish companies active in Azerbaijan.

Pointing to the strong alignment between public authorities and market regulations in both countries, Bolat said that increased investment naturally leads to expanded trade – an outcome consistently observed worldwide.

He welcomed Azerbaijan’s efforts to diversify its economy beyond the energy sector, particularly in agriculture, industry, and other non-oil sectors, describing these initiatives as steps in the right direction.

Bolat also underlined that Trkiye serves as a key transit hub for Azerbaijan’s rich natural resources to reach global markets. He added that under the leadership of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Trkiye’s national income has grown 7.5 times over the past 23 years, exceeding $1.5 trillion, creating significant opportunities for Azerbaijani entrepreneurs to access global markets.

President Ilham Aliyev visits Karkijahan settlement in Khankendi [PHOTOS]

President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev visited the Karkijahan settlement of the city of Khankendi on December 23, Azernews reports.

Elchin Yusubov, the President’s Special Representative in the city of Khankendi and the Aghdara and Khojaly districts, updated the head of state on the ongoing development work in the settlement.

Renovation works began in May this year. The settlement currently comprises 33 apartment buildings and 1,037 individual houses, of which 247 are uninhabitable and 790 are partially habitable. Plans include the repair of 40 houses by the end of this year and 280 houses in 2026. To date, renovation works have been completed in 30 houses. In the first phase, 30 families, comprising 115 residents, have returned to their ancestral homes after temporary displacement in other cities and districts.

A number of social infrastructure projects have also been implemented. In the individual housing area, water, electricity, and gas lines were inspected; 2 kilometers of underground optical cable and 510 meters of power lines were installed; street lighting was ensured; light poles were set up; and internal roads were asphalted. Additionally, major repairs were carried out at the 60-seat No. 1 nursery-kindergarten and the secondary school designed for 624 students.

President Ilham Aliyev previously visited the settlement on October 15, 2023.

Located at an altitude of 1,130 meters above sea level and covering a total area of 234 hectares, Karkijahan is a settlement within the administrative boundaries of the city of Khankendi. In the 1960s, the nationalist Armenian leadership of the former autonomous oblast removed the settlement’s name from the official list of populated areas and incorporated it into the city of Khankendi. Occupied in late 1991, Karkijahan was burned by Armenian forces in 1992. Before the occupation, 355 families, totaling 1,796 Azerbaijanis, lived in the settlement. Currently, 674 families, comprising 2,531 residents, are registered. The settlement was liberated from occupation in 2023 as a result of the anti-terror operation carried out by the Azerbaijani Army.

The head of state also visited the home of Yadigar Asadova, a resident of Karkijahan.
