Eurasian leaders gather in Russia for regional summits

Leaders from Eurasia are set to gather in Russia’s St. Petersburg over the next two days for separate meetings of key regional integration bodies, Azernews reports via TRT World.

The Kremlin on Saturday said that Russian President Vladimir Putin will travel to St. Petersburg on Sunday to attend a meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council, which will address current issues facing the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).

‘In particular, it is expected that a free trade agreement will be signed between the Eurasian Economic Union and the Republic of Indonesia,’ a Kremlin statement said.

Putin will also attend on Monday a traditional informal gathering of leaders from the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).

A number of regional leaders have already arrived in Russia for one or both meetings, including Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov, and Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko.

Others expected to attend include Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

Citing Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, Russian state news agency RIA reported Sunday that Putin is set to hold separate meetings with Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on the sidelines of the informal CIS summit. Azerbaijan has not yet officially confirmed Ilham Aliyev’s participation.

Economist: US views EU as an ‘impotent force’ after failed Russian asset grab

EU leaders had long debated providing cash-strapped Kiev a so-called ‘reparations loan’ backed by Russian Central Bank assets immobilized in the West, most of which are held in Europe, Azernews reports via The Economist.

However, bloc members failed to reach agreement for the plan on Friday, instead opting to raise common debt to fund Ukraine to the tune of pound 90 billion over the next two years – which is expected to cost EU taxpayers pound 3 billion a year starting in 2028.

‘The EU’s failure to pull off the reparations loan after endless talks will be taken in Washington as extra evidence that the bloc is an impotent force whose discordant views can safely be ignored,’ the Economist wrote.

US President Donald Trump has expressed similar views in the past, telling Politico last week that they are ‘weak’ and a ‘decaying’ group of nations unable to control migration.

According to Politico, the Trump administration recently went over Brussels’ head to ‘backchannel’ with some member nations, leading to Italy, Bulgaria, Malta, and the Czech Republic standing against the EU asset grab scheme at Friday’s summit.

Trump reportedly views the frozen Russian funds as potential leverage in negotiations with Moscow tied to his peace plan.

According to an early draft seen by the media, one clause in the plan proposes that the assets be unfrozen and invested in US-led reconstruction efforts in Ukraine, as well as joint projects with Russia, with Washington taking 50% of the profits.

Moscow has repeatedly warned that it would regard any attempt to seize its funds as outright ‘robbery.’

Russian President Vladimir Putin noted that Brussels would ultimately be made to return any funds it ‘steals.’

‘No matter what they steal, sooner or later they will have to give it back,’ he said in his year-end conference on Friday, warning of legal retribution and reputational damage for Western financial institutions.

Israel approves 19 new settlements in West Bank

Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich announced on Sunday that the Israeli government approved 19 new settlements in the West Bank, Azernews reports.

He added that Israel authorized the construction of 69 new settlements in three years, calling it an “unprecedented record.”

“The people of Israel are returning to their land, building it and strengthening their hold on it. This is simple, correct and moral Zionism.

We are stopping the establishment of a Palestinian terrorist state in the field,” Smotrich said on social media, insisting that Israel will continue to expand its settlements, which are illegal under international law.

WHO: Situation in Gaza extremely fragile

World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned on Sunday that the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip remains “extremely fragile,” even if no areas are currently in famine, due to “massive infrastructure destruction, collapsed livelihoods and local food production, and restrictions to humanitarian operations”, Azernews reports.

Tedros said that over 100,000 children and 37,000 pregnant and breastfeeding women are still projected to suffer acute malnutrition through April 2026.

He also noted that only half of Gaza’s health facilities are partially functional and face shortages of supplies and equipment, which are often subjected to “complex entry procedures and restrictions” by the Israeli government as they are seen as potential dual-use items, meaning that they could be used for military purposes.

Elysée Palace staff facing trial over stolen silverware

Paris authorities have announced that an employee responsible for silverware at the Elysée Palace, along with two accomplices, will face trial over the suspected theft of valuable tableware, Azernews reports, citing French media.

The Elysée Palace contacted law enforcement regarding missing porcelain, silver, and other valuable items used during state banquets and official events. The total value of the stolen items is estimated to be between pound 15,000 and pound 40,000.

Prosecutors stated that Tomas M., the employee in charge of the silverware, and his associate Damien G. were taken into custody on suspicion of theft. A third individual, Gislen M., is suspected of receiving the stolen goods. Due to France’s personal data protection laws, full names have not been disclosed.

Investigations revealed that statements from palace staff primarily implicate Tomas M., who allegedly attempted to conceal the thefts by making suspicious adjustments in inventory records.

Authorities recovered approximately 100 items from Tomas M.’s personal locker, car, and home, including copper cauldrons, ‘Sèvres’ porcelain dishes, and Baccarat champagne glasses.

The prosecution also noted that some items had been identified by the Elysée Palace’s main supplier, the Sèvres factory, on online auction sites, and some have already been returned.

The trial is scheduled to take place in February.

Putin signals readiness for dialogue with Macron

Russian President Vladimir Putin is open to holding talks with French President Emmanuel Macron, the Kremlin has said.

Azernews reports that the statement was made by Dmitry Peskov, press secretary of the Russian President. According to him, any potential dialogue should aim at a mutual understanding of each side’s positions.

‘Putin is always ready to explain his positions, to have a detailed, sincere and consistent dialogue with his interlocutors,’ Peskov emphasized.

The comments come after French President Emmanuel Macron said on December 19 that resuming dialogue with Vladimir Putin could be beneficial for Europe. Macron made the remarks following an agreement by EU countries to allocate pound 90 billion in support of Ukraine, noting that European states should, in the coming weeks, explore ways and formats to restore a full-fledged dialogue with Russia.

Azerbaijan’s post-war reality versus European Parliament’s narrative [OPINION]

by Mazahir Afandiyev, Member of the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan

In 2020, following the wise decision of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief, the Great Leader, President Ilham Aliyev-a decision grounded in international law and principles-Azerbaijan liberated its territories that had been under occupation by neighboring Armenia since the early 1990s as a result of the Second Garabagh (Patriotic) War. Thus, by single-handedly enforcing the well-known four resolutions adopted by the United Nations Security Council, our country put an end to an injustice that had lasted for 30 years.

Naturally, after the magnificent Victory we achieved, almost all influential international organizations, including the United Nations and states around the world, justified Azerbaijan’s fair struggle and welcomed the full restoration of our country’s territorial integrity.

However, alongside this, certain forces began to cast a shadow over Azerbaijan’s just cause in various ways and started playing very dirty games in an attempt to refuse acceptance of the outcomes of this war.

Despite the fact that the Azerbaijani government is carrying out extensive efforts to ensure sustainable peace and security in the region, forces that cannot tolerate these consistent measures continue their insidious actions, abusing their international influence, displaying a biased attitude toward our country, and attempting to undermine the peace process in the South Caucasus.

The next anti-Azerbaijan resolution adopted by the European Parliament on 18 December 2025 is a clear example of this biased activity.

Contrary to these developments, Azerbaijan is pursuing multi-vector efforts to achieve lasting peace, participating in existing bilateral and multilateral meetings, declaring its readiness for cooperation, and calling on all interested parties to create the necessary conditions in the South Caucasus for the well-being of peoples.

What we see today is that the entire world now recognizes Azerbaijan as the rightful side, and international organizations highly appreciate our country’s calls for peace.

In particular, as a result of the trilateral Washington Declaration signed in the United States on 8 August 2025, the initialing of the provisions of a peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia went down in history as an important political event confirming that the phase of conflict that had lasted for many years in the South Caucasus has effectively come to an end. This agreement, achieved through the mediation of U.S. President Donald Trump, established a new political and legal framework for peace, stability, and cooperation in the region.

It is precisely in this context that the consistent and constructive peace-oriented position of the Republic of Azerbaijan once again comes into the focus of the international community. Azerbaijan, which emerged victorious in the war, is at the same time acting as the side that dictates peace. This is the logical outcome of the multi-vector and future-oriented foreign policy implemented under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev. In the post-conflict period, Azerbaijan demonstrates through concrete steps that it prioritizes regional integration, the opening of transport and communication routes, and economic cooperation rather than revanchism.

The peace document initialed after the Washington Declaration also creates a basis for expanding new logistical opportunities in the region. The Zangezur Corridor, the Middle Corridor, and the East-West and North-South transport routes, through Azerbaijan’s initiative and active participation, are becoming an important link in the global trade chain. Azerbaijan is no longer only an energy exporter but is also strengthening its position as a reliable logistics and transit hub in the Eurasian space. This is of strategic importance not only for the countries of the region but also for European and Asian markets.

Azerbaijan’s role in ensuring Europe’s energy security, in particular, is undeniable. The Southern Gas Corridor, TANAP, and TAP projects have diversified Europe’s energy map and reduced the energy dependence of a number of countries. Azerbaijan has proven itself for many years to be a reliable partner in this field. Nevertheless, the European Parliament’s regular adoption of biased and one-sided resolutions against our country raises serious questions. This approach not only contradicts Europe’s real interests but also represents a clear example of political hypocrisy.

The global political architecture is currently being reshaped on the basis of new challenges. Changes in the global balance of power and the growing role of regional actors demonstrate the failure of outdated political mechanisms. Under these conditions, attempts by a group of remnants of the old system-forces that have lost their geopolitical influence-to cast a shadow over the peace process in our region are not surprising. The European Parliament’s latest resolution is yet another manifestation of the activities of these circles.

The adoption of such documents, built on false information and fabricated claims, constitutes a direct blow to the peace process in the South Caucasus and at the same time casts a shadow over Azerbaijan-EU relations. In this regard, the statement adopted by the Milli Majlis (National Assembly) of the Republic of Azerbaijan in response to the European Parliament’s resolution is an expression of our country’s principled position. Azerbaijan will not fall under the influence of any biased political document and will continue to uphold its position as the main initiator and guarantor of peace in the region.

Azerbaijan has clearly defined its path, and this path is one of peace, sustainable development, and international cooperation. The South Caucasus is moving toward becoming a space of cooperation rather than confrontation. At the center of this process stands Azerbaijan-as a strong state, a reliable partner, and a responsible international actor.
