Japanese zoos face first panda absence in decades

At the end of January, two twin pandas are scheduled to be returned to China from Tokyo Zoo, Japan, Azernews reports. This will mark the first time in 53 years that there will be no pandas in Japanese zoos.

The agency notes that the first pandas were sent to Japan from China in 1972 as a symbol of the normalization of diplomatic relations between the two countries. However, amid rising tensions between Beijing and Tokyo, the prospects for new pandas appearing in Japanese zoos remain uncertain.

It is important to remember that all giant pandas are considered the property of China: even those born abroad are only loaned to foreign zoos under strict lease agreements. This policy is part of the so-called ‘panda diplomacy,’ a unique tool Beijing has used for decades to strengthen its international influence. Some experts suggest that these adorable ambassadors are not only symbols of friendship but also subtle instruments of geopolitical strategy.

Azerbaijan approves National Standardization Program for 2026-2028

The Azerbaijan Institute of Standardization (AZSTAND), operating under the State Agency for Antimonopoly and Consumer Market Control under the President of Azerbaijan, has approved the National Standardization Program for 2026-2028, Azernews reports, citing the Agency.

The program was developed in line with the Law on Standardization and the rules for the formation and amendment of the national standardization program approved by a Cabinet of Ministers decision dated May 27, 2024. Its preparation took into account opinions and proposals from more than 50 public and private sector institutions.

When drafting the program, AZSTAND considered reference standards to be adopted for ensuring compliance with key requirements of technical regulations, relevant legal and regulatory acts, work plans of technical committees on standardization, and regulatory documents of international and regional standardization organizations. The program also reflects the results of modern scientific and technological research and aligns with the country’s overall socio-economic development strategy.

The document envisages the development of new standards aimed at promoting the use of modern technologies and solutions across all sectors of the economy, while ensuring the production of safe, high-quality, and competitive goods and services. China traffic police get AI glasses to check vehicles

The Traffic Management Department of Changsha, China, has equipped its road personnel with AI-powered smart glasses. These cutting-edge devices can provide information about a vehicle in just 1-2 seconds, Azernews reports.

The glasses feature a 12-megapixel wide-angle camera with an advanced image stabilization algorithm. According to the developers, they achieve over 99% accuracy in license plate recognition and respond in less than one second. They display real-time information about vehicle registration, annual inspections, and violations through a pop-up interface. Additional capabilities include facial recognition, real-time translation in more than 10 languages, and automatic recording of traffic violations. Remarkably, the glasses can operate independently for up to eight hours on a single charge.

The department reports that the average time to check a vehicle has dropped from 30 seconds to just 1-2 seconds, boosting traffic efficiency by 80% and significantly reducing the likelihood of conflicts on the road. Some experts even suggest that these smart glasses could be the first step toward fully AI-assisted traffic policing, where human officers are guided in real time by intelligent devices.

Australia wants to tighten gun laws

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has proposed tightening national gun laws following a deadly terrorist attack on a Sydney beach, Azernews reports.

Speaking to reporters, Albanese said the government is prepared to take necessary measures, including stricter regulations on firearms. He also indicated plans to introduce limits on the number of weapons a license holder can purchase.

New South Wales Premier Chris Minns added that the state’s gun laws would also be revised. He emphasized his opposition to issuing indefinite firearm licenses, calling for more rigorous controls.

Australia’s gun laws were last overhauled in 1996 after the Port Arthur mass shooting, which claimed 35 lives.

The tragic attack occurred yesterday during the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah, when a gunman opened fire on a Sydney beach. According to the latest reports, 16 people have died and 42 others were hospitalized. Authorities have launched a full investigation into the incident, raising concerns about national security and the potential need for more stringent anti-terror measures.

Experts note that this latest attack may reignite the long-standing debate in Australia over gun control, balancing public safety with individual rights-a discussion that has shaped national policy for nearly three decades.

AzInTelecom establishes Supercomputer Center to accelerate AI development in Azerbaijan

AzInTelecom LLC, a company within AZCON Holding, has established a Supercomputer Center in Azerbaijan, marking a major step in strengthening the country’s artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure, Azernews reports.

The center was created in line with the Artificial Intelligence Strategy of the Republic of Azerbaijan, approved by a presidential decree dated March 19, 2025. Its main objectives are to support the implementation of AI projects, accelerate the development of artificial intelligence in the country, and drive overall digital transformation.

Designed primarily for innovation-driven entities, businesses, and government projects, the Supercomputer Center is equipped with high-performance computing (HPC) systems powered by NVIDIA H200 GPU chips. These systems offer computing capabilities far exceeding those of conventional computers and are capable of processing large volumes of data at very high speed.

The establishment of the Supercomputer Center is of strategic importance for the development of Azerbaijan’s AI ecosystem. Built on advanced graphics processing unit (GPU) technology, the center provides the technological infrastructure needed for the rapid training and deployment of AI models that rely on large-scale data processing. This will enable local AI projects to be developed domestically without dependence on foreign resources, ensure a more secure environment for processing state-owned data, and enhance Azerbaijan’s competitiveness in the regional AI landscape.

Efforts are currently underway to further expand the center’s capacity through the acquisition of additional GPU chips.

AzInTelecom is Azerbaijan’s largest cloud services provider and the operator of the Government Cloud project. The company currently operates two TIER III-certified data centers in Baku and Yevlakh, while construction of two additional data centers in the Absheron and Hajigabul districts is ongoing.
